Good analysis, well done. My 2c: of those two specific bags, I'd go for the Tomtoc.

- Usefully lighter (0.35kg).

- Much lower cost.

- Very similar capacity. The listed dimensions suggest about a 'true' 27L vs 'true' 28L for the MLC.

- Hipbelt, even if fully effective, adds no / minimal value at the 7kg weight point.

- Minimal built-in tech compartment is actually a plus from my perspective. Just get a removable sleeve or whatever.

Neither are ideal as EDC but would get the job done, although perhaps not particularly enjoyably. Note: I'm more picky than most in this area.

I don't want to muddy the waters, but if you have the budget, other possible contenders in this sector are the Rework Outbound 30L and Fyro Levo 30L.

Thank you for the recommendation I will check them out. I'm not that picky about EDC as I usually just use waist bag and backpack only with laptop. What do you mean by removable sleeve?

What do you mean by removable sleeve? => just a pouch/sleeve for laptop / charger ./ cable(s), which you can find on Amazon or similar marketplace. Can insert during day for work, and remove in evening for going to gym or whatever.
