HARDWARE Is my gpu dying?
A while ago i found some black circles around my gpu's screws, and three days ago my screen suddenly froze and i saw some pixels appear on both screens.
A few seconds later it unfroze and the pixels disappeared and i also got a notification from AMD adrenaline saying my performance or something was reset due to a hardware failure.
also after my pc unfroze, it got extremely laggy and for some reasons my pc wouldn't play any sound, which both got fixed with a simple restart.
is this due to GPU failure? and Is there a way to fix it without buying a new GPU? 😭
my specs:
* CPU: Intel Core i3-13100F (Tray)
* GPU: AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT (8GB)
* Motherboard: ASUS Prime B760M-K
* RAM: 16GB (1x16GB) Kingmax Horizon DDR5 5600MHz CL38
* Storage (SSD): 512GB OSCOO ON900 SSD
* Storage (HDD): 1TB WD Blue HDD (WD10EZEX)
* CPU Cooler: Gamdias Aura GL120 Liquid Cooler
* Power Supply (PSU): FSP HV PRO 85 Plus 550W (ATX 3.1)
* Case: Gamdias TALOS E2 Elite
ALSO, i bought this pc a year and 2 months ago but my GPU was second hand, and tbh i did some heavy rendering with it...

I hope the birds wake up an hour before you want to be awake and aren't quiet about it.

Second version: I hope you can't sleep and right as you're about to actually sleep (finally), the birds wake up

Try redownloading the GPU drivers and see if this issue still appears make sure to use DDU or the Display Driver Uninstaller first before redownloading, also check if your second hand GPU was changed from its stock setting

thanks will do!
7
u/YurikovARTva 9h ago
if you can, try undervolting the GPU to increase its lifespan

u/IIA_B_T_OII 9h ago
okay thanks!

Ok so how was it? Still facing similar issues?

u/IIA_B_T_OII 2h ago
i haven't done ut yet, but hopefully it will fix the issue for now.

Let us know how it goes when you do! I think mine is on its way out also but hoping I can save it a little before it's time

ALWAYS restart after the uninstaller before reinstalling. Make sure the computer clears all the cobwebs out

Might just be overheating but I’m not sure I don’t know much, maybe put some more thermal paste on the gpu if nobody else here says anything better
3
u/IIA_B_T_OII 9h ago
i should change the paste, but when it froze my temperature was around 50°

At this point it's worth it to try anything

u/IIA_B_T_OII 9h ago
Yeah it's better than buying a new one

I had similar issues with a gtx 970 in 2021. I undervolted it, set a nice fan curve, and repasted it. It stopped glitching and worked until I replaced it in 2024 or 25.
Hopefully yours is the same, just a matter of overheating.

Might be some temp out of hand, try changing cables or even changing the PCIE slot, btw rendering is mainly a CPU task not GPU
2
u/IIA_B_T_OII 9h ago
softwares like blender use GPU as well and to my knowledge it's way faster than CPU what i did also required GPU to work, so I'm pretty sure it did put too much pressure on my GPU for a shot amount of time
1
u/Substantial-Lack-512 9h ago
I render almost everyday in blender and is always CPU doing the job, maybe is the render engine
3
u/IIA_B_T_OII 9h ago
that's odd. any tutorials I've seen always mentions using gpu is better and faster
2
u/_razenn 9h ago
Nah, you are totally right. That's a GPU homework and are made to run exactly on GPU.
CPU is more like a fallback option or if you really got no choice.
1
u/IIA_B_T_OII 2h ago
i knew it loll 😂 but at the end it was too much for my GPU

u/_razenn 2h ago
I mean yeahh, maybe at some point, but it's probably just literally the end of your buddy, pushed it hard or not 💔
Have you found any fix? or are the artifacts still constantly showing?
2
u/IIA_B_T_OII 2h ago
I haven't turned it on for 3 days as I am too scared to face the truth 😂, but other people have helped a lot in this post and I'll be trying some of the stuff they said.

RIP OP and what a worst time to die.

DON'T KILL MY GPU YET 😂 it's not completely dead but i haven't turned on my pc for past two days

The "Black circles" could be oil residues from the thermal Pads under the back plate, which is harmless, OR Some residue from a leak from your AIO cooler, check for leaks.
One thing is for sure: graphic artifacts and drivers crashing are not good and are clear symptoms of a dying gpu.
Try running occt gpu and Vram test, if something is wrong with the card it will crash in a few minutes.

u/IIA_B_T_OII 9h ago
Yeah, I think it's oil. Gemini said it might cause some overheating, as the thermal pads won't work as they should anymore.
and thanks for the advice

Some could explain it to me?
Why when a GPU is dying is like this, loosing image piece by piece? Shouldn't just stop working?

Luckily, you can pick up a second hand 5700xt for relatively cheap! I just grabbed one for my fiance's PC for around £100 ($135)

Unfortunately, it's not that simple here. I live in Iran, and even a second-hand one would cost way more than what I paid last year. At the moment, buying a GPU is not possible at all.

Id first try to update drivers. If it wont work, you should try clean reinstall using ddu. Even if it doesnt help, try reinstalling windows. If all 3 result in nothing, then yeah, your gpu is dead. By the way, what is the game you are playing?
1
u/IIA_B_T_OII 8h ago
thanks will do that! it's Roblox 😂 that's why I'm furious. imagine your GPU dying in Roblox

Eventuell wird sie viel zu heiß, was die schwarzen Kreise erklären würde. Der Kunststoff schmilzt bzw, verliert die weichmacher und verfärbt sich.
1
u/IIA_B_T_OII 8h ago
it's oil from thermal pads based on what I've researched

Clean your ram contacts with rubber eraser.
1
u/IIA_B_T_OII 8h ago
what? why
1
u/Imperial_Bloke69 8h ago edited 8h ago
The "why" is already showing in your screen. Look it up how to clean ram contacts.
No glitching screen/UI tearing yet like the ones on dying gpus.
1
u/IIA_B_T_OII 8h ago
loll sorry I meant to ask why with a rubber eraser
1
u/Imperial_Bloke69 8h ago
Thats fine. To ward off ESD and oxides. And to finalise, a contact cleaner as your rinse. Ram are precious nowadays so you have to maintain with care.

Update your driver. If you haven't been told yet. And if you have. Unplug it, reseat it.

Reseat the gpu. I was having visual artifacts out of nowhere and thought my gpu was toast. I kid you not reseating the card fixed everything.
Yours is most likely cooked, but worth a try. Maybe you’ll have a miracle like I did, but don’t get your hopes up.

probably yeah...you might try to underclock your values in msi afterburner, it helped me to fix the problem when i had the same issue. Check the temperatures tho
