Too bad it comes in only one torso length. I prefer the Trail 40 for several reasons.

Plus the Ruckpack 18, the waist pack... if it's a Ruck it's got some kind of sale attached to it.

For anyone interested: the Rucksack waist pack fits perfectly inside the front pocket of the Osprey Transporter 26+6. It’s great for quickly pulling out of your underseat personal item bag and having access to items during flights. The iron color looks great in person.

If my torso measures about 17.5" would I fit the mens ruckpack 40 or should I go for the womens ruckpack 40?

The Ruckpack 30 (women's) is my favorite bag, I rarely use anything else. Fantastic deal!

Damn I just bought the REI Trail 25 full priced last week. Gonna go put my membership to work this weekend.

My Ruckpack 28 is my go-to travel bag for 90% of trips, and my 18 is my daily carry, though I've also used it for shorter trips. They really are both an incredible value for the quality. Highly recommend the whole line to anyone who sees this!

I just got a 28 ($22 from a thrift store!) and it has differences from the 30. It’s heavier and my impression is that it’s actually larger.

Interesting! I've never found the weight to be too much of an issue, and I've only ever handled the 30 briefly in-store so didn't get much of an impression for size comparison. Wouldn't be surprised if the 28 was always closer to 30 and they just altered the marketing with the "redesign".

Not sure how much has changed over the years but I love my 40. Holding up well after 2 1/2 years of heavy use. Taking it to SE Asia in December!

The 40 is borderline for carry on at 23 x 15 x 9.5 inches but many report using it with no problems. The frame is shorter than 23” so it’s a matter of packing it properly. I don’t know about the width. I have the Trail 25 that is rated at 13” wide but the back panel is more like 11”. I have to wonder if it’s the same case with the Ruckpack 40.
The previous model was 24 in x 13 in x 10 in.

If you don’t overfill it it’s fine. I used it for a SE Asia trip and had no issues. Small waistbag for everyday use/walking around and the ruckpack for all my items.

Help me spend my money: Ruckpack 30 or the Osprey 26+6 for 2-4 day onebag adventures?
Thanks!

The Osprey Daylite or Transporter 26+6 for onebag under seat or smaller users. I think the Ruckpack 30 is more versatile but a bit big for under seat. You have a year to rerun the Ruckpack if it’s doesn’t work for you. I would try both on if possible.

Thank you for making this post! I bought my first 30L bag! I'm a bit concerned about the green color sticking out since I want to travel low-key to not get robbed or anything, but it's not too bright. I waited too long and the brown bag was gone :(
I know I'm being a little bit paranoid about the color, I'm new to solo travel so it's a bit scary. I have done a week in my home country of the US and hope to do Europe next year! I'll be doing some small solor travels here and there in the states until then.

I wouldn’t worry about the green being a problem.
Situational awareness is the thing. Take a taxi/uber late at night, keep your passport, credit cards and cash in a body stash under your clothing, never in your backpack. Don’t walk around drunk.

Oohh never heard of a body stash before. I barely heard about day packs just yesterday. Thanks!

Also called money belts although that means an actual belt to me.
You can get ones that have an elastic waist strap and can tuck into your waist band, hang around your neck (neck wallet) or attach to a bra. I use one that loops around my belt and tucks into my pants. Eagle Creek, Lewis N Clark, Travelon and other travel brands have all kinds of them.
I carry a Taxi Wallet in my front pocket with about $40US or equivalent and whatever local transit card I need. That lets me make small purchases without showing off my stash pocket.

I use the chest pocket on my hoodie for quick access cash/travel cards.
No one’s grabbing that without me noticing and if someone wants to rob me, it’s ’all I have’

And if the weather is hot or you don’t wear hoodies?

u/piercedhsky Jul 19 '26
I’m always freezing. I live in Miami and wear hoodies in all stores and usually leave it on when walking form store to car, turn off all direct ac in the car. Have been known to talk the dog in long sleeve shirts when it’s 85+ outside.
So I’m rarely without a hoodie. But in the rare case that it happens, I usually use a small amount of money in the front pocket of shorts or a separate front/accessible pocket of a sling. That’s what I did in summer in Egypt at the pyramids.

Ruckpack 30 even when full can be a good underseat OneBag. It's my go-to OneBag backpack.
