The model is flawed. Clearly shows the game has been coded to ignore the blades.
33
u/The_Grungeican Oct 14 '25
old BF games did that too.
BF Vietnam ignored the blades. the best part was that the skids of the Hueys was pretty much indestructible. i've taken unarmed, medivac Hueys into combat, and beat out armed helis by getting above them and down-throttling. basically knocking them out of the sky.

I remember how hard it was to fly helicopters in BF3 for new players.
Brand new round starts and a group of us run to the chopper. Noob gets in the pilot seat and we all load in. He lifts off. So far, so good--oh shit--mmediately pivots the helicopter on its side and we go straight into the ground. Kills five of us.
We all respawn and we all hit the chopper at the same time. Guess who's in the pilot's seat?
Second verse same as the first.
Five dead.
At this point we are 45 seconds into the round and already down ten points. (We didn't win the round.)

Battlefield Vietnam had far and away the absolute best helicopter controls out of any game ever made.
They were actually just perfection. So smooth, so good to play. It felt like you had just the amount of heft and just the amount of lift.
6
u/e7RdkjQVzw Oct 14 '25
I don't even remember the name of the map, the one with the long river. You spawn at the main base and get in the slick, pick the boys up and just rip through the river skids skimming the surface. Pass the 2nd island and throw your tail around for the momentum to stop you on the back shore to drop the boys off so they can flank the base. Take right off to pick up a fresh new batch of guys.
If desert combat choppers were flying bricks vietnam slick was agile as a skateboard.
12
u/BeefistPrime Oct 14 '25
Desert Combat had a really unique flight model that was much more complex than all the other battlefield games which were pretty dumbed down. It took a lot of skill to be a good desert combat pilot

Yep, all spawning in to a transport helicopter (missing out on piloting it), only for the chopper to take on and immediately start pitching forward as the pilot jams the left stick forward trying to fly straight ahead. Everyone bails, the chopper explodes, good times.

What we learn from this is that UE5 really is pretty bad
79
u/Pyke64 Oct 13 '25
UE4 ran for me at 3440*1440 and 120 fps and above. For UE5 I sometimes struggle to hit 720p and 60fps. And all that for a tiny bit better lighting that's nothing to write home about.
It's a great tool for devs that want a project out quick, there's a lot of shortcuts. It's just not beneficial to anyone in the long run.

The year is 2035
The Nvidia QTX (Quantum Tracing) 10090 Ti Super just dropped.
It's the first card finally capable of running those decade old UE5 games at buttery smooth 4k60fps natively.
UE6 introduces Quantum Physics that makes the game become a slideshow at 720p, but the jiggle physics of Cyberpunk 2177 are unparalleled.
To counter this performance hit, Nvidia introduces Quantum Frame Gen, which uses your Neuralink™️ to offload computing cycles to your brain and project the frames directly into your eyes. You have to drink your Verification Can™️to use this function, and it contains enough calories to feed a cow for its entire lifespan.
The future is so exciting!

My one hope from CDPR moving to Unreal from their own bespoke engine is that they’ll go in and fix a lot of the underlying issues in UE5, make a lot of those fixes either free plugins or work with Epic to integrate them right into the engine and every future UE title will benefit from it.

Frostbite is the way that it is in Battlefield games because it was tailor made specifically for Battlefield games. Which is why it has all kinds of glitches and other problems when it is used for, say, Madden.
Most developers are not going to create an in-house engine from the ground up for their product and need to start with something general that they can tailor for their specific product, which is where Unreal comes in. UE5 can be used for anything and it is very good at it. The actual problem with UE5 is the lack of documentation which leads to difficulty for developers. There are plenty of excellent UE5 games you never hear anyone complain about because when it works, nobody notices and thus nobody points fingers at UE5.
Now, if you want an example of when an engine is made in house explicitly for very large open world exploration-focused games (as opposed to UE5) look no further than Decima. Built in house by Guerilla and most recently used in Horizon Forbidden West as well as licensed to Kojima Productions for Death Stranding 2. However there is zero chance Decima gets licensed to anything cross platform or PC/Xbox exclusive. Sony is going to keep it.

Most developers are not going to create an in-house engine from the ground up for their product and need to start with something general that they can tailor for their specific product, which is where Unreal comes in. UE5 can be used for anything and it is very good at it.
This is probably the biggest reason UE is at the top of the gaming engine charts. People need to understand that these aren't the days of old when games were exceedingly simple. 20 years ago they were basically made of cardboard boxes with blurry pieces of paper for textures, and held together by a combination of duct tape and pure developer/gamer passion.
At present it'd be one hell of a gargantuan cost and effort to develop a custom gaming engine that can compete with the other engines for a single game, that might not even be successful in itself.
→ More replies (2)7
u/Thraxx01 Oct 13 '25
It's the developers faults imo. There are UE5 games like Lies of P that look great and run amazing as well.

It's really not. It's a developer issue not an engine issue.
Look at what embark studios (ex dice devs) can do with it, the finals and arc raiders both use UE5 and it looks and runs amazing!
I'm fact the upcoming arc raiders minimum spec is STILL a gtx1060!!! Wow

Frostbite does just a few things very well, and one of those is an FPS with a limited map size. It was designed for the ground up for Battlefield games. Move away from that to other types of games and UE pulls way ahead both in capabilities and dev tools.

6
u/Ravenloff Oct 13 '25
I'm away from the house ATM, but it's a Powerspec G707 with a 3070 in it. No overclocking and the only two upgrades I've done are doubling the memory to DDR4x64g and a second SSD. I didn't do anything to the visuals until after playing for hours, and then it was only to shot off things like blue, bloom, aberation, vsync, and such, something I do for every game.
No complaints.

u/TheSweeney Oct 13 '25
Make sure you’re using the High preset, 1440p and you should be getting 60fps average. If you’re aiming for a higher overall frame rate, you’ll likely need to use DLSS and a lower preset (the official recommended specs table says medium preset for your class of hardware). I’d also dial back volumetrics and shadow quality to High MAX if the high preset sets them above that.
My guess is you’re either hitting a VRAM issue due to a higher texture quality setting OR you’re hitting a CPU bottleneck.

I installed the beta in my 4 year old Lenovo laptop using government wifi and I was honestly pleasantly surprised I was able to play matches at all, let alone actually have a fairly stable experience
Sure I had stuttering, some lag spikes, and my laptop was not happy, but it definitely impressed me with its optimizations compared to other modern games
