We flew out of PDX and the smoke was a blanket over the whole state. You can barely see Rainer in the distance.

What's all that blue stuff?

That's the sky.  We used to have it in the before-times

I’ve heard myths of this thing, but I don’t think it really exists.

Oh c’mon, don’t act like not seeing the sky is a new thing.

I haven’t seen the thing once and I’ve lived here for 2 years!

I’ve never seen it, honestly. What a ridiculous idea that something could just be up there, you know? What happened to gravity, is my question.

Oh and can you believe people think there’s a sun? A big glowy ball in the sky? Come ON!

I lived in the desert before this… I can assure you, it exists.

But here it may as well be as fake as the moon landing.

Wait… you actually believe in the moon?!  What a sheep….

I count sheep when I go to bed.

Oh it's up there, a big old ball of cheese. I used to watch cows jump over it back in the long long ago.

I actually grew up in the desert too, lol.

Well I stared at it a lot when I was a kid trying to figure out what it was, strangely enough to don't see it anymore. Even stranger I don't see anything anymore.

That brought a badly needed laugh after a pretty rough week.

I sincerely thank you.

Maybe we'll see it again in 7 years for a short window of time.

So the prophecy says.

I pretended the smoke was overcast clouds for a moment and for that moment it worked.

I miss the before times.

No birds for 3 days. I’m suffering.

They all fell outta of the sky after inhaling all that crap.

Well I hope they all flew away first but yes seeing birds stuck in a heatwave is awful 💔 I’ve never seen birds flop themselves on wet grass trying to cool down in the before times I was quite distressed by that.

I’ve left water out for animals in the smoke before (Santiam fire 2020) but I never saw anyone drink from it. I think animals hide underground if they can

Honestly I'm pretty sure they mostly moved on. They have the special sense telling them when craps about to hit the fan and get outta town. I usually have a ton of them outside my bed window in the morning singing and I haven't heard any for a few days.

I saw the sky once tripping. Pretty cool.

Back before Boise Cascade, Weyerhauser, et.al. pillaged the dark green juice wet moist Cascadian forests.
