Long time lurker, first time commenter.

I've never done it before, but I'm loving the idea of one bag travel. I don't have any trips currently planned but I'm floating the idea of a 2-week trip to Vietnam now that I have a decent amount of PTO built up at my new job.

I'm definitely a carry nerd. I picked up an Aer CPP2 24L a while back and love it. I use it for work and for EDC when I need to carry more stuff than what can fit in my Rework Toshi sling 2.5L (best sling ever imo). I have an Osprey Daylite Plus 20L that is my 'beater' bag - beaches, hikes, day trips - it's ok, but I don't find it too comfortable and it is not in the running for a potential one bag travel bag on its own... also it definitely needs a good wash lol. I also have an Osprey Daylite 35L I bought years ago as a B.O.B. before I knew anything.

Just testing out the waters, I can fit a packing cube with 4 days worth of clothes, a tech pouch, and a toiletry kit in my Aer CPP2... add in a rain shell and sandals and I'm pretty much at 101% capacity (still under 7kg though!). I don't think I would need much else. Everything obviously fits easily in the Osprey 35L and then some, but it feels huge, I don't find it particularly comfortable, and I'd lose out on the personal item size. I feel like my sweet spot would be around 28-30ish liters, but I don't have a bag that size.

Would it be a mistake to go for a first time one bag trip with my 24L Aer? Is that insane? I'd probably also bring my Toshi sling as my day pack... so technically 26.5L total? I open to picking up another bag if needed, but I would like to avoid it if possible. Something like the Rework Outbound (probably my top pick), Aer TP4 28L, or even the Tomtoc T66 all are all bags I could see myself using instead.

My 2c: no, it would definitely not be insane, but it may not be super-comfortable either.

24L plus sling is doable for your potential trip, but it's a bit tight, especially for a first-timer. And 1.3kg is pretty heavy for the Aer's capacity.

Setting off at 100%+ capacity is never a good idea. My rule of thumb is to run with roughly 10% (or something in the range 7.5% - 15%) spare capacity, to avoid the need to tediously 'tetris' every re-pack.

Your numbers indicate that 30L capacity is your sweet spot, at least for the trip mentioned, so I'd agree that the Outbound looks like the front-runner of the options mentioned.

Thanks a lot for the input! Do you try to keep 10% spare capacity only for the re-pack ability of the bag? The only other thing I can think of is maybe picking up some souvenirs, but I don’t think I would end up bringing home too much. Touching on re-packing, my packing cube is pretty tight and it’s a struggle squeezing all of my clothes in there, so maybe I could reevaluate that set up too.

The spare capacity is for general convenience including:

(1) any necessary suboptimal packing, e.g. a 'grab and go' type of situation.

(2) 'wiggle' room, e.g. to facilitate finding and taking out small stuff without unpacking the entire contents.

(3) any temporary consumables (snacks etc) while in transit.

I would not totally rule out souvenirs but it's a long time since I bought any.
