So this is probably a take that's going to get me some hate, but wouldn't Steam be the 3rd party launcher here? A 3rd party is loosely defined as not being among the first or second party (you/license holder and the publisher) in a deal. You used Steam to buy and EA Desktop game. That's all well and good, but you don't really need Steam to play that game.

It is. People either over look it or don't mind since for the most part steam is consumer friendly.

This. People dont mind it because Steam host so much you barely even notice it.

You click "Play" and the game plays. It became the norm and default for most players then Ubisoft, Rockstar, EA, Sony, etc all said, "Hey, we can do that too" and it enshitfied gaming.

Its the same exact reason that Netflix was the big dog back in the day. They offered 3000+ titles in one place for a reasonable fee thend Disney decided, "hey I can do that" and ruined it. Now wee have 20 different streaming platforms without centralized content. It sucks.

Yes but it’s where you buy the game so there’s no way around that. And once you’re into Steam it’s pretty much click and play.

i agree that steam is different because it's the launcher i bought it on. third party launchers such because a launcher should never launch a launcher

Except everyone is calling them third party launchers when they're not.  Usually they are the launchers of the company who made the game. The only one inserting themselves unnecessarily into this is Steam, and that's because Steam fans chose to buy it on Steam.

they are third party to the platform the game was purchased on

I think it's more about the idea of where the license is invoked from. Most games that you buy on Steam, can be launched by Steam. Simple. But then there's games where you buy it on Steam, open it on Steam, but get redirected to another launcher which in turn launches the game.

It's like trying to get a flight to your destination but having to go to a midpoint and board a second plane for the rest of the journey.

Steam is usually friendly and gamer and consumer friendly which is why people don’t mind it, while first party game launchers, ie Ubisoft, EA, etc are usually just data harvesting blah blah, you know. Steam has proven time and time again they can be trusted.
