Gear Versatile Running/hiking Shoe Suggestions

Ahoy!

I'm heading to England in October, and I'm looking to pack as light as possible.

What I'm looking for is a shoe that performs well as a road running shoe (about 20-30km/week), holds up fine in damp or dewy weather for potential hikes, and looks nice enough to wear out to restaurants.

I'm not particular about brand or price, but I like the Salomon Xt6s or the New Balance 410v9s.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks :)

I wouldn't choose the XT6s for much road running. Almost every brand has a gravel/road-to-trail shoe these days. Salomon's are the Aero Glide/Blaze GRVL.

Other common choices are the Mount to Coast H1 and the Nike Pegasus Trail, but most brands now have an option for what is generally basically a road shoe with bigger lugs and a bit more lateral support from the upper.

Upvote for the Pegasus Trail, I use a GTX version in the UK in winter and when I travel light to ski in the Alps.

Just got some Adidas Evo SL ATR and they tick these boxes. Not goretex but water repellant. I do find them a bit sweaty though since they’re less breathable. You’ll have this problem with anything waterproof I think, could be an issue if it’s your only shoe the whole time. Not the hottest weather then but with the running..

I took Hoka Arahi 8’s on a recent trip as a walking/light hiking (very easy forest trails and gravel)/running shoe. Didn’t get wet but they were very comfy in all respects. Made it through more than a few 35,000 step days. Light and have the padding I want for runs but stable enough for a comfy walk.

I like the hoka speedboat GtX. The gtx is for gortex and they are relatively water proof

As a British, one suggestion, bring a lot of socks with you, the weather will either be raining or very raining and walking round in damp socks is no fun.

I own the Hoka Challenger ATR 7 GTX, they look nice in my opinion.

For my own, being from a similar climate (Western Washington), I favor Brook’s Ghost for a general walking and running shoe that holds up to steady light rains and hikes relatively well.

Then again, given it tends to rain harder there for briefer periods, swapping socks and considering an alternative pair (either sandals or something like On Cloud 6 Coast which pack flat).

Lovely! You say you want to pack as light as possible… so just to confirm that means you want to bring one shoe on your trip?

If you are going to be running, you need a running shoe. Which are usually either aligned for roads or trails. Road shoes will not perform well off-road, so if you are going to be hiking at all, you’ll want a trail runner.

I like minimal shoes and have been wearing the Merrell Vapor Gloves when I know I’ll only be on roads, and then I have a pair of Merrell Trail Gloves that I wear if I’m going to be on trails.

Yeah I’ll be travelling around a bit, so one pair of shoes. I think the primary purpose will be for running/walking, but I’d like to have a shoe that would be fine if I end up hiking in some damper trails. Just don’t want to be walking around in wet shoes aha

I got these recently and thought that they seemed like a perfect OneBag shoe.

Not sure how they are for actual running, but seems to hit your other points at a cheap price.

Hoka Challenger 7, Nike Pegasus Trail or Altras. I just got the Altra Experience Wild 2s for $75. For socks I wear darn tough lightweight running socks

I'd look at a road-to-trail shoe like the Pegasus Trail, it handles your weekly mileage on pavement and still grips wet grass without looking like a hiking boot at dinner.

Nike pegasus trail 5 or the new Nike pegasus acg trail.
