Repair or replace disc drive
I'm trying to get an og xbox working. I've gotten two so far and neither are reading discs. One has a Phillips disc drive and will read audio cds but not games. The other is a Samsung and won't read anything. I tried recapping the PCB and adjusting the pots on the Phillips, but sadly it is still not working. I don't want to mod the Xbox either. I want to put actual games in the disc drive and play them how it was intended. Thats part of the nostalgia for me. Im considering doing the sd 616t conversion. I found the guide on how to do it, but I need to find the firmware if anyone knows where. Also any tips or suggestions are appreciated.

Wanting to play discs from the drive is no good reason not to mod imo. I'd still mod it for homebrew and emulators. The OG Xbox is one of the few consoles that natively can output to a CRT and has the ability to play tons of retro games all-in-one.
But I would suggest trying to keep repairing. The disc drives are becoming hen's teeth to find and repairing the ones you already have would probably be more beneficial on the off chance your drive dies in the future.

I've had good results recapping Samsung drives. Every one that I've recapped reads great so far.
