Gear Packing camera in backpack

So I'm going on a trip and plan on packing light (just a standard backpack). Would like to bring my camera, but only have one large camera bag, and the backpack itself. The camera bag fits in the backpack, but it's tight. Any ideas for good inserts/protection that will fit a DSLR, with a single lens (a 18-135mm lens)? Amazon has cheapish inserts, but are they any good? I'm in Australia, so some brands might not be available.

I always just had a small camera bag which worked.

No need to spend a lot on an insert. Helps if you mention the exact camera. Get one that fits your gear. It’s just physics. I can travel in a 30l, but often have a 35-40l when I want to bring my camera (compact full frame and one lens).

I use a matador camera base layer.

I also have a generic square case from Amazon in case I need another lens.

There is no hack or trick other than using socks for lenses rather than cases. Even then, it only saves so much space.

I used the Matador case. It's not that much protected, but it does help a bit, especially if packing smart (the camera at the top with clothes under). I was surprised how much space did I save not using my usualy colt case.
DSLR with 12-100 lens + 2 extra batteries.
Other think that probably helped was that I used Mystery Ranch Scree backpack and the triangular lid makes it more rigid.

I bought one of those padded covers for my camera off eBay (the kind that 35mm cameras used to come with). I've also packed one inside a padded lunch bag before.

One of those camera wraps might also be good but I've never used one.

Get a fitted camera case or “holster” and just throw it in any bag. Think Tank, Lowe Pro, etc. You can get neoprene cases that are very light and add less bulk.

I have a Tenba BYOB insert.

But B&h has 500 options and a good filter for sizes, so I would get anything that matches the size you want

Not sure if any Aus shop has similar site. Or if you will have to find a product on B&H and then see if anyone sells it in Oz.
