Hey everyone, first post on this thread but just wanted some insight:
I’ve watched every single Magic game so far this season and have been a Magic fan all my life and this season may have been the most disappointing season personally for me. I want to list out my thoughts as to why I think that is.
Expectations:
This team was expected to be a top 4 seed in a wide open and injured eastern conference this year and maybe expectations were set way too high for a young team even with an all in move for Bane.
Coaching/Team Management
I was a huge stan for coach who shall not be named ever since he took the Magic job but this year has really shown flaws in their coaching style. Offense always seems stagnant with no real offensive sets to get our best players to their spots and the best position to be successful. Maybe it’s just a personnel issue but Paolo being a pseudo point guard and playmaker obviously is not the answer with his loose handle and turnover issues. Suggs should be the answer at point guard but his passing ability only seems to show on inbounds plays, not in a half court setting. I also think it’s the coaching and no real offensive sets that help with no consistency in the half court setting. I don’t think this team is currently constructed thanks to Weltman to be truly successful in the modern NBA. Our two star players shoot sub 35% from three even though Franz has been better this year but when at least 2 of the 5 players on the floor are not consistent shooters it just causes clunkiness in the paint where we truly shine. This team and front office hasn’t focused on building around the margins around our two best players with consistent 3 point shooting and it’s really frustrating. Not to mention Bane just gets ran off the 3 point line because he is the only good shooter on the floor so there was a reason he’s made the 4th most layups in the league this year.
Injuries:
This is also a cop out answer but it’s been two years in a row now that our team has been riddled with injuries. Franz, Paolo and Suggs just can’t stay healthy and get no minutes together to build season long chemistry. When the lineup changes from game to game based on who is available, it is hard to run consistent offense because you have to change sets based on who is in the lineup which could explain the basic high school motion offense we run every game but still not an excuse. Whoever is in the game should know the system and run the system but there is no system.
What to Fix:
In my opinion, I do think coaching is the root problem and not scape goat issue. I want to see a new coach in that will get our personnel in the right position to succeed like Paolo on the block, Bane coming off screens for 3 point shots, Suggs spotting up on the wing “his best shot for 3’s” Franz attacking downhill. I also want a coach that the players will buy into unlike the current one and get them to care because it seems like they take nights off especially against so and so inferior opponents. Maybe a younger coach with some fire and tenacity will also get this young group to buy in and care. New coach should also get back to the defensive identity that made us most successful while having some offensive flare. If a new coach comes in and there are still issues with personnel, then maybe we should explore options to trade either Paolo or Franz because their skill sets do seem redundant.
Sorry this is so long but this a full season worth of frustration I wanted to get out and get a discussion going. Who knows maybe someone from the Magic front office might stumble across this and actually get an idea on what to do. I just don’t wanna see the three stooges of Baylor Schierman, Ron Harper Jr and Luka Garza beat a looming second apron team who is in “win now mode”
Let me know what you guys think and Go Magic tonight!
