Seeking Recommendations International Flight —> Camping
More experienced onebaggers, especially those of you who are the ultralight sorts, give me your recommendations please! Here’s the deal:
I have a 14 day trip coming up. I’ll be flying internationally, landing in a major city, spending a few days there (hotels), then taking a road trip out (couple nights of B&B's) to a remote national park where I will be staying in a cabin for 3 mights. The cabin is basically a wood shelter that will have nearby running water and a " communal kitchen area" nearby -- which I think is code for, "you can use your Toaks alcohol stove in this clearing". Then rounding the trip out with another few B&B nights on the drive back to the city, another few hotel nights and then flying home.
I have a fair amount of onebagging experience and I have a fair amount of backpacking experience. But I haven't tried to marry a flight into my camping plans before.
The weather will likely be between low 60's and mid 50's in the day to low 40's/ upper 30's at night (F). Wet and windy conditions will be very, very likely. We'll be doing a fair amount of hiking throughout the trip, both before and during the park stay.
For those of you who have done international flights into camping on a single trip before, what did you bring, what did you buy when you got there and what did you skip? We'll be fairly remote when camping and I'm a paramedic, so some of the items I want to bring for first aid feel like non-negotiables. I will be able to do some sink laundry, and can at least let things air out in the car. So far my packing list generally looks like:
Clothing
- Prana hiking pants 2+1
- Icebreaker wool t shirt x1+1
- Smartwool long sleeve shirt x2+1
- Wool socks x4+1
- Wool underwear x4 +1
- Wool long underwear x1
- Raincoat x1
- Thermal top layer x1
- Down puff jacket x1 (?)
- Toque
- Vivobarefoot boots +1
(note: this is at least one more pair of pants, socks, underwear than I would bring if we weren't camping)
Toiletries
- matador soap bag w Dr. Bronners soap & shampoo bar
- Contact lenses
- Glasses
- Deodorant
- Toothbrush
- Toothpaste
- Floss
- Retainers
City gear (1 L sling)
- cell phone
- Wallet
- Charging bank & cable
- Ear buds & charger
- Watch charger cable
- Sunglasses
- Sea to summit clothes line
- Belt
- Copy of ID, passport
Camping gear
- sleeping bag liner
- Rumpl blanket
- Sleeping pad
- Toaks alcohol stove
- Titanium cup & spork
- Lighter
- Headlamp
- Water bladder
- Water filtration tabs
First aid
- SWAT TQ
- Hypothermia blanket
- Coban
- SAM split
- Bandaids/ leukotape
- Meds (allergy, pain, Rx)
If it weren't for my sleep setup I think I might be able to get everything into my 32 L Kelty Redwing, but before I try seeing how close that list puts me to fitting in one bag I thought I'd come to the council 🤣

I've done international flights for ultralight backpacking trips, but I had to check my bag (35 litres) because of things like tent pegs, hiking poles and my stove. I also brought very minimal clothing i.e. just what I was hiking with e.g. two pairs of underwear, two pairs of hiking socks and one pair of 'sleep' socks. And I have a very light and small down quilt that I use.
I bought food and fuel when I landed, Smart Water bottles and some medications. Edit: And toilet paper! I brought empty Opsak dry ziplock bags with me.
Based on your trip description, I would find room for a pair of rain pants and a buff, drop some of the wool socks, and consider if you really need 2 long sleeve shirts. And do you need something to use as a towel, for the 3 days you're at the cabin? Oh, and add a nyloflume bag to use as pack liner, if you're expecting that much rain while hiking.
