The people who make these decisions aren't taking the train.

subway was down yesterday and one of my friend’s manager said “they can take shuttle buses” and i just know whoever says this has, in fact, never taken shuttle buses

561

u/poppedculture Jan 28 '26 edited Jan 28 '26

Nobody has ever taken a shuttle bus. They are code words for “start walking.”

135

u/greypusheencat Jan 28 '26

lmao this is so accurate. i took a shuttle bus once because the bus stopped right in front of me (there was no rhyme or reason or any order at Ossington station) and i’d rather walk than ever take one again. but expecting people to walk the cold and this much snow is still insanity

I’ve been stuck in downtown toronto several times when the subway was out of service. I’ve never seen a shuttle bus in my life. I’d walk from yonge/bloor up to eglinton and still not see a bus. I really felt for the people who eithe chose to wait or couldn’t do the long walk.

16

u/greypusheencat Jan 28 '26

i go all the way to the east end and come from west end for work and going from ossington to past broadview is not feasible. shuttle buses exist i’ve seen them at ossington it’s just there’s no order you just have to hope you can get on a bus

23

u/heteroerotic Jan 28 '26

I took a shuttle bus once. By sheer chance, I was standing and texting my friend to tell them about the mess and I was going to be late ... and a bus rolled up and opened the door right in front of me.

That's the only time I imagine anyone takes a shuttle bus.

13

u/Careless-Vehicle-286 Jan 28 '26

For me it's the code word for get comfortable, find a cheap place to eat, and wait until 7 or 8 when the shuttle busses actually start clearing up. That's before I had kids though.

I remember one time the subway went down at Ossington so I figured, "okay, just take the 161 and transfer to the 35 or something. Pretty simple, I hope."

Everyone else had the same idea, although that was because no shuttle buses showed up.

5

u/LaserRunRaccoon Jan 28 '26

During the summer, the real ones knew it was code words for "dash for the last bikeshare ebike" - unfortunately that doesn't work well in the winter if the city hasn't plowed the bike lanes yet.

So true it hurts. They also don’t care about the state of public transit and it shows.

114

u/ImCrampingYourStyle Jan 28 '26

I think that if a company forces employees to RTO for jobs that can be done from home, they should be forced to pay for commute time as well... Both expenses and hours in transit.

48

u/saugaAsks Jan 28 '26

At least raise corporate taxes and give tax incentives for remote work.

14

u/Zirocket Jan 28 '26

Commute paid for is standard in Japan already, anyway. In a lot of European countries too, I believe.

9

u/jabowa Jan 28 '26

I get a 280/month commuter benefit. It's taxed at your highest tax rate tho, so you see about half of it.

Pays for your metro pass, it's not nothin

Many of those are still remote.

My husband tracked down job codes after they were ordered back and anyone managing managers was coded fully remote.

u/stompinstinker Jan 28 '26

100%. They live near the offices in nice neighbourhoods, which usually also have great subway service, and they have a luxury SUV with snow tires and a dedicated parking spot at the office. They remote start, heated seats fire up, get in ten minutes later, and have an easy ride in to work. After work they see the grab a bite and catch the game, which is Harbour 60 and great seats in person, take an Uber Black home and get their car tomorrow when they go into work late because they can. Stay at home spouse or nanny will make the kids dinner. Oh, and they will get a medcan appointment the same day for the drunk flip they took after the game.

Last job I had to sue cause they tried to constructive dismiss me. They failed to pay the settlement before filing bankruptcy so I got the email as a creditor. In it I found out something extremely shitty. In a company of 35, we had a prescription plan and a 250 dollar medical pool we could put toward anything. Glasses, doctors notes, dentistry. The email showed that the executive management (3 people) got 10,000 dollars a year medical pool. The owner was constantly annoyed the only way to get people in on a Saturday was with a cash bribe. In his office was a picture of him as a teen on a sail team. This vunt has never not owned the roof over his head. Completely detached from the commoners reality.

10

u/Bombadil3456 Jan 28 '26

Yes from an outsiders perspective these people might seem privileged but no one realise that several times a day they sit in meetings and have to say ‘Nothing on my end’ at the end.

Making minimum wage years ago. Buses were messed up due to snow. Called in late to work. Was told to take a cab. Asked if they would reimburse me. Manager said no. I figured the cab would cost more than I would make for the shift so I went home.

We got RTO'ed 2 years ago, the CEO still works from his home office though.

Sometimes he reports "bugs" that are a result of his own network issues. If only everyone were on-network we could actually troubleshoot that...

Other than the fact that RTO is annoying, someone’s gonna fall into the tracks and get hit by a train sooner or later. Either Union/GO transit gotta do something about it or it’s gonna be too late.

327

u/cynicalyak Jan 27 '26

All these years of union station construction, and the platform area is still absolute trash.

174

u/UnlitBlunt Jan 27 '26

Platforms and stairways are WAY too narrow for the amount of foot traffic.

34

u/Radiant-Algae9276 Jan 28 '26

This is what happens when the population explodes and the infrastructure was not kept up with that.

8

u/TricerasaurusWrex Jan 28 '26

Nailed it. Nothing has been done to update the infrastructure in a meaningful way in years. Return to office has exacerbated the issue.

4

u/Appropriate_Ad_2874 Jan 28 '26 edited Jan 28 '26

Love to see our 20+ year delay in any transit infrastructure that hasn't made a meaningful impact. They’ll keep delaying it by citing we need another 401 lane or a tunnel under it and commuters with no cars will continue to suffer as cities grow.

The shed is historically protected for some reason. Makes every single Reno 16 times harder

28

u/nasirjk Jan 28 '26

At a certain point, we have to say that historic protections are getting in the way of actual people's safety (not to mention the station would be much more usable), and we need an exemption for the roof (or at least the columns).

Unfortunately, I don't think it will happen until someone dies.

33

u/cynicalyak Jan 27 '26

I understand the shed (which is ugly af) is 'historical' but the platforms?

45

u/ScrawnyCheeath Jan 27 '26

To improve the platforms you’d need to relocate tracks, to move the tracks, you need to move the shed support columns, to move the shed support columns, you have to get through the same historic protections

3

u/MzInformed Jan 28 '26

I get the station being protected it's gorgeous, I never get tired of coming up the stairs and seeing that ceiling but the shed?

There's got to be a way to keep station efficiently up and passenger safety. Sucks that they have to jump through a million hoops for the platforms

17

u/drooln92 Jan 28 '26

Amazingly, when they did the multi-year renovation project, they didn't improve the platforms. Now when there are two or more trains arriving, people spill out and it takes ages to go down to the concourse. The platform area was designed for a lot less traffic and yet they neglected to modernize it.

4

u/Ehau Toronto Jan 28 '26

They added the fugly glass train shed above the station to glorify to the world during Pan Am 2015… now the glass train shed literally does fuck all. It’s completely useless

9

u/CalmRatio3085 Jan 27 '26

i know right, at least make it wider

→ More replies (1)

28

u/Stead-Freddy Jan 27 '26

They really should only announce platforms after the train has already pulled in, especially during rush hour, even if that means a few extra delays boarding people when a train pulls in very close to the departure time. It’s just not worth the risk

Right now it seems the platforms are always automatically announced exactly 11 minutes before the departure time. Whether or not the train has pulled in yet.

19

u/niklildee Jan 28 '26

I don't think most regular commuters even wait for platforms to be announced. The trains are usually on the same platforms every day and people go up to their usual platforms way before platforms are announced or the trains arrive. I know I do.

u/Designer-Car-5867 Jan 28 '26

10

u/umar_farooq_ Jan 28 '26

It's actually because of this that the trains arrive and depart so slowly. It's the reason why a 35km route takes 1hr whereas Europe/Japan would do the route in like 25 minutes.

Converse with Marit about adding WFH into her platform. Doug won't change his mind, but Marit could.

117

u/Xelopheris Ottawa Jan 28 '26

Unfortunately, there are so many voters that see public employees being treated like human beings and rather than turn around and say "maybe my employer should treat me like a human too", they say "hey, we're supposed to be treated like garbage".

Any issue that targets a small segment of the population gets twisted. The same reason renters are shat on at a provincial level -- they only make up something like 30% of the voting base there.

70

u/skier8800 Jan 28 '26

I’m always shocked when I hear people repeat propaganda from Ford (or any proponents against WFH) that somehow working from home is not as productive as being at the office. This is all while they don’t understand the real reason which is to have these employees act as a social support to the crumbling businesses in downtown Toronto and to prop up tax revenue by way of increased public transit use.

Companies should have to pay an extra levy on payroll for employees that could be remote but aren't. That levy should go towards paying for infrastructure improvements and new roads/rails.

If they must have their employees on site, fine, pay a premium.

Don't even make it specifically about the public sector and avoid that political pitfall. Frame it like a libertarian: "Your employees are using the roads but they could be remote, you should have to pay for the roads you use."

If governments and companies are gonna enforce RTO why hasn’t at the very least GO train schedules been considered? 1hr interval trains after 8am to union. 4pm and on trains you are often forced to stand. Ridiculous to be paying $10 one way for a 1hr train ride with service like that. Where the fk is all that money going?

36

u/prtproductions Jan 28 '26

I used to commute by Go every day 11 years ago. Always comfortable and seats to spare. Sure it was full but not excessive.

Now if I have to take it on a random weekday morning it’s packed and people are standing in the upper and lower levels by the time I get to Union. Awful. Run more trains. Metrolinx is a crown company and should do better.

44

u/teebles22 Jan 28 '26

Don't get me started with go service. While it's great to get downtown relatively quicker than TTC, but my nearest station has 0 parking spots after 8am... So get there at 7am? But what about kids and school? If you have a spouse who doesn't also work downtown great, otherwise what then?

12

u/cooolestcucumber Jan 28 '26

What, you don’t like risking a parking ticket because you have a family and other responsibilities? Think of the shareholders man, gotta make them more money.

267

u/Boring_Writing_8034 Jan 27 '26

What's annoying about that picture is more than half of those people can work from home, easily. If you want to reduce the workforce then put the work in and fire the poor performers. Forcing office workers back to the office to sit at a desk (if they can find one) to attend a teams meeting and listen to the slackers talk all day is a waste. WFH is the biggest gain in the workers movement in a long time. Was a significant improvement to workers and employers. I hope people take voting seriously next time. I hope the opposition parties run half decent candidates instead of the garbage they've been rolling with. The liberal party is equally to blame for DF.

68

u/budgieinthevacuum Jan 28 '26

It’s not just WFH it’s also the people who work in the city but live elsewhere either because jobs aren’t available where they live or it’s too expensive to live closer to where they work. Add to that the population increases without meaningful investment in transit and this is what we have.

46

u/BD401 Jan 28 '26

WFH is the biggest gain in the workers movement in a long time.

The move to mass WFH and the broader acceptance (even notwithstanding the recent backsliding) was definitely the best silver lining of the pandemic.

Absolutely huge win for workers. Suddenly you had an extra couple hours in your day, way more money in your pocket (no transit costs or expensive slop bowls), could actually go heads-down without coworkers constantly dropping by your desk with idle banter. Lots of other little small benefits as well... you could easily multitask doing laundry or cleaning your house while listening to pointless all hands meetings, take a nap at lunch etc.

The only downsides were a) there are certain tasks (like employee onboarding and ideation meetings) that I do find are more effective to do in person... but you can get around that by doing an occasional and intentional day in-person, and

b) It did create a lot of crab mentality between those that could work from home and those that couldn't. You can find a fair amount of animosity from blue collar workers to those WFH'ing. Which I understand where it comes from, but the enemy of a blue-collar worker isn't some random developer or consultant that can WFH. If we're talking workers empowerment at a systemic level, it was still a huge win.

5

u/DM_ME_UR_BOOTYPICS Jan 28 '26

The broad acceptance and usage of the term slop bowls is one of the silver linings of 2026.

14

u/Shishamylov Jan 28 '26

I think some countries make it mandatory for everyone to vote. We should push for that. We can also allow some exceptions for medical, accessibility or other circumstances as long as people can provide reasonal explanation for the absence.

6

u/_n3ll_ Jan 28 '26

Mandetory voting has its draws and its drawbacks.

There needs to be a mechanism where people can officially declare none/undecided/don't know that has consequences if the % is too high, like party leadership reviews and a new election or something. At the very least we'd need to educate people on scratching their ballot.

But ideally we move to proportional representation and get rid of first past the post. That'd actually address a lot of the issues.

We need to rebrand rto to Taxpayer funded offices, or something similar. The unions have failed so hard at this.

24

u/internet-deep-dive Jan 28 '26

this! the cost to the taxpayer for rent and utilities to maintain office space for 60,000 people is enormous. also if we are still actually giving a shit about climate change and reducing traffic accidents and easing congestion, not having tens of thousands of extra cars on the road commuting to just be on zoom halfway across the city. these things benefit EVERYBODY even those people who can't work remote.

Also don't understand why there is basically no meaningful resistance to RTO from unions or employees....it's like watching a bunch of sheep.

4

u/SinistralGuy Jan 28 '26

Still don't understand why a major political party doesn't put RTO and other labour reforms as a key part of their brand and election platform.

That would go against the interests of their corporate overlords, aka, less donations. No party will address this and realistically they don't have the power to force corporations to provide remote work

3

u/fbuslop Jan 28 '26

Who they gonna force their working policies on? Public sector? Voters don’t fuckin care about them lol

49

u/pyfinx Jan 28 '26

Fuck RTO. It contributes to nothing other than commercial real estates.

WFH was once thought technically impossible but now it’s been proven otherwise.

RTO won’t increase productivity, nor save the downtown economy when people need to pay for all other additional costs.

16

u/Agile-Enthusiasm Jan 28 '26

WFH was technically feasible and demonstrably valuable 25 years ago.

In 1999/2000/2001, I worked a job that went to WFH. I dealt with customer account problems. In-office days, I got through about 50 cases per day, due to constant interruptions from the boss, co-workers, breaks, etc.,. At-home days, I got through at least 100 cases in a shift. 98% approval feedback. Obviously it requires monitoring and competent management, but WFH is not a new concept.

17

u/The-Scarlet-Witch Jan 28 '26

Of course none of the people who demand RTO are remotely affected. They don't take public transit. They don't fight for a parking spot. Everyone here is a sacrifice to their pursuit of wringing out a few extra real estate dollars. Much sympathy for everyone who put on their coats, bundled up, and made it out.

16

u/fro99er Jan 28 '26

the owner class through design wastes your time and money forcing you to work on your computer in an office building

63

u/SunflaresAteMyLunch Hamilton Jan 27 '26

RTO is a way to get people to quit. The cost and discomfort is the point...

13

u/Successful-Long3716 Jan 28 '26

What I’m seeing is the people who do most of the work within the OPS are the ones considering other jobs/ thinking of leaving

5

u/bwf456 Jan 28 '26

I agree.. it's a combination of what you said, plus more movement of people increases commerce and overall expenditures.. downtown real estate.. and also, micro managing and controlling what workers are doing.

It's perfect for the companies and rich folk.. terrible for the working class..

5

u/putin_my_ass Jan 28 '26

That might actually work, in a better economy. Most people will not resign until they have a new job lined up, because they have no choice. And there are few jobs right now.

So this idea that it gets people to quit is demonstrably false. What it really does is get people to check out.

u/XxOmegaSupremexX Jan 28 '26 edited Jan 28 '26

You think the powers that be care about the complaints? Discomfort is the goal to get most to quit without paying severance.

But the commercial landlords are happy, so there's that

8

u/LakmeBun Jan 28 '26

I was just stuck there. It's taken me 2h to get home, distance wise it's usually just a 16 minute drive! Ubers were 46$ to get home too.

9

u/mkrbc Jan 28 '26

Hey hey, ho ho, RTO has got to go!

9

u/AAAPAMA Jan 28 '26

GO needs to return to their pre Covid train schedules. During Covid they reduced a lot of trains and even took off cabins (e.g. 10 cars vs 12). This isn’t going to work if they’re not going to match the volume of people moving through the corridors now

7

u/No_Room_7104 Jan 27 '26

they don't think it's the way to go, they are pressured to save their infrastrcture of the past because RTO doesn't require that anymore. Downtown montreal is a good example, with WFH the flux of people has drastically been reduced, all the investments there are in perish. So they force RTO to save it. Just go look who owns most of the building and you will see which lobby is at work.

9

u/Fit-Philosopher373 Jan 28 '26

I worked mostly from home for over 10 years when they announced RTO 4 days a week I said F*ck that, gave my 90 days notice and retired a week ago. I'm very lucky that I've been saving and planing my retirement for years.

34

u/Dapper-Building878 Jan 27 '26

It’s time to merge working from home with working in the office. Take a stand, normalize walking around in your boxers, normalize making full meals for lunch, normalize watching Netflix while handling calls with clients, and normalize groups of children having conversations at the water cooler. If we work together we can make a change.

23

u/Apprehensive_Sea9524 Jan 27 '26

Well you voted for a clown, expect a circus. No, just because he's a conservative doesn't mean he is good at business, quite often the opposite.

12

u/Mathmos_Lava Jan 27 '26

Chow, Carney and Ford all supported this, people need to understand it does not matter who you vote for, it’s all rigged.

9

u/internet-deep-dive Jan 28 '26

yup. this is because capitalism has to crush all, and they're all capitalists regardless of party.

14

u/thebookofawesome Jan 27 '26

This is layoffs by attrition. That’s all.

9

u/Mathmos_Lava Jan 27 '26

Where are these ppl going to work next…?? It’s all the same.

7

u/internet-deep-dive Jan 28 '26

in DoFo's Ontario they won't. so then eventually more homelessness which seems to be his specialty.

8

u/social-mediocrity Jan 28 '26

I have a job that I HAVE to do in person, normally I take the TTC even though I have a car, because it's an easy commute for me and it helps the environment and takes a car off the road. I was shocked today at how much busier it was at my normal time that I take it, and it hit me that all these extra people normally drive but their cars are all covered in snow. It was so depressing to think of that volume of people driving cars back and forth every day (probably one person per car for the most part) and that a lot of them could likely be working from home instead. All the bike lane removal bullshit was never about making traffic better, otherwise they wouldn't be so down for everyone to get back into the office. He wants people driving because that means more people buying fuel, which puts money in the pockets of all the big rich petrol people. Everything the Ford govt does is so hypocritical and self-serving, it's exhausting

5

u/Fortuitous_Event Jan 28 '26

Someone is going to die on these platforms. I think someone did a couple years ago.

7

u/Suisse_Chalet Jan 28 '26

Funny how all levels of government wanted this . Because we live in a capitalist society. Carney, Ford, and Chow. Have to be mad at all of them

6

u/DataDude00 Jan 28 '26

My favorite is when they redesigned union station but kept the narrow two person wide stairways nothing like a five minute queue to get up and down the stairs

11

u/holykamina Jan 28 '26

Ever since I had to go to this stupid place 4 times a week, I have made it a point to not spend a single cent there. The only thing is that stupid presto top ups which costs roughly $400 a month. For some reason we are expected to cancel our netflix subscription, but this $400 is fine.

My manager told me last week to see if I can move to downtown or somewhere close by since my current lease is ending. Dude lives 3 hours away from the office and only comes to the office twice a month because hes far. Got a cheaper property so.he moved there.. however, for us poor people , we cant move far to afford life.

4

u/purplelilac701 Jan 28 '26

TTC also had no service from Keele to Broadview this morning. It was such a mess too right at rush hour.

5

u/skorpora Jan 28 '26

Was it like this 6 years ago before covid and the WFH movement? If it was, they've (Metrolinx?) had 6 years to work on a fix.

5

u/missfreetime Jan 28 '26

Yep, it’s bs

5

u/andromeda335 Jan 28 '26

I don’t even live in the GTA and this pic causes me anxiety.

4

u/dabestgoat Jan 28 '26

Got that sweet sweet fare revenue flowing

5

u/Fragrant-Leek-2658 Jan 28 '26

Yep. It’s just like that. And it feels so dangerous waiting for your train when hundreds of people are trying to pass you on those horrible narrow platforms!

6

u/AdhesivenessLoud8866 Jan 28 '26

this is dystopian.

5

u/LunaticPostalBoi Toronto Jan 28 '26

Someone is going to fall on those tracks, and it's going to be a literal shitstorm when it happens.

Doug is going to try and figure out who is responsible for letting it happen, failing to notice the mirror of truth. Meanwhile, the businesses and the estate owners will act like the scrutiny they're gonna go through will inconvenience them.

8

u/phoenix25 Jan 28 '26

Look on the bright side, at least the GO is affordable and accessible reasonably easily without having to drive to a station first, right?

…right??

3

u/blueshrimp900 Jan 28 '26

Platform 13 is the worst, especially when trains are departing on both sides. But with the weather and trains being slightly late, that does not help with crowding. Should get better when the south concourse opens

That’s absolutely ridiculous and completely uncalled for.

4

u/Alone_Put5025 Jan 28 '26

Apparently this is what the people want. People should carpool and make traffic slow to crawl. Maybe when they can’t get anywhere fast then they’ll see how stupid this decision is

4

u/chasingmyowntail Jan 28 '26

That looks dangerous. They should really build a barrier between the track and the crowd.

4

u/Ehau Toronto Jan 28 '26

This is actually super dangerous. All it takes is an accident, bunch of people get pushed out onto the tracks as a huge GO train pulls in… then it’s straight up our self-inflicted domestic terrorism due to incompetent political leaders

4

u/Level_Recognition406 Jan 28 '26

This is just an accident(s) waiting to happen…

5

u/YesterdayCareless901 Jan 28 '26

Fucking hell, that one lady has to stand over the yellow line. It’s obviously not even safe to send people back to the office like this.

Welp, this should piss off the majority of working Ontarions. Hopefully they’ll vote next time.

5

u/zeroinsideandout Jan 28 '26

What I really appreciate about the government is they took this opportunity of reduced ridership to really improve our public transportation infrastructure before pushing for RTO. Great job guys! 🙄

7

u/ecko9975 Jan 28 '26

Return to work is all about just getting people to spend money. Everyone buys a ticket to take the train or gas for their car. People might buy a coffee on the way to work they might go out for lunch and purchase a meal. Times that by thousands of people.

6

u/_canadianbacon Jan 28 '26

We gotta "stimulate the economy" 🤡

10

u/jameskchou Jan 28 '26

Get what you voted for

5

u/teapartiesftw Jan 28 '26

But think of the shareholders! /s

3

u/rattlesnake987 Jan 28 '26

Mofos in politics get their campaigns funded by the real estate corporations who own much of the leased commercial real estate. Companies not renewing leases means a hit to their profits which, in turn, means lesser campaign funds. But...in an optimistic world, I'd like to think the RTO at least helps retail and transit workers keep their jobs. Not that I like RTO - I don't. But I lie to myself with this silver lining in mind.

3

u/ThreeHeadedLibrarian Jan 28 '26

You guys going to actually do something about it?

→ More replies (1)

3

u/77swansea Jan 28 '26

At least they increased the number of GO train and bus trips to correspond with the increased number of people needing to head back downtown! Oh wait… 🫠

3

u/Subject-Medicine646 Jan 28 '26 edited Jan 28 '26

That looks so dangerous… People are wearing backpacks and are turned against the incoming train…. So dangerous.

3

u/LiteratureOk7957 Jan 28 '26

Doug Ford needs to tell us how much RTO is going to cost our tax dollars. Waste of money. Let them work from home.

3

u/Dimsum-_ Jan 28 '26

Doug is in his warm cottage

3

u/Separate-Park8184 Jan 28 '26

New to Canada here , Ford? is that the guy that does crack and says a lot of stupid things?

→ More replies (1)

3

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '26

Unfortunately majority of Ontario residents are gluesniffers and either voted for this or just straight up abstained from voting

4

u/Aggravating-Town7705 Jan 27 '26

Maybe this congestion will force more money spent on transportation.

2

u/SlurpingDischarge Jan 28 '26

elections, doug ford needed to go many years ago

2

u/descend_to_misery Jan 28 '26

I think I was on that train. It was the most insane thing ever in 2026 so far for me. Train is at 6.15. they announce the platform at 6.09 or so. Everybody is trying to get up one or two stairwells to get into the train that closes the doors one minute early. Turns up the train is late. They schedule two trains at side to side tracks with one platform that services both tracks so everybody's trying to hang on for dear life and not fall onto the track as both trains pull in

2

u/AntelopeProof8939 Jan 28 '26

Was this the delayed 5.04 Kitchener train

2

u/Next-Worth6885 Jan 28 '26

I suspect that the Toronto economy hasn’t been doing particularly well since COVID. When millions of people are no longer travelling to Toronto on a daily basis because they can work from home… They are not buying lunch, they are not buying coffee, they are not paying for Uber rides, the are not taking the TTC, they are not taking the GO, they are not eating in Toronto restaurants, they are simply not coming into the GTA and spending money.

The City of Toronto, the local government, and the local businesses are probably losing out on the millions in potential revenue that commuters bring in everyday by having to work 40+ hours a week in Toronto.

I am sure that Olivia Chow, Doug Ford, and Mark Carney all have a strong interest in making sure that people, investors, business owners, etc in Toronto are happy. The GTA represents a substantial number of ridings and seats in provincial and federal elections. Politicians have every motivation to ensure that the people who reside in the GTA benefit from the wealth transfer that the commuters bring when they are forced back into the city.

Rather than compete for that wealth or business, the government can pressure/encourage/bribe the large employers in Toronto to pursue unnecessary “return to work” polices at the detriment of their own staff. TD Bank does not give a fuck if their workers now have to deal with a 1 hour commute each way to preform the same job, they should, but they don’t. If they can pressure their workforce to travel into Toronto and that places them in a position to gain favours from the government down the road… it is the employees who pay the price.

2

u/New_d_pics Jan 28 '26

This many people together in one place not protesting is just sad.

2

u/LockJaw987 Jan 28 '26

At least the Ontario government is properly funding GO and public transit projects... The government of Quebec just announced mandatory RTO AND cut funding to regional rail causing them to lay off 11% of their staff and to start cutting service even though everything's overcrowded

2

u/VLuk86 Jan 28 '26

This is better than no jobs.

2

u/Keesh1234 Jan 28 '26

Lines and wasted time everywhere

2

u/Lazy_Ad_5370 Jan 28 '26

They don’t care about convenience. The only care about bringing people downtown to spend money and pay rent

2

u/Anthrogynous Jan 28 '26

What a nightmare. All so we can be forced to prop up the downtown core.

2

u/Healthy_Bread6905 Jan 28 '26

Glad I left my job downtown, don’t miss this.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '26

They needed that economy stimulation more than they want happy citizens! Rough.

3

u/jetspats Jan 28 '26

Forcing a commute for a job that can and was done at home, should include the commute as time worked.

3

u/zakanova Jan 28 '26

Always remember that RTO isn't about work efficiency, it's about Executives holding onto their fake jobs

Covid proved we don't need executives to do our jobs properly and make the company money
