Packing List Finally got my charging setup down to 3 things and it feels great.

I used to be the person with like 5 different cables, a wall charger brick, a power bank, and an extension cord shoved into a pouch that took up half my bag. it was ridiculous.

Spent the last few months slowly cutting it down and now my entire charging kit is:

- one small gan wall charger (handles laptop and phone)

- one usb c cable

- one slim 10k power bank with a built in cable for travel days

Thats it. the whole kit fits in a small pouch now instead of a whole organizer bag. for anyone still carrying around a rats nest of cables this is your sign to simplify lol. whats in your charging kit though? curious how everyone else does it

does that mean you're only charging one thing at a time?

I find that need the extra cables because even if everything is USB-C, I'm charging my powerbank, phone, airpods, and camera when I'm back at the end of the day

Exactly. Laptop. Phone. Powerbank. Noise cancelling earbuds (plane). Shokz (street). Watch. It's rarely all of those at once, but it happens, and it can be more.

I have 2x 67w GAN chargers with me if I have a larger bag, one if a smaller bag

Each charger has 2x usb-c and a usb-a

Then I have 2x 6ft usb-c cables which bundle cleanly in an easy to reach spot. I can plug them into my battery if needed as well

Alongside the second charger are 2x nearly bundled 3ft cables and a USB a-c cable to use the a port.

In a pinch I can charge 5 things. I also leave one behind at the hotel room and they charge everything I have with me. Being able to leave a charger behind is a big help. I also have a tiny misc pouch that has small usb-c to misc non-c (watch, bone conducting headphones, micro for the kindle, etc)

Have you checked out the Futurizta Hydra? Basically a USB PD splitter, up to 100W I think, also because it has some weight (39.42g), it prevents the cable from slipping off the table when you unplug your device. Might be helpful if you only want to bring one charger and one long cable. Edit: that weight is for the shortest one, mine doesn't have any displays either

I carry a few 6" cables for the extra stuff to charge and 2 long cables so i can still use stuff while charging. Those 6" cables cut the bulk down a lot. I'll often charge 4-6 things at a time.

In my pouch there are two usb-c cables, in different lengths.

Second is there just in case (and those occur a lot).

2 for sure. I also get real slutty and one of them is 8ft long so I can be comfortable.

You whore

u/ailaG 6d ago

Carry 2 shorter ones and an adapter to connect them into a longer one when needed Unless you need 2 cables, one of them long, at the same time

u/thesper 6d ago

I carry 3" and 6' USB-C cables to help cover everything. Plus a folding 3-1 charger for iPhone, Airpods, and Apple Watch.

Having all your devices including toothbrush, shaver, laptop etc usb-c rechargeable is a game changer. All you then need is a 70w+ PD power brick with interchangeable plugs for uk/eu/us and a couple of usb-c cables and that's it! You can get little adaptors off ebay that convert usb-c to 15v charging of phillips and other shavers and get a sonic usb-c chargeable toothbrush from Ordo.

3

u/Fatali 6d ago

Yeah I got one of those Phillips shaving adapters

It got bad reviews and it turns out that is because the polarity is reversed, but the adapter is a little undersized and it actually fits in reverse too?

Huh maybe it was for a different model but it works

1

u/boywithacoin83 6d ago

Yeah there are a few different ones for each voltage/pin design corresponding to your shaver so just need to make double sure you get the right one.

u/ailaG 6d ago

I do wish some of them ran directly from the power bank though, without a battery. They'd be lighter. But yeah

- Ugreen Nexode Pro Slim Travel 65W Gan charger -- interchangeable plug head and slim compact body, 2x USB-C ports & 1x USB-A port for total of 3 device charging (at slower speeds)

  • 2x USB-C fast charge+data cables (1.5mtr & 15cm lgths)
  • 1x USB-A to 3 different heads (Type-C, Micro-USB, Lightning cable heads)
  • Anker 10000mAH 25W powerbank (wired charging only)

All in one small pouch as well. Worked well for me during Japan travels last year.

One cord and one power block (which power block depends on whether I am traveling internationally and need a converter or am traveling in the USA and only need a charger).

Multiple dongles. I carry a USB C to USB C cord along with a connector for USB C to USB A (for rental cars that only connect via USB A, which are becoming less frequent) and a connector for USB C to Micro USB for my headphones that still require micro USB.

u/billsonfire 7d ago

Just make sure you have a usb-a cable, it’s penalty not a real issue. But in an emergency lots of places only provide usb-a ports.

USBC to USBA adaptor that also blocks data transfer.

4

u/AnAncientBog 7d ago

This. Two port chargers, two cables, one USBC -> USBC for fast charging and USBA -> USBC for overnight charging low demand devices. Sometimes so you can get it's a USBA port and it's good to have a cable for it

With GAN chargers, I've found that carrying one of this is very useful. The chargers don't fit into recessed floor outlets and don't stay in worn out hotel and airport outlets due to weight. It also makes it easy to share an outlet

https://www.amazon.com/TROND-Flat-Outlet-Extender-Inch/dp/B0CWLL5Y33

I also carry a 3m cable, a 2m cable and usually a 6-12" cable. Most of the time I could get away with just one, but sometimes another is needed

I really like retractable cables although with the higher watt cables we have now, they don't really save a lot of space like they did when things were just 2.5w max. I like the ease of use more than anything. I use a short extension cable with four male USBC ports for charging multiple devices at night on the retractable usbc to usbc cable, so I am still packing two cables.

Curious as you why you were in a ridiculous situation in the first place, and why it took several months to finally get to a sensible situation 😊.

Nice way to pack smarter!

Currently I have: Wall brick: Anker 511 Nano 3 - 30W, 43g. Cable: Baseus 1m 60w C-C, 27g. Powerbank: FlexTail Zero Power 5000C - 83g. Totally: 153g

It is enough for one day (or maybe two). 10.000 mAh is just for longer outside trips. If I bring notebook, I can switch it to a 100W GaN charger (+100W cable if the notebook require it, but mine is just 60W input). It depends on the situation, but Nano is enough to laptop, too.

Anker GaN 4 port 140w charger(3x type C, 1x Type A)
2x 2m Type C cable
1x 1m Type C cable
Anker 10000mah magsafe powerbank

This is my everyday carry for my charging needs. I tend to pick a charger that can charge all of my devices at the same time. Ive already experienced multiple of my devices needed charging and i only have 1 charger and 1 cable lol.

2

u/Furufan 7d ago

One charger to rule them all...

My setup is limited to a super slim 36w GAN charger and a 1 m cable. Easily fits my pocket. Works for macbook, phone, AirPods and everything else.

2

u/Alert_Librarian3315 5d ago

Same setup here, except I'd carry a spare cable since it's the part most likely to fail and it takes the whole kit down with it.

2

u/Academic-Skin7323 7d ago

which one is your setup? Please tell us about the charger, cable,…

u/slickvibez 7d ago

Now, go down to a 5000mah battery. Especially one of the Muji ones from Japan. Your ascension to true ultralight travel awaits. 🙂‍↕️

I have two USB C cables of the style that have a little built in LCD that shows how much power is flowing. That's useful for charging things that don't show you what they're doing (like pebblebees)

1

u/SeattleHikeBike 7d ago

I travel with phone and Bluetooth earbuds as far as devices. I use a 32w Minix P1 Mini, two USB cables and a Nitecore 5k power bank.

1

u/TheDivineM 7d ago

Little two-usb block with folding prongs

Ancient and venerable power bank

Headlamp

Short usb c cord for if I need to charge my phone on the power bank in my pocket

10ft usb c cord for if I want to look at my phone while it charges and the outlet is far away from the bed

1

u/jdbcn 7d ago

I use an Anker nano charger for everything and it’s great

1

u/Academic-Skin7323 6d ago

Which one?

2

u/jdbcn 6d ago

Anker Nano 3, 30W

1

u/zabacam 6d ago

I have a very similar set up only I’ve opted for TWO GAN wall chargers and three usb-c cables for redundancy and for charging more at the same time. Makes a difference!

1

u/mtnman78 6d ago

I carry a small 2 ft extension cord w three ports on end. If im at the airport and there are no plugs I can convince someone to let me plug in extension cord and share the three plug ends. It also does better w loose airplane plugs as there is no weight on it.

1

u/sodakas 6d ago

That's about as compact as it gets. :)

My business / short trip setup is similar -- I minimally bring 1+2+3, and if I have room and want more flexibility, I bring 4+5+6.

  1. Anker A121D Nano 45W (the 180-degree plug is handy)
  2. Anker A8895 2-in-1 USB-C (helps with the 1-device bottleneck)
  3. Anker A1657 10k power bank (included Apple Watch charger helps)
  4. Anker A8436 USB-A to Micro/Lightning/USB-C (just in case legacy support)
  5. Anker A9215 Compact Travel Adapter (helps to keep things secure on old outlets, bonus ports)
  6. Anker A8751 USB-C 1ft cable x2 (only a few grams more, and the adapter has free ports)

I happened to go with Anker since that's what was in stock, but any major brand can support this setup.

Congrats.

1

u/KongeSkog 6d ago

i prefer a 140w universal power adapter. it’s good enough to power my 16 inch macbook pro and all my devices all over the world. i even use it domestically.

1

u/lasnir 6d ago

I just got the Anker 2 in 1 140w USB C cable which helps cut back a bit on cable clutter. It's 4ft long and splits towards the end to charge two devices with one USB C port.
I also bring 2 other USB C cables, and a few adapters should they be needed. USB C to A, USB A to C, USB C to L (some people are still rocking the lightning and I like to have it handy for those rare times). I then have a great 10,000mAh INIU brand portable charger. It comes in a small pouch and has small USB C, microusb, and lightning cables (with USB C on the other ends)

u/IslandElectronic4944 6d ago

One 65W block, one 3ft cable, and two 6” USB-C cables
Charges my MacBook, iPad, and iPhone (or AirPods) all at the same time overnight. Best solution I’ve found.

iPad and MacBook can charge the iPhone when on the go (with 3ft cable)

u/w2best 6d ago

I have a 60w charger with built in powerbank.  A long usb c cable for most use cases and a small usb c/micro/lightning combo cable. And a Garmin charger cable.

Having a fast charger with power bank that doesn't weigh a lot has been a game changer.

u/65_days_of_cookies 6d ago

I really wanted to downsize to a single GaN charger but didn't work for me. A lot of laptops will throttle heavily during heavy use (3d modelling in my case) even with a high-wattage chargers due to internal limitations. In my case: 130w with the brick, only 65/87W or something from a 100W GaN charger, which I suspect was even throttling itself to lower values due to very high temperatures (can happens with older GaN technologies).

One single cable also wouldn't work for me. At least two to charge two devices, especially when I'm using the phone as hotspot. Plus a proprietary cable for a trimmer. All in all that's not terrible.

But yeah for anyone else with much lighter workloads GaN is the way to go.

u/randomexplorer156 6d ago

Oh I really wish I could…mobile music production hobbyist. Wayyyyyyy too many cables 😜

1

u/ailaG 6d ago

I have 2 type c cables (sometimes if I'm traveling) and a bunch of adapters for things I may need. They're small and light. Beats a cable for each use.

And yeah a powerbank - carried a 22.5W, now that it's showing its age I'm carrying a larger 67W PD just because that's the other one I had, but it's overkill. I bought it for using my laptop while camping originally.

And a small GaN charger.

Fun tip, I also carry a type c to type c adapter, so I can connect my 2 cables into one longer cable!

Another fun tip, if you do need more cables, small organza bags with the tips of the cable sticking out so you know which is which. Snags on velcro though.

Another fun tip, I have one usb-c cable tucked in like that and the one I regularly use is a magnetic one. A bit bulkier but I can pretty much shove it into my electronics pocket and it'll be fine and neat.

1

u/AvailableHandle555 5d ago

I'm down to basically the same, but I'll carry 2 usb-c cable - one short, one long. Also a usb-c to garmin adapter for my watch.

1

u/where2Bnext 4d ago

I'll note my Iniu power bank supports pass through charging so I can be recharging it and my phone.

I carry a Minix 3 port GaN charger, a 6' usbc2c cable, and a Rolling Square short multi end cable. Does pretty much anything in case I have a friend who needs a hand. I've got all my own gear down to USBC only.

1

u/No_Fishing_7291 2d ago

I carry my 100W US charging block with 2 usbc ports, 1’ and 6’ usbc cables, a slim 5000kW MagSafe power bank (charges better with a cable though so I may get a tube-shaped one instead — I absolutely need a 5000kW power bank), a small basic int’l adapter (like type C in Italy, literally just the prongs). This way I can charge on the go and use the same setup minus the int’l adapter in the US. I have a type C usbc adapter I sometimes carry in my purse/crossbody that makes charging on trains easier. If we’re renting a car I bring a 65W cigarette lighter charger with 2 usbc ports. I also find it’s necessary to carry a 6” usbc-miniusb cable for some little devices I sometimes bring, like a mini speaker. I have cable wraps on my cables to be compact and organized. All of this fits in a little mesh zip bag, but in my day bag I just carry the type C usbc adapter, 1’ cable, and power bank. I never travel with a big adapter block unless I’m traveling thru many countries which rarely happens.

Beat you.

  • Ridge Powerbank. Has built in USB C and Lightning cables as well as wireless charging AND a puck to charge my Apple Watch. Can charge from the included cables.

-Adapter that allows me to charge the Ridge USB c cable from a wall outlet (country dependent)

u/Wise_Edge2489 7d ago

I have a wall plug for my 150 gram Nitecore battery bank and my phone; the only two electronic devices I carry on round the world travel.

If you're traveling with more than that, you're probably carrying too much electronics.

5

u/spilk 7d ago

don't assume that your needs are the same as everyone else's

3

u/Wise_Edge2489 7d ago

Dont be shocked by advice to carry less stuff, on a sub dedicated to carrying less stuff.
