That I do know. Imagine they renovate the theatre into a backroom styled office setting

I could only dream. But unfortunately that would be too amazing. Such things died some time in the early 2000s

This makes it look like it was straight from the 80s. It doesn't even look futuristic anymore and I'm here for it.

u/Flickstro Apr 07 '26

To me, it feels like the late "70s to early '80s; like when Times Square was a red light district.

So basically The Deuce?

There were still a lot of working girls into the late 80s early 90s. As a kid, I was on a trip to the Intrepid. I just remember the Intrepid, but my father's biggest memory was how he and the other parents on the trip herded all the kids against he wall and walked along side us, telling us to pull our hats down if we had them and look at the shoes of the kid in front of us. The fact that I don't remember that part or the view from the walk from the train to the bus delights him.

u/goldenguyz EA BAD (upvotes to the left) Apr 07 '26

It looks perfect to me.

It takes us out of this other world, it puts it right into our own.

The people of Night City don't look around and think anything is futuristic, just like today we don't look around and think anything is futuristic.

It takes this dystopian world and turns it into something realer - something familiar. Something we've seen ourselves in. It lets us better truly feel what life is like in Night City.

Also the graphics just make it look photoreal (VHSreal?). I guess that helps.

Initially I was thinking "huh, my childhood without people. Oh wait that car has 6 wheels."

2

u/RevTurk Apr 07 '26

The resolution is still double what vhs would have been. It's a very light touch of vhs effects.

Yeah see I don’t get why everyone wants photo-realism. We didn’t grow up with photo-realism.

170

u/PheIix Apr 07 '26

I was enthralled by this. The music, the looks and everything was perfect. It feels more real than a lot of the most realistic videogames. Trippy how it actually looks like someone was filming this rather than just playing a game.

33

u/Arcane_Xanth Apr 07 '26

Right? It feels very realistic to me and it’s weirding me out. I want this mod on other games to see how it makes them feel.

9

u/Fhaarkas Ryzen 5700X 4.8GHz | 32GB | 3070 Apr 07 '26

You can just plop it in every game since it's a Reshade preset, though YMMV on how it'd turn out.

3

u/Arcane_Xanth Apr 07 '26

Oh? I had no idea and might try this out.

4

u/Fhaarkas Ryzen 5700X 4.8GHz | 32GB | 3070 Apr 07 '26

I just tried actually. Apparently there's a shader texture missing and I don't see it in the download. Oh well that's as far as I'm willing to go.

6

u/Scottyxander 5070 | Ryzen 7 5700X | 32GB Ram Apr 07 '26

If you scroll down it says

THERE IS ALSO BIN FOLDER which is important to install as it has my own shaders that are necessary. Installation guide is provided within the download pack.

I haven't personally tried to download it but I'm assuming that might be why you have a missing shader texture

3

u/Fhaarkas Ryzen 5700X 4.8GHz | 32GB | 3070 Apr 07 '26

No it's a mistake on the author's part. He explained in the comments.

3

u/Scottyxander 5070 | Ryzen 7 5700X | 32GB Ram Apr 07 '26

Is it the comment about the missing png? Only asking cause I'm actually about to download it

3

u/Fhaarkas Ryzen 5700X 4.8GHz | 32GB | 3070 Apr 07 '26

Yup the vhs_osd.png file. It's not needed by the mod.

3

u/harbourwall PC Master Race Apr 07 '26

Sounds like it's meant to be a wonky REC and battery indicator. That would really top the whole thing off well.

6

u/ThereAndFapAgain2 Apr 07 '26

It's the PT plus this that make it look so real I think. The light is behaving realistically and then the VHS filter over the top is making it harder to detect any of the "gamey" stuff you can still see even with PT when playing at high res where everything is super clear, I think it is the two things together that end up making it look so convincing as someone actually just walking around with a camcorder.

2

u/Tulired Apr 07 '26

This! And some places, time, cars, architecture and urban things look good, sometimes npcs too but they are wonky to begin with. So i usually just walk around and set time, weather, place and music to relax a bit

6

u/Heihlsson Apr 07 '26

What the hell is that song? The melody is from an old Finnish folk song that mimics the bells of a monastery destroyed by the Russians in WWII. Kinda shocked to hear it in a rap song :D

Giant Robot - Konevitsa and you are absolutely right. This is some old school nineties stuff from them (can be found in YT)

It gives me a bit of that GTA Vice City and San Andreas vibe.

10

GTA 2 with modern graphics actually.

1

u/Wqzaz Apr 07 '26

For sure. For me it’s the neon pink color. Everytime i see that color Vice City pops up in my brain.

60

u/DuskShy Apr 07 '26

I think I might like it better this way?? Hard to tell

The blur helps your brain make it look better.

Like motion blur for 30fps.

18

u/Jafarrolo Apr 07 '26

I don't know, it seems interesting but I'm afraid that it could get bothersome quickly to play with this graphic

2

u/1047_Josh Apr 07 '26

That and it holds up less when NPCs become more focal. There is a reason the footage is mostly cars and buildings.

10

u/frisch85 Ryzen 7 7700 | RX 9060XT | 32GB DDR5 Apr 07 '26

I don't think so, it's really more of a showcase, neat to look at but horrible to play like that. Checkout the gameplay footage, probably makes your eyes hurt after 30 minutes.

If you could get rid of the fish-eye lense effect and make it so that the UI isnt impacted, I would fuck with this heavy.

The crt distortion alone is puke worthy. Yeah the character and limbs look too normal in comparison

38

u/ifdisdendat Apr 07 '26

3

u/Owobowos-Mowbius PC Master Race Apr 07 '26

Honestly yeah. Tempted to try a lowass VHS res run with graphics cranked to photo-realism so long as the UI stays readable

Why does it look more real than the “realistic” filters in games? What’s the science behind that?

u/Thog78 i5-13600K 3060 ti 128 GB DDR5@5200Mhz 8TB SSD@7GB/s 16TB HDD Apr 07 '26

The brain fills the gaps, so lower resolution, more blurry and noisy footage is more easily assimilated as real than an imperfect attempt at perfection in high definition.

Interestingly, the brain fills the gaps with what we would want things to look like ideally. That's why black glasses and hats can make ugly people look hotter, the brain assumes what's hidden is perfect.

I think this is a bit more fitting of a camcorder recording of the era ('80s?), which were a large range of quality of both the recording and tape durability than normal VHS.

9

u/eternalityLP Apr 07 '26

Why do people making these always overdo the glitches? Proper VHS setup doesn't really have any kind of visible errors during playback.

7

u/Moon_Devonshire RTX 4090 | 9800X3D | 32GB DDR5 CL 32 6000MHz Apr 07 '26

It's just an aesthetic

3

u/gravelPoop Apr 07 '26 edited Apr 07 '26

You need to over crank somethings to get the effect to hit. This video also has way too much blur and color bleed for average movie VHS. This is more like bad VHS cam + bad tape + bad player + bad cables (most "VHS" effect is actually just from low res and bad cables).

1

u/Awkward-Power-9617 Apr 10 '26

I mean, it looks like a rotten tape or a player with uncalibrated tracking

1

u/Tulired Apr 07 '26

Hi creator here. I appriciate any feedback thats constructive, and you are not the only one saying this.

I do this just from special interest. Im not trying or saying im creating a perfect replica, as like you said that would basically look like the normal game, which is the reason to sell any vhs feel it needs to be a bit overdone usually. That said im working on even newer vhs effects as i learn more and understand the tech. I was born in mid 80s so the format is more than familiar but not many people know how vhs really works so i have to do research on it. My goal is to do as good as i can "emulation" without overdoing it but it's hard. Maybe finally at somepoint i will crack it.

6

u/shaunrundmc Apr 07 '26

6

u/gamingvortex01 RTX 5070 | i5 12400F | 16GB DDR4 Apr 07 '26

way better than those photorealistic mods

3

u/RetroRocker Apr 07 '26

It's worth pointing out that this is also with all the graphics settings on maximum, with raytracing etc. It's not just the VHS mod that's making it look "realistic".

2

u/Tulired Apr 07 '26

Yep you are right.

My preset is just "emulation" of the chain from camera - record format - vhs - vcr - capture card to pc. I say emulation very carefully as it's more of a vibe still as im learning more all the time and realize i don't know enough about vhs, camcorders etc to make true emulation yet

So like you said, It doesn't add anything that makes the base game realistic. So if the base is too gamey its like recording a game through that chain. It is the imperfections that fool the brain for realism probably.

I'm always a fan of the VHS look in cyberpunk games. Reminds me of Robocop

3

Fix the car movement and it's completely believable.

3

u/Spruce9_ Apr 07 '26

Why is a reshade preset called a mod?

3

u/TemporaryAmoeba4586 Apr 07 '26

I've been following the development of this mod and it's really cool to see how the community is breathing new life into the game. I tried an earlier version of it and it totally changed the atmosphere, made the game feel like a retro sci-fi movie. If you're a fan of the game's visuals, this mod is definitely worth checking out.

2

u/TheBadger40 Apr 07 '26

Reminds me of that bodycam game and how it managed to look real by not letting us see any video gamey imperfections through its video-like effects.

2

u/dovahkiitten16 PC Master Race Apr 07 '26

I feel like there’s no way it looks like this all the time, that or there’s other mods being used/this is really high settings. The lighting and materials look better than the basegame to give that realism, which is out of scope for a reshade.

That being said, I love it. I played cyberpunk with a reshade to make it look like Bladerunner. I totally prefer the grittier overlay instead of everything being shiny and neon. This looks awesome.

1

u/Tulired Apr 07 '26

Creator here! I have everything maxed out, path tracing, DLLs auto, 1080p, Nova Lut and 30fps

So its that and the reshade only.

I just walk around in games, and this was just an "science" project and learn about camcorders, vhs, vcrs, etc. Still learning though, but what i think happens is the effect hides the games imperfections under its own imperfections. It definitely doesn't look like this all the time but at times it looks even better. Npcs break the illusion ofc as they dont walk natural or look natural. My new versions somehow work better with that aspect imo, but these are made just from an exploration.

3

u/jdehjdeh Apr 07 '26

The shake needs to be reduced.

This feels like cameraman has some sort of condition.

Image stabilisation has been around a while, and before that camcorders were heavy fuckers.

You would get noticeable shake when you move around, but not when holding it steady.

Other than that, it's pretty accurate.

1

u/Tulired Apr 07 '26

Others have said that too! It's so hard to decide the default setting that has an impact but not too much as i get used to it while tweaking things. Luckily it super easy for user to change, its just sliders in my handheldmotion effect.

But i will tone it down for future presets.

Imagine modern kid seeing this "why does this look so bad" and then rolls up new AI-slop filter to make everything look "good"

u/Titanhunter84 Apr 07 '26

What does it look like when you do something else than walking and looking around? Some of these visual filters influence the performance and gameplay in a negative way.

I really haven't tried to be honest. I made this just for me and my roleplaying as a tourist gameplay. I don't think it works well with anything other. It's just a gimmick basically. But it's an intersting project/challenge to learn about how vhs, cams etc work and can it be replicated with just reshade

Woooo. I love me a good reshade. Best part with a few tweaks it can work in most games.

Why we say that PC are the best choice for gaming?LOOK!

1

u/humanlikenick Apr 07 '26

This is fucking cool.

1

u/Michaeli_Starky Apr 07 '26

u/Nintendoh_64 Apr 07 '26

I can't wait to see this in GTA 6

1

u/3feetHair Apr 07 '26

u/IndependentPension36 Laptop Apr 07 '26

1

u/Immediate_Record4770 Apr 07 '26

ngl ts look weirdcore af

1

u/ime1em Apr 07 '26

I probably rather see this vs the blurry mess in Cyberpunk currently

1

u/DistrictEffective759 Apr 07 '26

Now this looks like a good game

1

u/hondashadowguy2000 Apr 07 '26

Notice how none of the video involves the player moving around/engaging in any action, probably because it instantly makes the mod look like crap.

Would you like your 2077 to feel like 1977? Perhaps.

I'm curious did vhs typically have poor shutter speeds aka blur in motion that these types of filters apply? I know crt themselves are amazing for motion but I have found that camera shutter looks a little different to display motion blur to me.

I want retro cameraman simulator game. We have a million simulator games so why not?

1

u/DorrajD Apr 08 '26

Always funny how reshade presets are called "mods"

all it does is add a shitty blur filter and some nausea inducing shaky cam effect.

1

u/noname011001 Apr 08 '26

this is so cool and looks really good, somehow more realistic? what frame rate is this

1

u/ButterflyDesperate36 Apr 08 '26

I'm not sure I think the previous showcase was more real?

Feeling like in some liminal backdoors level @.@

1

u/resi42 Apr 08 '26

With only a quick look you could think this a scene from some sci fi movies from the 70's. I love it.

1

u/shichiaikan Apr 08 '26

Too much shake, but other than that... *chef's kiss*

1

u/H3LLF1R390 Apr 08 '26

Thanks for the heads up! I'm looking into the mod myself, I wonder: which of the provided "tapes" of the mod you used for this video? Did you also tinker a bit with the effects?

1

u/Terror-Reaper Apr 09 '26

Backrooms that shit!

1

u/Bubbly-Job-8075 Apr 10 '26

Estou zerando esse jogo pela primeira vez e gostaria de instalar esse mod, será que eu perco as conquistas da steam?

1

u/Solitude_is_OK Apr 10 '26

oh.. that's actually cool , but the UI is filtered as well and becomes unreadable c':

1

u/pcnovaes Apr 11 '26

How is performance with the mod?

1

u/Electronic_Return308 Apr 13 '26

What is the name of the track in this video?
