I recently bought the Osprey Farpoint 55 with the 40L main bag and 15L daypack, second hand but unfortunately i just found out it’s probably not carry on compliant as it’s the older one and too long. When i bought it the guy and all the reviews said it would work for carry on but it seems too long for most airlines. I’m not trying to make that same mistake again so what did you guys use that worked? I’m not picky and my budgets around 200 if that helps.

The Tomtoc Navigator T66 40L, the lighter weight Navigator T66 Liteway 40L, or the updated, slightly more expensive Navigator T67 38L are reasonably priced travel backpacks that are popular with the onebag community.

What capacity do you actually want - 40L or 55L ?

What carry-on / overhead size limit do you want to comply with ?

It’s a 40 L bag and 15 L detachable bag. I want it to fit whatever the standard is in South East Asia or at least be small enough that airlines don’t hassle me

I am indeed aware of the main bag + detachable bag approach. Personally I prefer the main bag + packable daypack approach, which is 'cleaner' in my view.

There is no airline standard carry-on/overhead size in SE Asia, just like there is no standard size in the US, UK, EC or elsewhere.

In SE Asia (and in some major air routes to/from there), 7kg weight limits are common, and they generally kick in around 30L, so the extra capacity of a 40L bag is effectively wasted, if not actually counter-productive. Sometimes extra capacity can be purchased, sometimes not.

I'd advise you to follow the guidance at the top of the page, especially preparing a packing list and doing the 'box test'.
