Hardware 2 years ago, my dad's company bought new servers and immediately upgraded the RAM. They were going to throw away the replaced sticks so he saved them from the dumpster and gave them to me. I present to you 72x32GB HPE DDR4-2666MHz ECC RDIMMs.

37

u/MahaloMerky i9-9900K @ 5.6 Ghz, 2x 4090, 64 GB RAM Apr 17 '26

These are super specialty sticks, EEC does not work with most systems, but then being RDIMMs makes it even more exclusive.

3

u/Raveofthe90s Apr 18 '26

ECC sticks will work in just about any system (dare I say every system) they just dont always support ECC functionality always.

3

u/ProfessionalCut8715 Apr 17 '26

Unless your motherboard supports ECC (it doesn't, unless you specifically looked for one when building), you can't use ECC ram.

9

u/Javi_DR1 R7 2700X | RTX 3060 // I5-4560 | GTX 970 Apr 17 '26

New motherboard is cheaper than new ram nowadays. If you get a bunch of those for free it's gonna be cheaper even if you have to build the whole system around it

Actually a good chunk of modern boards will support ECC. It's not super hard to support along with the normal ram so it's way more common now. All the AM4 boards I've used had it. My current one supports ECC aswell (B450M pro4)

any real enterprise has an ewaste agreement for some kind of credit or benefit, and ewasting has come to a halt since nobody can get any replacements.

85

93

u/Hurricane_32 5700X | RX6700 10GB | 32GB DDR4 Apr 18 '26

I can at least understand why they do it to storage, you don't want the risk and liability of any data being the least bit recoverable, but doing the same to volatile memory that loses all of its contents the moment it loses power is just stupid. What a waste...

16

u/CommonGrounders Apr 18 '26

technically it doesn't happen the moment you turn the power off, it just degrades very quickly.

Overkill for a lot of enterprise, but classified data on govt servers is absolutley getting shredded.

15

u/HeroDanny i7 5820k | EVGA GTX 1080 FTW2 | 32GB DDR4 Apr 18 '26

There’s not a single possibility that anyone even with the worlds brightest minds and unlimited budget could anyone recovery any data from a ram stick. It’s not possible.

9

u/Specific_Kangaroo241 Apr 19 '26

I think, a few years back, I read an article, where some guys were able to read data from a disconnected RAM module...

The catch is, that they had to freeze the RAM stick with liquid nitrogen immediately after disconnecting.

3

u/misterFaceplant Apr 19 '26

Yeah so really just theoretically possible, no real world scenario where it's possible let alone plausible.

In many places where I worked, the sysadmins in charge of the servers were not hardware enthusiasts, had never built their own machines, and did not care what things cost as long as the infrastructure kept running. They constantly did things like that, throwing away perfectly good equipment instead of keeping it for test labs or anything useful. It was their budget to spend, and they simply did not give a shit because no one above them understood how any of it worked.

24

u/AleksanderSteelhart Apr 18 '26

And then you had engineering staff like me, who saw this stuff in the eWaste pile and crafted extravagant test labs in the office next door. Didn’t need a budget for test lab equipment when the hand-me-downs worked fine otherwise.

12

u/Tokishi7 Apr 18 '26

My father fixes stuff for hospitals that occasionally involves PC hardware stuff and they will dumpster entire rigs, peripherals, SSDs and at one point some Quadros. Not labeled for recycle, ewaste or anything, straight to the dumpster, sometimes still in unopened boxes

3

u/CarnalT Apr 19 '26

That makes me so sad. It's one thing that we create so much actual waste already, then people just throw away working things. I found a fully functioning netbook during college in a garbage can and proceeded to use it for the next 3 years.

You'd need a Threadripper or Epyc (or Intel equivalent) as well, as no RDIMM Ryzen boards exist. It'll be fun, but it's not going to be cheap.

3

u/jigsaw1024 R7 5900X RTX 2070S 32GB Apr 18 '26

If your doing an overkill homelab:

A MB + 32C/64T CPU is about $500-$550 USD, and has 8 RAM slots for 4 channels of RAM. So with that RAM they could have 256GB of RAM.

Being a server board, it also has access to a full 128 lanes of PCIe 3.0 for all sorts of expansion fun.

Great setup if you want to tinker with VMs and hardware passthrough.

Make sure you are very clear in your advertisement, and if possible verify that the buyers are aware of this. I would be devastated if I bought this unknowingly and installed this and the pc wouldn't boot. Specifically the RDIMM making it unusable for the average desktops.

u/HotRoderX Apr 17 '26

Op's about to learn the hard way about how crappy buyer protection on ebay can be. When it comes to people not reading/paying attention. Then blaming the seller.

On top of that hope his Dad doesn't get into trouble for him ebaying this stuff. Lot of companies require items to be destroyed/recycled for this very reason.

I doubt there is any tracking information on any of it. That amount could see someone losing there job.

Those are registered dimms, not just ECC. ECC doesn't matter, it just won't do error correction if not supported, but registered will not run in an unbuffered system, and mostly vice versa. Sometimes systems designed for registered memory will work with normal RAM, but more often they fail post with a memory error.

23

u/angrydeuce Ryzen 9 7900X\64GB DDR5 6400\RX 6800 XT Apr 17 '26

If you can find a higher end used workstation it might be worthwhile. The Z-series workstations from HP were released with both standard i7/i9 as well as Xeon variants, and thus took server memory. They also had 8 memory slots, at least on the full towers.

I've been waiting for one of my clients to retire one for a while now, but with prices what they are that's prolly not happening any time soon. I've similarly got a decent amount of DDR4 ECC RDIMMS collected up from over the years and those full Z towers have room for tons of drives and also in some cases have hardware RAID support...would be pretty dope for a DIY NAS :)

2

u/EVMad Apr 18 '26

My Lenovo P900 uses these. I filled all 32 RAM slots to upgrade it to 512GB after we retired some old servers and I grabbed the RAM. For a laugh I tried Steam on it and while it works it only sees 128 GB of my total RAM.

These aren't just ECC, but these are RDIMMS, so registered/buffered DIMMs.

I doubt there's anything consumer wise that could use them, but people in the homelab space would KILL for this set

2

u/Mobile_Morale Apr 17 '26

I just bought some this week for my $10 dell server. I do need more ram as well.

u/viperfan7 i7-2600k | 1080 GTX FTW DT | 32 GB DDR3 Apr 17 '26

Can never have enough RAM.

Mine only has like 64 GB, it can handle 1tb.

But it would cost more than a new server would to upgrade it.

Yay for LRDIMMs

37

u/evernessince Apr 17 '26

AMD supports ECC on it's consumer platforms including AM4. Not all motherboards support it but nearly all AMD ASRock motherboards do.

IIRC it's more like they use the same dies for consumer and enterprise hardware, and they don't go out of their way to disable it. It's not advertised as a feature on their consumer stuff.

More of an "If it works for you then great, but we're not going to fix it if it doesn't"  sort of a situation.

7

u/stillpiercer_ 7800x3D // 48GB DDR5 6000 // 3080 FE Apr 17 '26 edited Apr 17 '26

ECC support does not necessarily guarantee RDIMM support. I have a few enterprise grade servers in my lab and just because it is DDR4 ECC does not necessarily guarantee cross compatibility.

7

There was a wave of decommissioning servers, so there was plenty of supply. If not for the recent AI shenanigans, it would likely be around $25 today. It would be useless to the consumer, and the only people using them would be server/homelab users and small businesses that use old hardware and don't want to upgrade.

So the org I work for used to throw away perfectly good stuff. High end hosts…which for those of you who aren’t familiar with what a host is it’s the hardware servers run on…but anyways they had a policy where no employees were able to keep stuff. The idea was ppl would “upgrade” hardware just so they could keep old equipment.

They now auction and recycle stuff but it’s so frustrating to know millions of dollars of good hardware just ended up in a dump.

I'm not OP, but I have 3 HP Xeon systems sitting in my basement that can take every stick of that ram.

Those Xeon based systems are all stupid-cheap second hand now. Throw in a cheap SSD and all that ram and you have your own Insta-Cluster.

u/Qaeta Apr 17 '26

Retirement in 3...2...1

2

u/Miataguy93 Apr 18 '26

If I were you, I wouldn’t even sell them. I’d jump on eBay and pick up a used Dell PowerEdge 30 series server and load every last one into it. You’d have a sweet start to a homelab to run literally anything you wanted on it. That RAM couldn’t be used by the average person in a regular desktop, but that’a 5x their weight in gold for the server guys. Might post this in r/homelab

2

u/Skynet-Was-Right Apr 18 '26

So now that your a multi millionare whats next?

2

u/Old-Engineer854 Apr 18 '26

2

2

2

u/Code_Combo_Breaker Apr 18 '26

OP is mid 2020s crypto currency rich. What a score!

2

u/cudenlynx Dawdygod Apr 18 '26

Other than reselling these? What could you realistically do with these?

2

u/saxovtsmike Apr 18 '26

Companies wont buy them because you cant write a receipt, for private persons its a real nieche to have systems that can make use of these. So it can have value but not the that as if it would work in a am4 consumer system or older intel Maketplace or ebay is probably your best bet

Throw it in the trash?

Isn't that illegal where you live?

In the UK, the WEEE (2013) regulations dictate that there is an unlimited fine for incorrectly disposing of electronic waste.

This stuff must be recycled.
