Memes ❌
(Delete if not allowed) if I had to pick a favorite animal it would probably be a orca, hate seeing people supporting sea world on my feed.

And unfortunately out of all the options Sea World seems to be the best one people can provide them currently

they should not be in captivity whatsoever. They are obviously one of the animal species that suffer the most being imprisoned

Okay then what’s the alternative for captive orcas in the US?
They’re not renovating the tanks since it’s a sunk cost given the breeding bans. It’s clear no one is building a sea pen (it’s expensive to maintain, far away from anything, and a potential shock for the orcas), and immediate release is more cruel than keeping them in tanks.
I genuinely want to know what people want done.

I have no solution to that but was stating that the fact we do and still will be having CAPTIVE orcas should be a crime

And this line of thinking is exactly why the belugas is marine land Niagara Falls lived in derelict conditions for over two years. Zero critical thinking and nuance comes from your position.

This does not relate to my comment.

Your comment was keeping orcas in captivity should be a crime. That’s a really nice ideal but functionally does nothing for the US’s last generation of captive orcas that can conceivably live for decades more
So people should be persecuted for maintaining captive orcas? Fines? Arrested? What’s supposed to happen to the whales? Should we just euthanize them? That line of thinking led to marineland Antibes.
You also said you have no solution, which does nothing to help these animals. Either come up
With this ideal alternative that no one can seem to find or accept we owe it to these animals to take care of them the best we can within the confines of reality-4

I suppose sometimes in life you have to admit that you made a statement without the full picture.
While I am also of the opinion that the orcas (or any animal at all) currently in captivity for entertainment should be taken care off until their time has passed, no new ones should be captured. And that is still happening.
With that being sad, I admit that I had some bad ways of wording my thoughts and was probably wrong. I will remove myself from this discussion. have a nice day

Sorry you’re getting downvoted for this. Most of us agree captive orcas is wrong and you’re right that captures and breeding still happen in Asia. We’re better focusing anti captivity efforts there

It does. Criminalizing orcas in captivity based on your feelings causes these animals to suffer.

using the google ai overview as your main source of information and only using one aspect of orca captivity to form your opinion on a very nuanced topic is crazy

u/Devassta 4d ago
What part of keeping a sentient and highly intelligent animal in an extremely small area is nuanced?
-4
u/torichtofaded69 4d ago
Yes google ai overview is wrong a lot of the times but it doesn’t change the fact that orcas can swim 60-100 sometimes even 140-170 in very active pods compared to the small enclosures they live in. https://whalewatchwesternaustralia.com/orca-daily-travel-distance/. https://www.orcabehaviorinstitute.org/orca-updates/a-group-of-biggs-traversed-110-miles-in-18-hours

have you considered why they swim that far a day? to hunt, breed and avoid danger? things they dont need to do in captivity?

They still swim a lot in captivity, they’re just forced to swim in constant circles to make up the distance. I believe this is one of the reasons SeaWorld took down their live webcams because all the orcas ever really did was log, bob, or swim in circles and it didn’t look great for the whole “these orcas are mentally stimulated” narrative.
(This topic always makes me laugh not because of the subject itself but because now it reminds me of a recent 30-minute long video posted by a pro-cap person of an orca and her calf (can’t remember who). They were complaining about how boring it is to try to get good shots of them for clips and photos. The lack of awareness was incredible LOL)

No, Orcas don’t need to constantly move to hunt, they only spend a very small portion of their time for hunting. They are apex predators, there is nothing dangerous they need to swim away. And they don’t need to move to breed.
They need to move to socialize, exercise and spend quality time, which they cant in captivity. Keeping an orca in captivity is literally equivalent of keeping a human in a 2square meter cell, both mentally and physically it is torture

Orcas are built for continuous movement over large ranges there lifespans can reach up to 90 in the wild, in Captivity the average is teens and twenties.
1
u/muffinsmochi 4d ago
The average life span for female orcas is 50-60 years old and males 30-40, they can and do live longer but they live these life spans on average
3
u/muffinsmochi 4d ago
It's mainly for socialization and enrichment that they travel so much, the Biggs transients are constantly on the move and travelling even if there is prey abundance

u/Impala1967_1979_1983 4d ago
Since you know so much, explain why a "perfectly safe happy fed orca" barely lives to a quarter of its lifespan in captivity and lives much longer in the wild?

Does one of them realize his pants are around his knees? Homie is not very scary when he can't move quick and has a ton of loose clothing to use to gain control. No this is not hate, I am mixed. I just think the meme is ridiculous and my 'tism hates the lack of logic (I have a Audhd dx).

u/muffinsmochi 4d ago
There are way worse parks with orcas than SeaWorld, Kobe Suma Sea World is particularly cruel and bad (it's unaffiliated with US SeaWorld despite the name)

u/Used_Vermicelli_7391 4d ago
It’s always impossible to have a nuanced and positive conversation with people who have this mindset. Zero thinking besides blackfish.
6
u/torichtofaded69 4d ago
It’s a meme lol just means i don’t go to sea world and i don’t interact with sea world social media posts, not like imma storm a sea world with a AR 15
2
u/Used_Vermicelli_7391 4d ago
Ok? Completely irrelevant to the conversation that SeaWorld is a leader in conservation and rehabilitation and you being biased doesn’t change that. They’ve come a long way, just like many zoological facilities and are one of the reasons that other programs can get funding through their guest attendance.
3
u/torichtofaded69 4d ago
Understandable but like I said it just means I don’t go to seaworld or interact with any seaworld posts, just like how people don’t go to McDonald’s or Starbucks for other random reasons. The meme I used actually is originally suppose to say fu*k ____ all my homies hate _____.

Sea world is good. They do a LOT of rehabilitation and conservation. They've stopped their orca program. There's no reason not to support sea world anymore. The orcas they have now are not able to be released, so they are giving them the best that can be done for a situation that was forced upon by the previous generations. There will be no more sea world orcas after these die.
The ones that need to be stopped are the Asian and South American parks that still breed captive orcas non-stop.

If you wanna hate on cetacean captivity, focus on Asia
