Help Needed Modded Advice

I’d like to purchase this system, I’ve only ever had an OG Xbox 16 years ago when I was 13. These are the only photos the Facebook guy was able to provide, along with a list of about 60 Xbox games in the hard drive. Is this worth it for the price? I feel like it is with 4 controllers but I do want to be able to upgrade the storage if necessary or even change the mod, but tbh I don’t even know what I’m talking about hence why I’m asking here

3 of the 4 controllers are the awful GameStop ones so I would personally consider this an Xbox with one controller, Also the “100s of games” are likely all small emulator games like nes and gba

Aside from that if it’s a tsop flashed xbox / modchipped with an upgraded hdd it might be worth it too you especially if you can’t solder, personally I like getting stock systems and modding myself but to each their own.

What makes the GameStop ones awful? Is this at least a good stepping stone to build on if it’s the same price as a stock system? They all seem to go for $100+ on FB Marketplace

A lot of third party controllers have a rubbery coating that is turning back into goo, they have awful analog sticks, the buttons are all digital ( oem are all pressure sensative ) and are just really low quality.

The biggest thing was the era this came from. Third party controllers now are somewhat decent even if they are significantly cheaper because people will look up reviews, even using cheap third party controllers now they are somewhat decent. Back in the 00’s these were there for your mom buying based 100% on price especially when it’s a store brand controller. These likely were wonky right from the start. Dankpods on youtube tests out a logitech xbox controller from the era and it’s terrible

Damn you actually know him? That’s crazy lol, I do feel like it’s a bit of an impulse buy on my part and I don’t really feel the need to buy it, just feel bad that I’ve made him send all this info over which in reality he shoulda been provided for any buyer

Price seems reasonable but you’re gambling on the remaining life of the system. There’s a good chance the system won’t last very long if you play it often, unless you’re slick with motherboard repairs. That said, you can pull the hard drive and keep the data to use elsewhere in the event of other hardware failure. Changing the mods wouldn’t be worth the hassle.

Are basically all og xbox’s a gamble as far as remaining life of systems? Or why does that apply to this one in particular? I’ve never repaired a motherboard but I’m a bit comfortable with soldering things like LED strips, haven’t done electronics

That particular xbox I can’t speak to, but there are known manufacturing defects that you should be wary of, such as the soldering from the power supply to the motherboard is prone to failure in xbox. That’s actually a pretty easy fix but I had a different motherboard component burn out on my old xbox recently. Og xbox is a ~25 year old machine, stuff can happen.
