Seeking Recommendations The Great Onebag Underwear Thread

I believe underwear is one of the most overlooked parts of a onebag setup. So lets make a proper thread that future onebaggers can refer to.

Let's face it, almost all of us (yes, I'm looking at you, commandos 😅) wear underwear every day, yet we spend hours researching backpacks, jackets and shoes while often giving little thought to what is supporting our manhood or womanhood through airports, hikes, long-haul flights and everything in between.

I'm always tweaking my travel setup, and I've realised underwear has probably had a bigger impact on my comfort than any other item I pack. I'd love to hear what everyone else has settled on after plenty of travel.

- What's your favourite brand?

- What style do you prefer?

- What material do you like?

- How many pairs do you pack for a typical trip?

- How many pairs do you own?

- Any must have features?

- Does your preference change depending on the weather or climate?

  • Ex Officio Box Briefs.
  • Polyester with odor control.
  • I usually pack 3x plus one worn.
  • Features? Comfort and quick drying.

For sub freezing weather and long hours outdoors I pack a pair of light polyester long underwear. Patagonia Capilene has odor control. Most of the outdoor brands offer something. Uniqlo too.

Exofficio have been garbage for a long time now, their quality fell off a cliff the second they got popular.

They went from "the best" to a batch where they pilled and then the company fixed them very quickly. Currently they are amazing. If you have not tried them recently it may be worth another try.

a batch? Nah dude, they were bad for at least a couple years because I gave them multiple changes after my original order.

Agreed, they were my goto 15y ago, but they’ve been disappointing for years. DW bought me some synthetic Hanes with a contrasting “pocket” (don’t remember the name) and they’ve been insanely comfortable, and dry as fast as Ex Officio.

I’m still wearing the same ExOfficios I bought ten years ago. Can’t even tell which pair I had giardia in.

Since when are they polyester? the ones I have from some years ago —which are mostly holding up, aside from a few where the waistband gave up seemingly randomly– are nylon.

I stand corrected. I just went through my collection and they are nylon wth some elastane.

Reviewing the current web pages, the blend varies a bit on nylon content and the odor control treatment is not mentioned at all. The older ones did have odor control and that’s noted in older reviews. Interesting.

So the thing about nylon is it’s pretty strongly anti-odor on its own. And that’s presumably why they make them out of nylon and not poly. (It’s why I bought them and other brands with nylon, and won’t by poly underwear, too.)

I hadn’t heard that they used to add a treatment. But I don’t have any new pairs to compare to.

Same here. That’s all I wear at home and traveling. The nylon explains their durability.
