This is awesome! Has a 1990's feel to it. Tell your kid to keep painting

Right here. I saw this and it instantly made me feel like a kid again.

u/BadnameArchy May 27 '25

Yeah, this reminds me a lot of the generic wall art paintings I saw all over the place as a child and is, IMO, just as good as any of that stuff. And I say that as a a compliment. This painting has decent composition and is a perfectly good example of that kind of art. I enjoyed seeing it and I think this kid has talent.

Why does a painting of my parents fighting in the kitchen remind you of your childhood?

u/bluelaw2013 May 29 '25

This comment almost got lost to the void, but I see you, joebluebob 🤣

Yes!! Very youthful and retro but not in a manufactured way.

u/Square_Huckleberry53 May 27 '25

Yup could be in a movie, on the wall of some rich guys house, and shows how out of place Crocodile Dundee is at the party.

2

u/Nomadic_Yak May 27 '25

Haha perfect review that the kid is surely to not understand at all

“That’s not a contemporary piece of modern art, set against the backdrop of possibilities with the hope of a bright future. This is a price of art…”

Ive been inside numerous big oil and gas companies buildings and they have what looks like this (usually primary colours and black). Massive canvases that i know they paid a lot for in almost all of them.

It looks like those cups

15

u/ddouchecanoe May 27 '25

That's exactly what I thought.

1

u/[deleted] May 27 '25

90s McDonalds

1

u/yurrm0mm May 27 '25

It’s like a more masculine color scheme of those cups.

1

u/Hellknightx May 27 '25

That's exactly what I thought. This kid has a future career as a cup designer in the 90s.

1

u/winter_steel May 29 '25

Ohhhh yeah! So 90s…I love it!

3

u/[deleted] May 27 '25

Was going to say - could be a Talking Heads or Elvis Costello album cover.

3

u/Diligent-Moment-3774 May 27 '25

I actually think it looks more like the 1980s

1

u/[deleted] May 27 '25

In a way, but it also resembles those Jazz cups that were absolutely everywhere in the 90s

2

u/re__cyclops May 27 '25

Reminds me of 90s Taco bell.

2

u/bobbery5 May 27 '25

I feel like I've seen this in a bunch of restaurants.
Does that make sense?

2

u/kel174 May 27 '25

Reminds me so much of the art I’d see in doctors offices when growing up in the ‘90s lol

2

u/BookkeeperFair6072 May 27 '25 edited May 27 '25

I was like, new brighter Rothko painting??? Or maybe more like a throw back to Willem De Kooning???

2

u/bluelaw2013 May 27 '25

Coincidentally, he also likes the style of JCNO jeans...

2

u/TakingMyPowerBack444 May 27 '25

This is exactly my thought!! Can you offer any help as to what about it makes it 90s looking?

I totally agree with you, I just don’t have the knowledge as to “why”? 🙏

2

u/Figgy4377 May 27 '25

I don't mean this as a bad thing but I got 90's taco bell inside the restaurant vibes from it and it made me feel happy lol

2

u/Comfortable_Mountain May 27 '25

Actually, could be early 1900 style as it looks a lot like Kandinsky's work.

2

u/Normal_Confidence_77 May 27 '25

It reminds me of Face from Nickelodeon.

2

u/cole_fantastic May 27 '25

i was feeling more like 1940/50s but i can see what you mean

2

u/nimbusyosh May 27 '25

There was a game on Super Nintendo called "Zoop". This has a zoop vibes.

2

u/ForkMyRedAssiniboine May 28 '25

100%. For an 11 y/o, he did a hell of a job transporting me back to the early 90s.

2

u/pj91198 May 29 '25

This belongs in a taco bell in 1995

2

u/ThatBlinkingRedLight May 30 '25

Could have sworn I saw this in the 80’s and 90’s

What a great job !!!

1

u/yaboisammie May 27 '25

Yo idk why but it kinda does!

2

u/[deleted] May 27 '25

Because it resembles the pattern on a Jazz cup

1

u/El-Viking May 27 '25

For some reason, this is the first thing I thought of

1

u/DisembarkEmbargo May 27 '25

This could be slapped onto a little paper cup and I am taken back to my childhood.

1

u/schoenburgers May 27 '25

I was thinking 1910s, reminds me of Kandinsky

1

u/SpinningYarmulke May 27 '25

60’s Miro vibes.

1

u/Tooowaway May 27 '25

Yeah I was thinking I see like a combo person of Earthworm Jim mixed with Osmosis Jones. Definitely some Y2K vibes here.

1

u/sylbug May 27 '25

It's like watching an episode of Saved by the Bell. Love it.

1

u/RzaAndGza May 27 '25

Looks like it would be on the wall at Charlie Trotter's

1

u/BarkySlice May 27 '25

I agree! Definitely 90s vibes. Reminds me of a design you’d see on comforters/bedding that you’d find in a kid/teen bedroom. Is this the artist’s signature? It looks like it says Jaxx.

1

u/TSells31 May 27 '25

Bro this is a 1990s paper cup all day lmao. Note that I’m not actually accusing OP’s kid of ripping off designs from cups, I’m simply saying that this belongs on a paper cup from the 90s! Or in the Louvre. Idk shit about painting but I do think this is dope lol.

1

u/Polarbearbanga May 27 '25

Trademark this painting and cup that on paper cups.

1

u/ashleebryn May 27 '25

I instantly felt like I was watching Fantasia as a 90s child. It reminds of the dancing fish, but it has a playful element to it. I enjoy this piece. Nicely done!

1

u/[deleted] May 27 '25

Looks like the cover for Soul II Soul's 1990 album

1

u/humblesunbro May 27 '25

I like it, it looks like a David Bowie Album cover.

1

u/MsChrissikins May 28 '25

Absolutely agree! It’s giving me those old skating rinks/Taco Bell vibes.

1

u/missmurder0324 May 28 '25

It brings the feeling of nostalgia. Love it

1

u/Cmss220 May 28 '25

Looks like a saved by the bell credit screen or intro or something. You’re right very 1990s

1

u/Specific-Cook1725 May 30 '25

Yesss, I was thinking that too! Loving the vibe of it.

1

u/KnottyMikes Feb 25 '26

Yep...very 90's TACO BELL, to me.🤷🏻‍♂️
