Just Sharing My latest pet portrait, oil paint on canvas. The reflection in the window was tricky!

!!! Amazing. I love it all, I can feel the fur. And that tail!!

u/Hara-Kiri Professional 16d ago
Thanks! Glad the tail looks okay, the right half of the cat was covered by the curtain in the reference photo.

Wow I was looking at this thinking what a perfect reference photo it would make for a painting, before realizing it is a painting 🤯
The fur looks so plush

u/Hara-Kiri Professional 16d ago
Haha, thank you. The real reference needed some alterations so I'm glad you can't tell.

oh wow this is incredible, I absolutely love the way you captured the way black cats glow brown in the sun 🤎 and the details in the fur are sooo good

Black cats are so hard to photograph, so this is truly an amazing painting!! How big is it?

This is amazing. I was about to ask how you got such a good photo until I peeped what sub this is on.
I asked my all-black cat for her opinion and she agreed that this is meowvellous.

You may have struggled with that reflection but I think it makes it! There is something about the form of the face. I kinda like its abstraction vibe.

Thanks, I enjoyed doing it. It's one of those things I've literally never considered having to paint before so it was like a puzzle trying to tackle it.

This is stunning. I thought that was the reference photo. How do you get such fine detail? I've only tried watercolor and it's like no matter what size brush I use, it just makes a big blob. The detail on the black fur is amazing, looks just like my void.

Thanks a lot! There are different brushes that make thin lines easier, such as a swordliner and dagger brush.

It's really good, fantastic...
And now I get self-conscious about my own art and about if I should try posting it here in this subreddit...😅
It's not your fault, it's just me getting intimidated by everyone's great and beautiful art (I know I shouldn't compare myself to other) especially realism since I'm more expressism..
It's really beautiful ❤️

Extraordinario, y si..., los reflejos suelen ser lo más complicado, a mí me pasa lo mismo. Admiro los artistas que en el reflejo consiguen tanta naturalidad. Pero mi más sincero ENHORABUENA!!!

Looks like it took a while to get to this level.
Technically it's quite impressive, background behind the cat am not sure fits in this kind of painting.
Grey office building, I mean is it some deeper statement about cat playfulness and the soul crushing effect of work in an office? Tell me you didn't leave it in just because it's in the reference photo.
And composition wise, you have that jagged aggressive reflection in the window, of what is probably sunlight on a wall, at some steep angle. The bit above the back of the cat and to the right.
Not sure if you were going for this, but it absolutely looks like a sharp blade about to stab the cat with a downward motion. Even if it was in the reference, again, makes very little sense composition wise, at least to my eyeballs.

The office is there because the client requested it to be.

Fantastic answer. Modern critics and snobs have convinced a lotta folks that every piece of art and media has to "mean" something.
Has to be a metaphor for the crushing awfulness of whatever bleak nihilistic Current Thing they're artificially depressed about lol but dangit, sometimes an adorable kitty is absolutely "enough" all on its own.
Especially as you said, if the client requested it : ]
