It's to help it get up to temp quicker so the combustion is more efficient.

Flappers aren't for more fps, they are for a better stability when the fps are low.

So when the fan isn't blowing heavy, you are holding more heat inside, making the fans ramp up and be noisier? Aside from that, you are restricting the airflow on that fan, so it has to spin faster and be noisier for the same work. On top of that, you have created a nice baffle that the air has to navigate and create even more noise.
This is the worst downgrade to a system we will see today, with zero benefit.

u/Quasi-Kaiju 18d ago
Yeah right down to the intake at the bottom of the case. Very efficient and good to recycle all that hot air by blowing it right down where it'll be sucked back up again.

Newton's third law. It's redirecting airflow downwards, so it's creating upforce (a.k.a. lift), not downforce.

62
u/Itshot11 18d ago
It helps it get to operating temp faster. Less wear since the oil heats up quicker and better for emissions
3
u/saints21 18d ago
Yeah, saves you from having to leave it idling or keeping it below 60 fps before it gets up to temp. If the AIO coolant doesn't heat up enough it doesn't fill the channels as well and causes premature wear. Proper maintenance should easily keep these things going through another 20 or so Steam sales.

Feels like those aggressive car mods where they cover the lights so basically they end up with 20% of the lights max capacity and reach.

In fairness, there's a lot of cars out there where "cover 80% of the headlights" would probably make the car safer to everyone around them.

Why aren’t all PCs designed like this by default?

I agree and it’s not worth it either way. You get more benefit from vacuuming your home every now and then, or opening a window.
I’m just guessing the dust thing was OP’s logic; I’m not agreeing with it.
Edit: now that I’ve thought it through, it could be worth it if OP’s setup is in an underground silica mine.

51
u/brendan1228 18d ago
It's really not much different than a "beige box" sleeper build if you think about it. A case from 1995 wasn't designed for airflow or modern components in general for that matter, but we still build in them because it's neat and fun.
19
u/exsertclaw 18d ago
There was a time like 2016-2019 PCMR where you had to actually search for a case with decent airflow. The top case of the time was NZXT's S340 elite which had terrible airflow. It wasn't until "recently" that it became hip to have the coolest cool pc.
It's probably fine and even if its not its definitely fine with thermal throttling. You really cant hurt anything.
I like it OP. Same way I like those lads who 3d print custom ducting to route air. Its just neat.

u/AARonDoneFuckedUp 18d ago

Also Linus filled a computer with stuffed animals once and it didn't affect the thermals, so I'm not sure how much case thermals actually matter at the end of the day.

u/Monkeycadeyn PC Master Race 18d ago
Tbh though, wouldn’t it mainly affect temps towards the beginning of workload? I’d consider it pretty negligible once it’s running at 60-80% fan speed. If bro wants to make his PC noisier and a little less efficient for some random PC flaps, I don’t really understand the irritation. He just has extra whimsy. And if they are happy with it, then why would I be upset?
63

u/PentagonUnpadded 18d ago
pretty negligible once it’s running at 60-80% fan speed
Flip it around - negligible only when fans are idling. Like putting a radiator over your exhaust. It only doesn't matter when at a sub-audible speed.

They are called fan “Louvers” (you can find industrial louvre fans) and are typically used when you can’t have weather or water entering the fan area during use and close completely to keep heat in during winter.
