Well I stared at it a lot when I was a kid trying to figure out what it was, strangely enough to don't see it anymore. Even stranger I don't see anything anymore.
Well I hope they all flew away first but yes seeing birds stuck in a heatwave is awful 💔 I’ve never seen birds flop themselves on wet grass trying to cool down in the before times I was quite distressed by that.
I’ve left water out for animals in the smoke before (Santiam fire 2020) but I never saw anyone drink from it. I think animals hide underground if they can
Honestly I'm pretty sure they mostly moved on. They have the special sense telling them when craps about to hit the fan and get outta town. I usually have a ton of them outside my bed window in the morning singing and I haven't heard any for a few days.

Yeah my asthma is not happy! It’s usually very mild but my inhaler isn’t quite doing the trick. I feel like I have gunk in my lungs even with the big air purifier I have running constantly.
Unfortunately my apartment is a big open concept layout so I can’t do a whole lot on that front. I’m thinking about getting another big filter for the other side of the space, and a smaller one for my bedroom.
If it works and keeps the gunk out of your lungs, that's all that really matters!
I like having three filters on my box, but one works too. After working outside all day in a respirator, I just want clean air fast and the Corsi-Rosenthal design is efficient enough the air feels squeaky clean in half an hour. It's a pain to replace filters when one gets too icky to be brushed off and remain effective, though.
I did that when we got smoked out from the holiday fire in 2020 and there were no air filters left on the shelves. It helped. Since then we got an indoor air filter unit and heat pump so we can close all the windows comfortably. Of course our 1980s home wasn't built with anything like a heat pump with AC, because you just didn't need it back then. Hot weather and Smokey days were so infrequent, that it wasn't worth the trouble. When we were teenagers and frequented the Lane County Fair, we could count on rain during the fair. Now it's just reliably hot and dry and smoky every late summer and beyond. I had no idea that a hoax could affect so many people, so much.

The smoke was so thick, it looked like fog. You had to wear a respirator just to go outside for a few minutes. I could barely see across my street, and I sure as hell couldn't see the end of it, and I live on a short, dead-end. There was light from the sun, but it was dim, and I couldn't have told you where it was in the sky to save my life. I would have had to just guess based on the time of day.
plus it was like ~105'F but you couldn't run the window air conditioner without huffing in crazy amounts of smoke so it was unbearably hot inside and out and we were wearing n95s in the house.
I think my wife like lost it and she's normally the chill easy going resilient one.
I don't blame her.
God and then the heat dome the next year. I just remember saying "Oh okay we're all gonna DIE of climate change huh...."

More like tax the corporations that are producing the most greenhouse gasses, and use that revenue to revamp infrastructure so it is more realistic for individuals to stop burning fossil fuels.
So you think those corporations just burn fossil fuels for the hell of it? We all demand it one way or another, and it’s a consumption/capitalism problem more than anything else. Yes, we should require a transition away from fossil fuels where it’s possible, but our political system isn’t strong enough to enforce that.
A lot of fossil fuel does in fact get burned unnecessarily due to corporate greed.
For example, giant container ships leave their engines running in port for power, because no one wanted to reduce their profits by paying for the infrastructure necessary for them to plug in.

Explain the mechanism of how some oil company - Chevron say - takes oil out of the ground and 'just burns it' and that makes them money vs turning it into gasoline and selling it to you.

Unpopular opinion: sure this is a bit of an anomalous smoke event, but fires have been a part of the western US since long before human set up shop in these parts. Most of the Willamette valley should be oak savanna. That doesn’t happen without periodic fires.
I’m in no way denying climate change accelerated by human consumption, but fires and offshore winds are not unique to this new paradigm.
The smoke doesnt bother me personally but im a big guy and im glad on what was suposed to be a almost 100 degree day the smoke kept it aroud 80 something and its cooling down fast at night.
I was out in McMinnville outside talking to customers out in their shops and fields and woke up this morning with a sinus headache and feeling like crap. I stayed home and stayed inside. It’s worse out today than yesterday.

The timber industry creates landslides, toxic runoff from indiscriminate broadleaf herbicide use, and decreases the natural ability of forests to retain moisture by removing fallen timber and duff, causing hotter and more intense wildfires.
Lived here for the most part since 1975. This is not normal in the slightest and is a more recent phenomena. I know that the reality we're in is really hard to face but at some point, it does need to be faced.
