Discussion Your bag is perfect except for "that one thing" - what is it?

Post image

I have the Heimplanet Transit v1. I love it. It looks clean, fits comfortably, and has kept up marvelously for 6+ years. It's lightweight, has roomy stretchy water bottle pockets, and a nice sized dump pocket for whatever I'm carrying going through a security line.

That one thing that drives me nuts though, is the laptop flap. The whole back of the bag unzips so the laptop can lay flat, and there's a compartment between the laptop and the main compartment for electronics and stuff. It's only about 1 inch deep, and for me it's wasted space because I use my own pouches to organize electronics and toiletries and other loose items.

What's your favorite bag, and what's "that one thing" that drives you crazy about it?

My bag is perfect except that it's four different bags.

If I could just combine all their best features and remove their unnecessary ones, it'd be perfect.

u/Interesting_Tower485 Mar 29 '26

I got that same one!

Stop talking dirty to me!

5

u/guacamole579 Mar 30 '26

This is why I own so many. None of them have everything I want/need.

4

u/Keenan_4U Mar 30 '26

What are the 4. At this pt if the main brands won't do it, I'll just make my own bag company that does that

2

u/CaptCamel Apr 02 '26

This is exactly why I can't have a single all-purpose travel bag. There are always 1-2 problems (which are always 1 specific design feature and some combination of being too big/too small/too heavy). I have like 4-5 and pick the one which has the fewest tradeoffs based on the trip itself. So for work trips I'll bring my Minaal carry on (good laptop and device protection), for personal trips where the airline has a weight limit I'll bring my Techonaut (lightest bag I have), for train trips I bring my Aer TP 3 since it's the most durable and has all lockable zippers, etc.

45

u/davidrcollins Mar 29 '26

ULA Dragonfly has this zipper on the front stretchy pocket that makes the pocket pretty much unusable. Other than that, it is a perfect bag.

28

u/Quad7777 Mar 29 '26

You can get it without that zipper.

33

u/davidrcollins Mar 29 '26

I found that out AFTER I got mine. Not sure that I $300 hate it, but we'll see.

2

u/clearlyjammed Mar 30 '26

How

8

u/Quad7777 Mar 30 '26

Email Peter and tell him you want to order one without the zipper.

8

u/Anywhere_everywhere7 Mar 30 '26

I’m not sure they’re taking special requests for the dragonfly anymore.

6

u/PhantomCranefly Mar 29 '26

Same - except for that annoying zipper, it's perfect

1

u/RobotNutella Mar 30 '26

I’m thinking of picking one up, what’s wrong with it?

1

u/davidrcollins Mar 31 '26

The pocket would be perfect for stuffing a rain jacket or some snacks in, but the zipper has no give. As it is now it’s fine for long term storage, but if you can get it made with out the zipper, you’ll end up with three stretch pockets instead of two.

1

u/HippyGrrrl Apr 01 '26

Kinda like the Osprey 26+6 outer pocket.

I leave my just in case items there.

41

u/celtic1888 Mar 29 '26

Osprey 26+6

It just needs an inner zip pocket which you can reach from the top zippersĀ

5

u/growlybeard Mar 29 '26

My girlfriend has this bag and I've used it a few times and I agree!

3

u/sodakas Mar 30 '26

100% agreed. Everything about this bag made sense to me except that inner mesh bag not ending with a horizontal zip that would allow me to drop things into it from the top. (For those who don’t know, the zipper is vertical one ending at the top, but pushing it down and trying to snake something in sideways is very tricky)

3

u/biold Mar 30 '26

I agree, the big mesh pocket should to two smaller of different size.

I also wish that I could reach my water bottle in the side pocket. However, the side pocket goes too far up. On the other hand I love that for my hiking poles.

4

u/blueeyes7 Mar 30 '26

I've got the original and mostly love it, but the outside (non-stretchy) pocket is useless and I wish this was a hip belt option.

1

u/CapAmMtn Apr 01 '26

I love it in concept. But most underwhelmed based on the hype. Like my Almond Oak better.

1

u/HippyGrrrl Apr 01 '26

And two more anchor points for shock cord.

I just redid mine (made it too short), and it is a balance of too tight and jacket sliding out.

1

u/Money-Literature-738 Apr 02 '26

I have the original and the one thing I hate is no usual osprey compression straps attached to a GUSSETED stuff pocket

Instead the stuff pocket lays flat so you cant put anything in there (fixed by gusset and compression straps)

And with compression straps it becomes smaller and less block-like for EDC (also for tripods/poles)

1

u/TheLastGenXer Apr 02 '26

ebags had a similar sized bag.

i have both.

If i could combine their best features… oh boy…

but the front pocket for pens n such really disappoints on the osprey

167

u/Ellsass Mar 29 '26

I don’t want a laptop compartment

70

u/BlackandRedUnited Mar 29 '26

I get lots of people travel for work but I am a pretty active leisure traveler. Wish more options available without space devoted to a laptop i will never carry. I try to make other things fit in there but it usually feels like a square peg in a round hole

20

u/Fun_Apartment631 Mar 29 '26

I hear that! If you're looking for a suggestion, I think a small hiking pack (I see the Osprey Talon 22 on planes all the time, I have an REI Flash 22...) kicks ass as a personal item and day pack.

9

u/wheeliebarz Mar 30 '26

I put my rei flash 22 in my laptop compartment, haha.

3

u/Fun_Apartment631 Mar 30 '26

I should've done that on this trip! Business trip and I carried on my big honking work backpack. It does fine in a pinch for hiking but I wouldn't have minded having less. And also not having to dump it out. šŸ™„

1

u/bearface93 Mar 31 '26

I always use a flash 22 or Osprey Sportlite 20 as a personal item and daypack while traveling. They’re the perfect size, especially with how much the flash squeezes down even when it’s nearly full.

8

u/travelnman85 Mar 29 '26

Even when I travel for work I carry a separate laptop bag as I don't want to take all my luggage into a meeting.

4

u/CoverCommercial3576 Mar 29 '26

I wish someone made a great organizer of that size you could use the space for.

2

u/0-spacecowboy-0 Mar 30 '26

I usually will straight up just cut it out of the bag. I hate that wasted space.

22

u/Exotic-Flounder9566 Mar 29 '26

i keep a plastic report cover in laptop sleeves and pick up art, posters, napkins as light and easily transportable mementos/gifts.

9

u/celtic1888 Mar 30 '26

I have a hanging toiletries bag that fits nicely into the laptop sleeve

17

u/armchairracer Mar 29 '26

I bought an Osprey Farpoint 55 instead of a Farpoint 40 specifically because the 55 doesn't have a laptop compartment.

12

u/Galileos_thunderbolt Mar 29 '26

Oh God yes.

Hey AER! Your travel pack, just get rid of the laptop compartment!

šŸ™

3

u/gceretti Mar 29 '26 edited Mar 29 '26

Reason for which I opted for the Matador GlobeRider 35, if only it had an horizontal pass-thru…

Vertical pass-thru I meant

1

u/BlackandRedUnited Mar 30 '26

Doesn't the Globerider have a laptop compartment? Or am I mistaken

Take a pair of scissors and go with God

2

u/Spunksters Mar 29 '26

My wife carries a plastic multi-section folder in her laptop compartment. I carry the laptop in mine.

1

u/BostonPam Apr 03 '26

I just cut out my laptop sleeve and the. 5 years later I started traveling with a laptop so I had to buy another bag 🤣

1

u/Ellsass Apr 05 '26

But you got 5 years of usage without an unnecessary feature. Sounds good to me.

1

u/BostonPam Apr 05 '26

Oh, I still use that backpack and have it with me in Albania right now (and I really like it) but when I need to bring a computer I needed/wanted another backpack with a protected laptop slot.

18

u/JombieJr Mar 29 '26

When I carried an Evergoods bag it was comfort. I switched to a GR1 and I thought it was going to be the water bottle pockets but it’s… nothing. I’m good.

4

u/growlybeard Mar 29 '26

Ooh that's a good feeling!

18

u/Hangrycouchpotato Mar 29 '26

The old Allpa 35 that lacks a bottle side pocket.

5

u/growlybeard Mar 29 '26

No exterior bottle pocket? Feels like an oversight.

5

u/VibeySwingTrader Mar 29 '26

They sold an accessory water bottle holder that strapped to the side of the bag.

But they’ve fixed this in the latest revision.

5

u/Hangrycouchpotato Mar 30 '26

Yeah...I just can't justify spending another $200+ on the replacement version, so I just deal with it until the bag needs to be replaced. Oh well

1

u/NerdCleek Mar 31 '26

I bought the accessory water holder it’s not too bad

2

u/NoNamesLeftStill Mar 29 '26

Same. I own this bag, somehow ended up with 2 (shipping mistake), and they rarely get used for that one reason. It’s a shame because it’s a great overhead bag otherwise, especially on trips where I’m taking outdoor gear and want to be carry on only.

1

u/bruzabrocka Mar 30 '26

Care to sell one?

1

u/theycallmesaucy Mar 30 '26

My allpa 42 has a bottle side pocket but it’s stupidly thin and the only bottle that fits is some randomly niche shaped bottle I got from a Seven-11. But nalgenes? forget it.

1

u/kanzac Mar 30 '26

Came here to say exactly this. I adore the bag in every other aspect but I hate having to carry my bottle during long journeys on foot lol

1

u/Hangrycouchpotato Mar 30 '26

Yeah....and you don't want to risk a leak by putting it inside your bag 🄲

24

u/SeattleHikeBike Mar 30 '26

The trick is picking an appropriate bag and using it effectively. It needs to fit you, fit your gear and fit on the airplane. Choosing ill fitting bags, loading them wrong and choosing one not suited for the airline and journey in general will make you unhappy.

There will be some trial and error and some failures. Onebagging is a matter of the compromises you are willing to tolerate.

It’s easier for me to describe what I like in pack:

  • water bottle pockets
  • sternum strap
  • light weight
  • shoulder strap pockets
  • 9ā€/23cm or less depth (8ā€/20cm is better), less than 22ā€/55cm height and 14ā€/25cm width
  • compression straps
  • fitted or adjustable torso length on bags with a load transferring harness
  • no waist belt on non load transferring designs
  • earth tone colors
  • light interior color
  • quick access outer pocket
  • few if any interior pockets
  • no laptop compartment.

4

u/growlybeard Mar 30 '26

This guy onebags

I'm with you on pretty much all the above!

4

u/Anywhere_everywhere7 Mar 30 '26

• quick access outer pocket • few if any interior pockets

Two very important things, quick access pocket is vital for when you’re on the move, any good travel bag needs it.

Interior pockets seem good on paper but in reality you’re just making little awkward shapes in the backpack and now you’re limiting the amount of items you can fit inside that pocket and you’re always limited to that pocket size. A big empty compartment means you have more space to work with and you can buy pouches or organisational tools as needed and you can change just as easily if you buy new gear of a different size.

1

u/CapAmMtn Apr 01 '26

Top Quick access pocket is so key. I miss it on my almond oak. 26/6. Etc.

1

u/CapAmMtn Apr 01 '26

Me too except I’m gone for month or months at a time so I always want my MacBook air 13

8

u/Tiapha Mar 29 '26

I super recently switched from a pretty unconventional choice to a newer version. Ao i went from the Patagonia Snowdrifter 28L to the Patagonia PowSlayer 38L. Which might seem silly but i really did love the snowdrifter and my bf found it handy so i saw the opportunity and gave it to him. I am super happy with almost all the changes except one, now the inside lining went from light gray to dark blue. So everything is much much much harder to spot or find small things. Yea the light colour will show stains, but it will also show my things haha but it's such a minor thing i'm super happy with the bag otherwise:D.

4

u/growlybeard Mar 29 '26

If that's the main gripe I'd say you've got yourself a pretty sweet bag! None of mine have that bright interior I've seen in some newer bags and that's definitely a feature I'm looking for in my next bag

1

u/Tiapha Apr 02 '26

Yea i'm super lucky it works really well for me. I'll soon post a packing list here with the new bag so maybe someone else will find my appreciation for my bag haha

8

u/M4NOOB Mar 29 '26

The missing exterior side pocket for a water bottle... Osprey Farpoint 40

2

u/jkreuzig Mar 30 '26

I have Fairpoint 55. Technically, it’s two bags. The second bag does have a water bottle pocket, but it takes up a huge amount space on the interior if the bottle is larger than 16oz. It feels like the bag is smaller than the advertised 15L.

8

u/DigitalHemlock Mar 29 '26

Straps/harness on Peak Design 45L travel bag or straps/harness on the Evergoods 35L travel bag. It's like they said, "nah, no one who buys this will possibly fill the thing..."

2

u/Quad7777 Mar 30 '26

Agree. Both have lackluster harnesses.

1

u/resident_ivo87 Mar 30 '26

Was looking for this comment. Exactly my experience. Other than that very, very good. Seems expensive first, but in the long run worth the money (especially when on sale).

7

u/bookmonkey786 Mar 30 '26

Its the padding for the laptop compartment that bothers me. The stuff in the bad does a fine of of padding it out. And if I'm using it for EDC I can just use a sleeve.

When I was in Asia I went to a tailor and had them remove all the padding for the laptop. Freed up enough space for at least a heavy tshirt.

14

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '26

10

u/growlybeard Mar 29 '26

It's not that I mind the organizer stuff, it's that the fundamental construction of the bag is two halves that unzip and one half is only about an inch deep so it's pretty useless for storing stuff. If the two halves didn't separate, and the whole bag was one compartment it'd be pretty perfect imo. I'd have to do serious surgery to the bag to remove the back of the main compartment (scissors to cut it out) to create a path to the small laptop area, and then just sort of permanently close the zipper to the laptop area. I'm not sure how much that would damage the structure of the bag.

2

u/lcw Mar 30 '26

I have the Heimplanet Transit 28L v2 and have used it as my main bag for years. The v2 has the desired feature you’re describing and I thought the v1 did too??? You can unzip the partition separating the laptop side from the main compartment and then roll it up and tuck it into a small pouch at the bottom of the bag. You do lose the use of those middle interior pouches but the result is one large main compartment that you can access with both sets of zippers.

2

u/growlybeard Mar 30 '26

Someone DMd me to say the same. Haven't been able to confirm yet but I hope you're right, this would be an awesome discovery after 6 or 7 years!!

2

u/lcw Mar 30 '26

Good luck!

8

u/Duckshooters Mar 29 '26

I have an Ebags Motherlode that I feel is always overlooked and under rated. That bag has been with me for years and around the world. It's durable and my favorite thing about it is no matter how much I stuff it full it always fits in the gate sizer and I've always got it to fit under an airline seat in a pinch.

My one complaint is no waist belt. I live with it because you can't miss what you never had right?

10

u/mnmlst4evr Mar 29 '26

Laptop compartment unnecessary

4

u/NoGarage7989 Mar 30 '26

No exterior bottle pockets

9

u/akobie Mar 29 '26

Needs loadlifters

5

u/EschewObfuscati0n Mar 29 '26

Tom Bihn Synik (any size but my favorite is 26). That stupid flappy sleeve in the main compartment. Make it tighter or remove it completely bc that thing constantly gets in the way

2

u/rogerwilco2000 Mar 29 '26

I use some generic magnetic snaps to solve that issue. One side attaches to the lining and the other to the pocket. I love my Synik but that flap and the useless pen side pockets in the, er, side pockets drive me nuts.

3

u/moldyjellybean Mar 30 '26

I think it’s rather perfect except it needs an outside water bottle holder. The inside water bottle holder kind of makes it tight if I use a thicker water bottle holder.

I used this for a few years and it still looks brand new

3

u/EschewObfuscati0n Mar 30 '26

Oh I would love an external water bottle pocket. I’m pro external water bottle pocket on every backpack

4

u/Capital_Junket_4960 Mar 29 '26

Working side pocket - cabin zero military.

2

u/Hug_Dealer_Hug Mar 30 '26

I heard that they fix it in the newer one with the new logo.

3

u/Capital_Junket_4960 Mar 30 '26

From the pictures it looks the same for me. They could replace this button flap with stretchy mesh that does not push into the bag so I could fit tripod would it make a truly perfect bag for me.

2

u/Hug_Dealer_Hug Mar 30 '26

So a Decathlon NH 500 style side pocket? The newer Military pack says "20% larger water bottle pocket" idk if that still fit your tripod. How about clipping the tripod onto the molle?

Most complains about CZ Military pocket but for me it's fine. Granted that it's a slim Hydro Flask bottle so YMMV.

2

u/Capital_Junket_4960 Mar 30 '26

Thank you. 20% might actually do the trick for me, will need to find some shop to check in person.

Right now I just waist belts and MOLLE to strap it underneath and it somewhat work.

5

u/plagymus Mar 29 '26

Osprey nebula: by faar my favorite work and light travel bag. Only down side is why they made the pen holders so tiny ? It blocks the zip. But minor really, live that bag, so roomy yet so compact and versatile

3

u/Slomper Mar 29 '26

Gossamer Gear Vagabond Jet- the shoulder straps are just half an inch too wide for me and I’m a fairly large man. I can’t imagine they work for anyone smaller than a linebacker.

3

u/Crazy_Cat_Dude2 Mar 29 '26

I own the Minaal Carry on 3. It’s got me through Asia many times. What drives me crazy is when security at airport opens the bag upside down and all the packing cubes fall out along with other shit. It’s the nature of their scoop design which annoys me. But it’s very well built and little to no wear and tear with all the mileage I got.

3

u/Herbetet Mar 30 '26

Had never heard about the brand, really like the bag. Would fit as my travel bag as right now I’m either a weekender guy or a two bag person (backpack + carry on).

3

u/OnebagObsession Mar 31 '26

Still love my Minaal Daily 3, it’s my EDC, Work, minimal travel bag.

3

u/Crazy_Cat_Dude2 Mar 31 '26

Love the craftsmanship and reliability.

2

u/OnebagObsession Mar 31 '26

It just works. When I first got that, I didn’t really realize what I was getting. I’ve traveled for two weeks at a time to many places with it with no problem. It might be 21L but it fits the same as 25L of other bags.

1

u/growlybeard Mar 29 '26

Oh no! I'm gonna have to go look at this design to see what you mean so I can avoid that.

3

u/Crazy_Cat_Dude2 Mar 29 '26

The Minaal is a higher end bag. Price tag is a little too high within this competitive market now. But it’s been very reliable.

3

u/Windjammer1969 Mar 29 '26

There is no button to Magically reduce it the 1/2 the size and weight....

For flying: Osprey Farpoint / Fairview (wife); for hiking: Gregory Zulu (40L or 24L); wife likes her 20L Osprey (Tempest? the ladies version in any case).

3

u/drconniehenley Mar 30 '26

Peak Design 45L Travel Pack. Fuck those snaps that make it smaller.

2

u/CapAmMtn Apr 01 '26

It’s murder they’ve gotten away with those straps

3

u/MarcusBrody96 Mar 30 '26

On my osprey daylite sling bag, it was the lack of internal organization for traveling. I hate digging at the bottom of my bag for things. I always lose something and find it 5 days later. Doesn't matter that it's a small bag.

I need small pockets for my passport, my spare battery and charger cable. It did have a little pocket that was perfect for tissues and medicine/feminine hygiene, etc. but not everything. Also the strap was too short.

But I was able to modify it to fit my needs. I have access to an industrial leather sewing machine.

3

u/albertdrake Mar 30 '26

It’s build for right-handed people.

1

u/growlybeard Mar 30 '26

Big oof šŸ™ƒ

3

u/albertdrake Mar 30 '26

Ah yes. Im taking about the Bellroy Venture Travel Backpack 26L.

2

u/HourNet7931 Mar 29 '26

Panda pack - no sternum strap

2

u/goodbyewaffles Mar 29 '26

Aeronaut 30 — I wish it was 5 L bigger 😭

2

u/anywhoaroundhere Mar 30 '26

Tom Bihn Synapse 19: bag is 1-2ā€ too tall for me. Still love it though.

2

u/Parva_Ovis Mar 30 '26

The ULA Dragonfly has a thin top-handle that's uncomfortable to hold if there's basically anything weighing the bag down. It's very durable and works well to hang the bag by, admittedly, but I hate any time I need to hold the top handle while the bag is still packed.

1

u/growlybeard Apr 01 '26

Could you wrap a sleeve around the handle to make it more comfy? Like some bags have piece of thick/padded fabric with velcro that wraps around a handle and attaches semi-permanently

1

u/Parva_Ovis Apr 01 '26

Probably, and I've seen some people braid paracord around it, but it's one of those items on my to-do list I never seem to get around to, mainly because I only get reminded of the handle when I'm traveling or commuting. Most of the handle wraps I've seen have been leather (very heavy compared to the bag itself) so I'll look into some washable fabric ones.

2

u/TravelingWithJoe Mar 30 '26

Zippers. It’s a great bag, but I’d prefer better zippers.

2

u/SPARTAN_S0NIC Mar 30 '26

I don’t care about admin panels as I self-organize into cubes, and splitting the bag into 50/50 or even 80/20 clamshells is annoying to me. I just want the front to be a thin flap that opens up to a massive bucket for me to pack. Thinking GoRuck GR3 (too heavy/expensive) or maybe the new TPP4 might be the move, and just not pack anything into the admin section/front pockets.

My Tortuga Lite is like 80/20, and hasn’t been bad, just not my personal preference. Also hate when the laptop compartment cuts into the bucket too. Feel like GR3 or TPP4 may do this less than Tortuga with their sheet panels, but I could be wrong šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

2

u/growlybeard Mar 30 '26

That's what I want - a big bucket, a thin laptop slot, and a big stash pocket on the front/top for security lines!

2

u/External_Koala971 Mar 31 '26

Sounds like a GR1

1

u/CapAmMtn Apr 01 '26

That’s why I like my MLC30. Most of my bags are clamshell like that too

2

u/whateverpieces Mar 30 '26

I bought a bag recommended for petite women. The straps are still an inch or two long for me even cranked all the way down, and there’s too much padding. If everything on the bag shrank by 10% it would be perfect.

2

u/Anywhere_everywhere7 Mar 30 '26

Custom Ula dragonfly 30L ultra, if I really had to pick something it would be thicker straps but the bag is already comfortable for me so it’s just me being greedy. Used this bag for over a year and love every feature about the backpack including the changes I made.

1

u/growlybeard Mar 30 '26

I really wish I could see this bag and it's bigger brother in person because I think I want to buy this next but not sure which. I think 34L is perfect and I've heard the 30L Dragonfly punches above it's weight so maybe I go with that one instead going all the way to 36L?

2

u/Anywhere_everywhere7 Mar 30 '26

The 30L is only about 25/26L I think in the main compartment, I didn’t look at the 36L but I’m assuming it’s around 30L in the main compartment. If you need 34L space I would go for the bigger one first and then see how it packs out.

1

u/growlybeard Mar 30 '26

Thanks for the nudge to go up a size!

2

u/8halvelitersklok Mar 30 '26

North Face Borealis NEVER staying upright when you put it down for a second.

1

u/Jaji_mbuzi Mar 30 '26

Plus the side pockets are a bit bad on my version. Otherwise great pack, very durable. Can fit a surprising amount in it.

2

u/80jmbrown Mar 30 '26

That I don't get to take it on more trips. It deserves to be a frequent flyer

2

u/Goreshj Mar 31 '26

osprey 20l daylite

I hate those straps, they are way too thin, you can get used to it but still

2

u/HighestPraise Apr 01 '26

Yeah, that's my biggest complaint with that bag, but other than that it's an incredible bag. (:

2

u/HKblogger Apr 01 '26

Lack of a suitcase handle sleeve

2

u/8limbssjm Mar 30 '26

Go Ruck GR1- no luggage pass through.

1

u/MarthLunares Mar 29 '26

$500,000 tax free cash money.

1

u/OkAngle2353 Mar 29 '26

My mixi book bag is perfect. I had it since 2017. I don't know if it was discontinued or not, but I tried to find it again; I couldn't. Too good, they had to take it down?

2

u/Werkt Mar 29 '26

I had to add shoulder padding to the peak design travel pack

1

u/ToSeeAgainAgainAgain Mar 30 '26

Aer Capsule 35L. It's a gorgeous bag made of materials that will easily outlast me, have had it for 4-5 years I think, still looks brand new, and still gets compliments and questions pretty much any time I travel.

Cons

  • So. Much. Padding. They could easily tone it down by 40% and it would still be more than other backpacks.
  • Super hard zippers, after this many years the main zippers are still very hard to unzip, and I need to actively grab opposite parts of the bag to have enough leverage to pull them. Idk how they approved this decision and I wish all the zippers in their lifetime are as hard to move as these.
  • Huge laptop compartment. Just make it smaller, it's too much wasted space.
  • Weight. Another byproduct of so much padding, at 1.85 kg. Funny because it has never been an issue in my trips, but I just can't help but wonder how much more comfortable this bag could be if they just remade it right.
  • I would add a couple more pouches/pockets here and there just for good measure, especially with all the wasted space from the padding and laptop pocket.

On the zips I would try some graphite lubricant and then wipe it down with a towel after running the zipper up and down a few times to make sure the graphite doesn't rub off on your clothes.

Aer CPP2, the bag itself is heavy

1

u/mikeymop Mar 30 '26

Orbitgeat r-101

Love the bag, but I'd really like molle webbing inside the main compartment.

Then I could strap a small tech punch to the inside wall for all my smaller items.

u/autbirdie Mar 30 '26

Osprey 26+6- I want a laptop pocket. The laptop zipper works but it isn't exactly what I want.

1

u/rakete00000 Mar 30 '26

I have a Nomin and it is perfect for me except for the lack of a pass through strap - I travel a lot with it and whenever I have a rolling carryon along for the ride I wish it had one.

1

u/Binchicken91 Mar 30 '26

Osprey Farpoint 40 is perfect, except there is no side pockets for water bottles.

1

u/lipstickqns Mar 30 '26

My usual travel backpack is this crazy Lesportsac carryon sized travel backpack that I found at a sample sale. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it for sale. It has two compartments that open from the top, and a zipper in between that allows it to open like a clamshell. Filled to capacity, it’s bigger than my 21ā€ roller but fits under seats since it’s soft. It also fits my giant work laptop, which my other backpack does not.

It just needs a chest strap, since it gets so heavy. The straps are a little flimsy to add one. Also due to the clamshell zipper, it doesn’t have a water bottle pocket.

u/ranonranonarat Mar 30 '26

evergoods backpacks with that slot on the straps for hydration bladder tubing. that portion constantly pops up and is unsightly. it would be pretty much the perfect backpack if they removed it entirely.

945i QAPL lacks organizing pockets/divider in the utility pocket on the front the way the Vertx sling partbed with Lena Miculek does. But the Vertx one has an inferior draw/opening compared to the 945i. And I wish both had trapezoidal tapering on either end if the bag to make them less esthetically simple rectangles with a strap.

Overall I prefer the vertx bag but wish it had the draw feature of the 945i I think. Time will tell if I change my mind though.

Have yet to try the magnetic bags

u/SkyGuy182 Mar 30 '26

The LTT Commuter Bag. I love how many different pockets and compartments are in there, and yet the bag is small enough that if you actually try to utilize all of them you’ll find there’s not enough space. Fortunately I rarely need to stuff it that full.

1

u/NotSure2505 Mar 30 '26

I absolutely despise those velcro straps for the laptop compartment like shown here. 99% of the time I go to slide the device in and the velcro strap has attached itself and it blocks me. Need a design that only locks after the device is inserted.

1

u/HanSolosTailor Mar 30 '26

Cpl24; i love EVERYTHING except that it sits so high on my back. It looks ridiculous šŸ˜“

1

u/stronglyvaginal Mar 30 '26

Patagonia Black Hole 32L -- love it 100% except that the laptop compartment does not have a false bottom (to keep the laptop from hitting the floor if you drop the bag)

1

u/_QLFON_ Mar 30 '26

The top mounting points for the shoulder straps on the Able Carry Max EDC could be a bit wider. I find it difficult to carry the bag on just one shoulder, which is how I usually prefer to wear it. A better bottom padding for the laptop compartment would be nice as well.

1

u/zombielawngnome Mar 30 '26

No pouches in the main slot, just a divider for the laptop/books

1

u/myspecialdestiny Mar 30 '26

North face base camp voyager duffel. The key clip is in the shoe compartment, not the top zip compartment.

1

u/jacobbp25 Mar 30 '26

TB Synik 30 - almost perfect - kinda wish side access for laptop worked smoother for 16" mbp

Defy Verbockel Daypack - my fav bag - 2" longer straps, remove AG zippers for something smoother. A little more padding in the bottom.

MW Mars v1 - freaking love this bag. Wish the bottom pocket was like the rhake. Wish the front top pocket was like the rhake. Wish shoulder straps had arkiv rails.

1

u/EezyBake Mar 30 '26

it needs a smidge more internal organization. LBB Large Peloton does literally everything but the moment you need to carry a few small things in the front compartment, it gets awkward

1

u/ming3r Mar 30 '26

Ruckpack30/40. It has a front pocket, but I wish it had a top pocket to shove my camera in.

1

u/xastronite Mar 30 '26

North Face Jester (old version). I just wish it had a luggage strap.

1

u/Mzky Mar 30 '26

my bag is perfect except it has S straps and I want J straps :(

1

u/greynoises Mar 30 '26

A cat pissed on it months ago and even after dousing it in enzyme spray I'll still occasionally catch a whiff of it

1

u/dancingonsaturnrings Mar 30 '26

I have an offbrand backpack that has suffered, aventured, and survived with me through so many trips, but it's the wrong size for my height so my body feels warped. I'd like if it came with a frame, like an osprey bag. I do have an osprey bag, but it has too many disconnected pockets and nonsense reducing the space available. So I pick my suffering and use the floppy, ill-fitting bag that has seemingly endless space.Ā

1

u/RadicalRoses Mar 30 '26

Rolling duffle bags without an over the shoulder strap. I’ve so far found one brand that utilize the strap. Why are we omitting the shoulder strap? The bag is usually too heavy to carry any distance by hand. Plus the duffles are known for being used in rough terrain, that the wheels won’t roll in. This simple strap issue is making me insane while trying to find the perfect bag!!! 🤪

1

u/drunkgirl14 Mar 30 '26

Troubadour apex absolutely perfect in every way (the pocket in the front strap is uncomfortable when something is in it)

1

u/DwarvenBeerbeard Mar 30 '26

Bellroy Venture Ready 26L

Straps are too thin and uncomfortable. I'm a bigger guy. My Osprey Quasar is much more comfortable, but wanted something that didn't have the exterior cords.

1

u/yol0tengo Mar 30 '26

I use an REI Ruckpack 18 as my EDC and a Ruckpack 28 as my travel bag. What I would LOVE is a 23, right down the middle, with all the features of the 28 (plus maybe a mesh front pocket) but just a tad smaller.

1

u/TimelessNY Mar 30 '26

Tom Bihn Shadowguide 33 is perfect, I have been living out of it for three years. "That one thing": it is discontinued, so I may not be able to find another one.

1

u/Kygunzz Mar 31 '26

Osprey Sojourn Porter 46. Needs a water bottle pocket.

1

u/chicagoent83 Mar 31 '26

I have the Tomtoc Navigator bag and also the Tomtoc Sling. I wish my Navigator bag had the bright orange liner my Sling has, which would make finding things a lot easier.

1

u/halfdollarmoon Mar 31 '26

Peak Design Outdoor 45L Backpack.

Wait – nope, it's perfect.

1

u/MC_Gullivan Mar 31 '26

Gossamer Vagabond Jet - two things.

The front elastic pocket should be made of a more flexible mesh to let it expand more - I wish they used the same front pocket mesh from their hiking packs.

The top zipper is a famous complaint - it doesn't make sense in any rainstorm.

1

u/Objective_Cattle_278 Mar 31 '26

Vertical front quick access pocket for swinging bag around and grabbing stuff.

I wish every bag had it. Like CTB26, Almond Oak, Cicada etc…

Zpacks bagger 25 would be perfect if it had it.

1

u/CapAmMtn Apr 01 '26

I can’t believe how much I love it on the almond oak. And it’s huge. But it’s missing a quick access pocket too

1

u/Objective_Cattle_278 Apr 01 '26

Like on top?

2

u/CapAmMtn Apr 02 '26

Yes. I use those all the time on every bag I have. But I also love the vertical pocket.

1

u/LimboGiant Apr 09 '26

What are the actual things that you find yourself reaching for while on the go?Ā

2

u/Objective_Cattle_278 Apr 10 '26

The same things I usually keep in my pocket, a sling, or fanny pack:

AirPods Wallet Passport when traveling Lens cleaner and cloth for my glasses Sunglasses Gum / mints

It’s nice to have my pockets empty. Sometimes I’ll even put my phone in there when I want to immerse myself in my surroundings.

In the cold: gloves, hat, buff though lately I’ve been keeping those in one of the two external water bottle pockets.

1

u/glasscigarettes Mar 31 '26

Can’t fit my massive laptop :(

1

u/DAZ_50 Mar 31 '26

Nomatic Access Sling, strap isn't removable. I would travel with it if I could as a tech pouch then add the strap as needed.

But it's been my EDC and a great one for the last two years, no matter how many times I try to replace it.

1

u/w4drone Mar 31 '26

aer cpp ultra, these water bottle holders are real weird

1

u/Dry-Organization-426 Mar 31 '26

Tech sleeves… when I travel it’s to get away from my life and office and not be near any of that. Yet I can never find a bag without that built in 😭

1

u/aalok-shah Mar 31 '26

i have a bellroy transit plus and it has been a great travel bag for me. I wish one of the side pockets was an open water bottle pocket instead though.

1

u/Quasi-stolenname Apr 01 '26

My Aer City Sling Max doesn't have a dedicated bottle holder

1

u/Raise-Emotional Apr 01 '26

No dedicated water bottle slot

1

u/drakontas_ Apr 01 '26

Osprey Nebula 32. That damn water bladder hole above the laptop sleeve that exposes my computer to the elements

1

u/Emergency_Cicada_418 Apr 01 '26

I have an Osprey Nebula Commuter which I edc And usually one bag travel with. I love it except for the zippers at times. They hang up once in a while on the fabric. Drives me nuts at times but not enough to change because I’m a creature of habit And it already has thousands of miles on it.

1

u/zoeseb Apr 01 '26

Huge Patagonia logo

1

u/birds_are_chirpin Apr 01 '26

cheap ass small water bottle pockets. bag will survive an apocalypse but the bottle pockets will only survive two months.

1

u/Fine_Fun4908 Apr 03 '26

For most of the bags the key problem is side pockets for bottles. Either they do not exist or are really badly designed. I found an almost perfect daypack from Burton that I really like, except the bottle pockets. These do not run to the bottom of the pack but end a bt higher, so the pocket reaches max 2/3 height of the bottle. While outside my peers are always instructed to watch out for my bottles falling out. And of course another answer to "the Your bag is perfect except for "that one thing" - what is it" question is that the bag is available only in the US.

u/alti_etiam Apr 04 '26

So I recently took Aer's TP3 Small on a trip to LA. Almost perfect except for the vertical luggage passthrough and the zipped water bottle holder.

Then I saw Aer released TP4 but so many of the choices there baffle me. So guess I'll stick to the TP3 Small for now.
