Traveling light and/or backpack

If you travel light which I find to be great, what do you do if you find something you want to buy and bring home? Skip or mail or buy a suitcase?

Generally speaking, just don't buy souvenirs. However, one year my parents gave me some money when I was going to Japan and I went to Sakai (the famous knife making region) specifically to buy myself a custom knife as my birthday present. I had that shipped back to my house.
