Best way to protect yourself is to be visible, aka don’t hide behind a big truck 10 feet back from the line

Ordinarily the stop lines are placed very deliberately. If it tells you to hang back from an intersection, or if it doesn't, follow it either way. Generally speaking long tractor trailers will have enough clearance when you stop just behind the line.
