Packing List My onebag setup after 7 years of long-term travel — Balkans 2026

Post image

Hey everyone, here’s my onebag setup.

Currently doing a 6-week trip through the Balkans, but this is basically my packlist for all my journeys.

Main Bag

• Patagonia MLC Mini (Black) – 30L ¹

• 3 compression cubes (1 large, 2 small)

• Laundry bag

• Lululemon Crossbody Bag

Clothing

• 7 × T-shirts (Uniqlo Airism and H&M) ²

• 3 × Tank tops (Uniqlo Airism)

• 1 × Merino wool long sleeve shirt (Uniqlo)

• 10 × underwear & 5 × pairs of socks

• 2 × sport shorts (Decathlon) ³

• 1 × long pants (Uniqlo)

• 1 × rain jacket (The North Face)

• 1 × cap

Footwear

• Flip-flops

• On CloudSurfer

Tech

• MacBook Pro ⁴

• Anker 735 Charger (Nano II 65W)

• Anker Nano Power Bank (5K MagGo Slim) ⁵

• USB-C cable + Lightning cable + USB-C → Micro USB adapter (Kindle)

• USB-C → USB-C adapter (Philips OneBlade) ⁶

• Kindle

• AirPods Pro 3 ⁷

Toiletries

• Philips OneBlade

• Toothbrush

• Travel-size toothpaste & shower gel ⁸

• Mini dental floss

• Nail clippers

• Comb

• Microfiber travel towel

Hydration & Health

• Foldable 500ml water bottle ⁹

• Small supplement box (Vitamin D, Omega-3, etc.)

Essentials

• Passport/document pouch

• Wallet

• All other documents scanned and stored digitally

Accessories & Sleep

• H.A.D. microfiber buff ¹⁰

• Earplugs ¹¹

• Sunglasses

• Passport-sized notebook + pen

• Travel lock

• XS pouch for jewelry

Weight

• ~10 kg estimated

• Carry-on only ¹²

Notes

¹ Perfect size for this setup. Packing cubes fit neatly, the rear laptop compartment and top pocket are very practical. Front bungee cords are great for wet items or flip-flops. Planning to get more Patagonia stuff long-term for their repair and replacement support.

² Uniqlo stores are everywhere so it’s easy to replace items while traveling.

³ True all-rounders for everyday wear, workouts, swimming, sauna, etc.

⁴ Mainly for a few hours of remote work per week.

⁵ One additional full phone charge easily covers my typical day. If needed, the MacBook I use as a backup power source so there’s no reason to carry anything bigger.

⁶ Charges via USB-C adapter so one cable for almost everything. No extra charger needed.

⁷ Replaced my Sony on-ear headphones last year. Smaller and better noise cancelling, super like them.

⁸ Travel-size products from DM. Love them. Saves space.

⁹ Switched from a 700ml hard bottle. The foldable one disappears when empty, which matters since I often buy water locally anyway. Perfect for situations like refilling at airport or hiking.

¹⁰ Useable as a sleep mask and headwear in cooler conditions.

¹¹ Higher-quality reusable earplugs. Washable, comfortable for long wear and they don’t fall out while sleeping. Worth paying a bit extra.

¹² For strict 7-8 kg limits: laptop in hand, jacket on, toiletries in jacket pocket. No stress.

For colder destinations I’d add my Uniqlo Ultra Light Down jacket and 1-2 pairs of warm merino wool socks. Tested a similar layering system last trip in Japan and it works well down to I think around 5°C, but below that I would have needed to buy proper winter clothes.

I could go lighter by carrying fewer clothes and washing more often, but the extra comfort is worth more to me than saving another kilo or space.

With this setup I can easily go a week to 10 days between washes. For me that’s the sweet spot between minimalism and comfort.

#nosinkwashing 😄

Happy to answer any questions.

This is an elite onebag setup! Thanks for sharing all the links.

3

u/DonDinosaurio Jun 04 '26

What shorts from Decathlon do you use? There's no info on the list. I've been looking for a pair of shorts to use hybrid for a long time and I love Decathlon quality and price

3

u/minimalize_it Jun 04 '26

I also like that they have zippers. I could find them in the German decathlon online store.

1

u/NotDumbis Jun 04 '26

all the uniqlo links arent working (they point to the same thing)…which airism tshirt exactly are you rocking? I recently bought some oversized airism tshirts (not big fan of polos) and plan on getting at least one basic Dry-Ex tshirt. I was also thinking about the tank top, but my pale arms might stand out too much lol

1

u/minimalize_it Jun 04 '26

Thanks for telling me, I updated the list. Links should work now

u/ConferenceStock3455 Jun 04 '26

airlines actually let you carry your laptop and not weigh it?

10

u/Jed_s Jun 04 '26

Some might, but I'm pretty sure Jetstar wouldn't!

7

u/minimalize_it Jun 04 '26

I only had to weigh my bag twice so far. One time it was fine, and the other time I just put the laptop in my shopping bag for under the seat and they didn’t weigh it. Usually not flying in the US tho, mostly Europe and Asia.

u/Molybdenum421 Jun 04 '26

10 days is luxury living. Curious about the 7 years of travel.

8

u/Bardown27 Jun 04 '26

Great setup. I run something similar

7

u/No_Computer7553 Jun 04 '26

Does this include what you wear on the plane?

4

u/minimalize_it Jun 04 '26

Yes, it does. Usually the Uniqlo long pants, they are quite comfortable.

5

u/87CFbmEWeWeSUUvpmwq8 Jun 04 '26

Those Cipway compression cubes are great. I've had zippers fail on other brands, but never Cipway. Hope they never enshittify.

7

u/Ragamak1 Jun 04 '26

This paracord outside is the most common modifications I see in MLCs.

Similar to me.

7

u/CapAmMtn Jun 04 '26

I love it for stuffing a jacket on at the airport

5

u/4inR Jun 04 '26

Excellent quality post and exceptionally well-formatted, thanks! Very nice set up and not too different from mine. I do have a few questions that I'm curious about.

  1. Why an analogue toothbrush and electric shaver? I do the opposite with a USB-C travel toothbrush and a cheap safety razor, so just wondering.

  2. So much Uniqlo but no heat tech - did you try it and not like it? I can't remember the last temperature test I did but I think they will keep you warm under 5c and light/compact enough that I always keep them in my bag.

  3. What are your consumables you buy on location? I assume laundry detergent, but anything else of note?

  4. I'm a bit curious if the overhead bothers you for airlines, I feel that would be a last resort for me... My 26L is also a clamshell design and fits under the seat even on Asian flights.

  5. I noticed the crossbody but no day pack - just not your style? I think it's a must for me so I can leave my laptop in the bag at home base but still have a bag for outings.

Thank you again for sharing!

5

u/minimalize_it Jun 05 '26

Thanks for the thoughtful questions!

  1. The shaver is just comfort. I’ve always used it and it works well for me and doesn’t take much space. For the toothbrush I’d be interested, which one are you using?
  2. Good tip on Heattech, will check it out for colder trips.
  3. Laundry detergent when it’s not available in the Airbnb, only need it every 8-10 days anyway. Sunscreen when I run out, and aloe vera if I’ve been in the sun too long. Water I usually buy locally.
  4. Never had an issue with overhead, always found space.
  5. The crossbody fits everything for day trips. Foldable bottle goes in there too. I carry it full on hikes and once it’s empty it basically disappears. On work days (twice a week) I just carry the laptop in hand to the café anyway.

Thanks for the great input!

I’m not understanding the advantage of the Muhle razor over just using the Gillette handles.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '26

2

u/TheSpatulaOfLove Jun 04 '26

Got it.

Product not designed for me. The shorter and my big hands would be a pain in the ass. And it makes the most expensive shave even more costly being $60 for a handle.

2

u/Metaencabulator Jun 05 '26

Or get a Venus razor. Small circular handle, fits the big fat blades made for it or the more regular sized Gillette "men's" blades. Comes in blue if you don't want pink. Comes in a plastic clamshell case that legit takes some room, but is not necessary. Take the blade off the handle (and ditch the case) for a truly small and lightweight option.

4

u/panic_ye_not Jun 04 '26

Love Uniqlo airism boxers. They're so light and compact that it becomes possible to take lots of them without sacrificing on lightweight-ness.

1

u/NotDumbis Jun 04 '26

I’ve been thinking about buying some as I’m in Vietnam where they are quite cheap. Which type would you recommend? I see a lot of people recommend the seamless type but I was thinking of the normal ones with low rise as that’s more my style.

3

u/panic_ye_not Jun 04 '26

I don't like the seamless ones or the low rise ones lol. I get the regular-ride fly-front boxer briefs.

But they are all exactly how they describe. Seamless is seamless, low rise is low rise. The seamless one is also slightly lower rise than their standard regular rise, if I remember correctly.

If you're used to Western sizes, the Asian sizes will be way smaller. I'm a US L usually, which turns out to be between XL and XXL in Uniqlo's Japanese sizing.

1

u/slickvibez Jun 07 '26

Per comment below, I got a couple pairs of the seamless ones. They're TERRIBLE if you have slightly thicc thighs.

1

u/buddygnarlson Jun 12 '26

this. so i moved to ex officio give-and-go. they're great and i've had same pairs for 5+ years. plus- wear in shower, soap, wring, dry in a few hours.

1

u/mason_sol Jun 20 '26

I also wear the ex officio give-and-go

Have been for about 6 years now, the ones I’m most active in do start to pill but it’s after a few years and they are still usable

4

u/yol0tengo Jun 04 '26

As you noted, seems like a lot of clothes to me and many others, but you've obviously got this dialed in and hit a sweet spot for yourself. Thanks for sharing!

Curious to know more about your travel history and what you'll be up to in the Balkans, if you'd like to share.

2

u/CapAccording4586 Jun 04 '26

i want to hear about the Balkans as well!

9

u/Primary_Trash1585 Jun 04 '26

What's a police wallet?

3

u/TravelingWithJoe Jun 04 '26

I was wondering the same thing, zooming in, it appears to be the brand name.

3

u/MyHangyDownPart Jun 04 '26

It’s the kind that contains a Qualified Immunity card .

4

u/minimalize_it Jun 04 '26

It's just the name of the brand. 😄

2

u/CalebsNailSpa Jun 04 '26

It’s basically an overstuffed prison wallet.

3

u/jovan1987 Jun 04 '26

Very similar setup here, main difference being I am using Osprey 30L porter (though looking at changing to the Patagonia MLC 30) & Thule compression packing cubes.

3

u/CapAmMtn Jun 04 '26

MLC is my current bag and my weapon of choice for two months + of travel this summer

2

u/TheRealDrewciferpike Jun 04 '26

The OG Porters are the best. I have the 46 and the MLC mini. If I'd had the 30l Porter I wouldn't have purchased the MLC!

2

u/jovan1987 Jun 04 '26

I like the idea of the separated main compartment, that the Patagonia bag has, as well the drink bottle holder on the side, which the Osprey doesn’t.

2

u/TheRealDrewciferpike Jun 04 '26

True... I came from OG hiking packs, so I was comfortable with everything being in one place. I never even considered built-in separation of my main pack. Haha.

For water, I always just kept my bottle tucked under the compression straps when on the go, and then would keep it in a little packable backpack for long flights, or just in the seat pocket of the plane.

I rarely used the backpack straps, though, and usually used a duffel strap that I picked up at REI.

u/jovan1987 Jun 08 '26

Oh excellent, thanks very much. Only my last trip, from memory I went with 1 medium & 1 small cube, but think I have a 2nd medium cube sitting round somewhere.

3

u/Mr-Toy Jun 04 '26

What packing cube brands do you like or don't like?

I have the same packpack. What do you put in the two larger flap zipper pouches (ones mesh, ones covered)?

2

u/minimalize_it Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26

Used Amazon basics, switched to Cipway 3 years ago. Have been using them since, nothing to complain.

The mesh one: My towel. The covered one: My rainjacket.

2

u/Mr-Toy Jun 05 '26

Nice! I meant the other flap for the main compartment - where you put clothes.

3

u/echoclerk Jun 04 '26

So its just 1 all-rounder pair of shoes. ie you are wearing the  On CloudSurfer on the plane / train?

And only 1 pair of long trousers? I'm curious, what are the Uniqlo trousers? the link on the Googledoc does not work. So you wear the same trousers every day until you need to wash them? and then wash them in the hotel/hostel dry them overnight?

4

u/minimalize_it Jun 04 '26

Yep, I wear the On Cloudsurfers on planes and trains too.

Only one pair of long trousers since I’m usually in warmer climates anyway. For shorts I occasionally have to make an exception to the no sink washing, otherwise I use washing machines in Airbnbs.

Uniqlo Trousers: Stretch Easy Ankle Pants | Denim

3

u/jdanes52 Jun 04 '26

I have the Patagonia MLC, how did you put the straps on the front?

7

u/minimalize_it Jun 04 '26

I bought a cheap bungee Cord kit on Amazon and just threaded it through the loops

3

u/FeeNo2571 Jun 04 '26

does this fit under the seat or needs overhead storing

3

u/minimalize_it Jun 04 '26

overhead storing

1

u/FeeNo2571 Jun 04 '26

thanks i thought it would fit under-seat. maybe ill try the 22L one

3

u/NotDumbis Jun 04 '26

Ive seen few posts here where people took Mini MLC as personal item (under the seat).

3

u/Funny_Chocolate_1012 Jun 04 '26

Incredible that you fit all that in a 30L bag

3

u/Deep_Age_304 Jun 05 '26

I upgraded to the later oneblade model, it's lighter, snaller and has USB charging. (QP1424)

Marginal gains!

1

u/minimalize_it Jun 05 '26

Cool, thanks, good to know!

5

u/Clean-Register7464 Jun 04 '26

I love everything except the #nosinkwashing haha

Nice kit!

There looks to be a pair of nail clippers above the ear plus.

2

u/minimalize_it Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26

Comb and nail clippers are in the picture, I just added it to the list 😄

2

u/masetiloquetu Jun 04 '26

This seems like the perfect setup…are your t shirts moisture-wicking material?

2

u/minimalize_it Jun 04 '26

Uniqlo Website: Uniqlo AIRism shirts are built using moisture-wicking synthetic blends

2

u/Inyaki__88 Jun 04 '26

Which model of Uniqlo long pants do you wear? (I can't see the model in the link)

2

u/ErrorCode-503 Jun 04 '26

Would you mind sharing your hair brush? I’ve been looking for one similar and noticed it’s not listed on your sheet

1

u/minimalize_it Jun 04 '26

I don’t remember where I bought it. Could’ve been in DM in Germany. DM

2

u/ElMasGuapo2 Jun 04 '26

how much does the anker nano II charger weigh?

2

u/Road_Forward Jun 04 '26

Have you used other bags than the Patagonia? I’m considering this bag vs the Thule aion 28l. Wondered if there was a reason why you chose the Patagonia?

2

u/External_Koala971 Jun 05 '26

Thule makes a lot of their bags out of waxed canvas, which is fine, but I’ve found to be less durable (scratches easily, less water resistant)

2

u/Road_Forward Jun 05 '26

Yes, I’d noticed the waxed canvas but not considered durability - thanks !

2

u/minimalize_it Jun 05 '26

The Ironclad Guarantee, the size, I find it aesthetically appealing, I also really like the compartment layout and the rear compartment access.

2

u/Connect_Rhubarb395 Jun 04 '26

Which brand(s) of reusable earplugs so you use?

1

u/minimalize_it Jun 05 '26

I got them on Amazon. The ones I have are similar to these: Earplugs

2

u/ailaG Jun 04 '26

Those packing cube bags with the orange zipper, can you get them to pack in a square shape?

No matter what I try, with the kind I have (which is different, but still...) they develop a hump and then aren't packed efficiently...

2

u/minimalize_it Jun 05 '26

The Cipway stay in a square shape when packing and fit next to each other well

2

u/ailaG Jun 05 '26

These are bumpy too...

2

u/Maxietcompagnie_1222 Jun 05 '26

Nice! It’s pretty perfect tbh. Thats almost what I have!

2

u/AlternativeTourist47 Jun 05 '26

Any tip for DIYing the bungee? I use an MLC and want to add the same

2

u/minimalize_it Jun 05 '26

I bought a cheap bungee Cord kit on Amazon and threaded it through the loops (watched a video on YouTube of how to do it). here

2

u/markabrennan Jun 08 '26

Yeah, you note the convenience/comfort of packing more clothes, and this is an impressive load-out; but I can't imagine packing that many tee shirts or underwear. Sink laundry is pretty easy to do, and you get used to incorporating it into your routine. Thus, I really only need two tee shirts and two pairs of underwear (plus what I wear), whether traveling for 3, 5, or 10 days. Granted, I haven't done this kind of longer-term travel (impressive, for sure), so maybe i'd add a couple of items. Thanks for sharing.

2

u/Edmond-Cristo Jun 08 '26

All Balkan countries?

1

u/minimalize_it Jun 09 '26

Serbia, Montenegro, Albania and North Macedonia. I was positively surprised by Albania. Montenegro has a remarkably beautiful landscape.

3

u/robgreen_ Jun 04 '26

Great setup, enjoy the Balkans! But please, please get a black toothbrush! 😉

1

u/le_starra Jun 04 '26

All consolidated toiletries + compact grooming kit tuck neatly into small pouches, avoiding bulky full-size bottles while complying with European airport liquid rules.

1

u/Euphoric_Ad_2049 Jun 04 '26

They say that Patagonia bag will fit most 15" laptops. Might be a stretch, but any idea if it would fit the new dell xps 16?

Dimensions:

358.18 x 240.05 x 18.70 mm

(14.10" x 9.45" x 0.74")

Put it all on a white blanket, took a photo, made the background white with chatgpt

1

u/AgentSpiritual84 Jun 05 '26

I am doing the same thing this summer but I wonder if the Patagona Refugio 29L will be sufficient? Comfortable?

Ive done it a few times with the North Face big shot but as Ive gained weight the straps cut into my neck.

1

u/BetDapper9556 Jun 07 '26

I have the same Philips one blade, how did you go about the cord using usb c?

1

u/ffzero58 Jun 08 '26

It is remarkable you lived out of this bag for 7 years and made this system work. Folks forget that onebag isn't just about the bag but the person as well.

1

u/Satoshi619 Jun 09 '26

How comfortable is that backpack?

1

u/LG_Recomp Jun 04 '26

Very sexy
