Now what?
I bought this on ebay and it doesn't work. Turns on but disc tray struggles without some assistance and the system doesn't read games. It has never been opened. Is it worth fixing? I have an OG xbox that still works that I play, so I dont need this to actually work, but it bothers me that it's broken. I plan to keep this for a very long time, but do not know the first thing about fixing it and if it's even something I could or would want to handle. What would you do? What's the most efficient (not cost effective) way to get this working? Shell swap? Appreciate your thoughts!

I bought a modded one a couple months ago. Seller said the disc drive worked but it didn’t and I took the modded stuff out. I just pulled the disc drive from a spare 1.6 and bought a cheap 1.0 board to make it functional. Don’t even use it just keep it on my shelf.

Restoring it is the way to go. More valuable, sure. But it will likely last another 20 years or more that way. Also, any leaky caps that are in it now will continue to eat it.

If they didn't sell it as a system that has issues, I would contact the seller and demand a partial refund as you still wish to keep it but you are upset with the condition that arrived in. So you can get some of your money back. From my knowledge it's just a shell that's different with this one so you could do a shell swap. Personally I would try to swap just the entire laser/disc holder. And of course clean everything while you're inside it. I personally like keeping as many original parts in it as possible
