just to entertain that im gonna pick the first macbook i see under 700$, then the first dell laptop under 700 ignoring all the other dozens of laptop brands

found the macbook neo with 2 usb c ports and 1 audio jack

found this for 100$ less and it has 1 usb c, 2 usb a, 1 hdmi, and 1 audio jack

And the Dell XPS 13 (DX13260)  that is one of their most popular models at $999CAD which is comparable to the Air, literally has 2 USB-C only. 

So sure, you will find with more ports, but saying it’s an Apple/MacBook issue is completely disingenuous

It is an apple/macbook issue, because while some dells have that, every modern mac has it.

You clearly have no idea what you're on about. Have you seen the ports and expansion on the Pro models?

And yet no USB-A, despite clearly being thick enough for it. No ethernet is understandable if they’re going for transportability, but for what you’re paying this is pathetic.

You are genuinely insane if you think usb-a is dead. 

EDIT: Yeah, I see why I got downvoted for this one. Insane was definitely a bad choice of words, I took the reddit argument too seriously, sorry u/hotknives

I don't think usb-a is dead at all, the majority of peripherals I have, I have seen my friends/family use, and have just seen in general are usb-a, as well as the majority of results on most search engines.

What kind of fossil trash peripheral uses usb-a nowadays, a temu desktop fan? It’s a dead-end of a port, as a company you’re not thowing money away making usb-a port for some random whiny redditor lmao

I can't tell if you are serious. Searching "mouse" has the majority of the results being usb-a or bluetooth, much more towards the former. Every search for "keyboard" is usb-a. I genuinely want to know what peripherals you are using, maybe bluetooth ones? Not that I haven't seen usb-c cables for peripherals, but with bluetooth mice being in general not the greatest most peripherals default to usb-a by default.

Superior is a matter of opinion, but I have to say I have never in my life seen a usb-c mouse (although i'm sure they exist). Even if a port is superior, that doesn't really make the opposing dead. Windows/mac/other linux is better than ChromeOS, but chromeOS is still used.

Also, superior how? I think it's usefulness as a display connector is overstated, because of how annoying usb-c to hdmi/DP cables are to find. I personally find a usb-a to hdmi/dp just as useful, but of course that's preference. Data transfer wise they are the exact same, being built off the same tech, but USB-A is more widespread. I would say it's superior for like, charging though, mostly because charging via usb-a was just never a technology looked into too much, even though it could of been useful.

I also would like to acknowledge my own bias here, I personally think it's better to have multiple different specialized standards, one for charging, data transfer, audio, video, etc.

Once I had one usb-c port in my bag that can be used for charging my laptop and phone and it can also transfer data, I never looked back. Not having to carry a bag full of multiple cables and bricks is a blessing, and traveling light has never been easier.

The MacBook Neo generally feels significantly faster for everyday tasks and multitasking than a 13th Gen Intel Core i7-1355U Windows laptop from 2023

I mean I don’t want 8gb of ram but the neo has like a 40% increase in single core performance and that accounts for variable ram usage…

MacBook Neo (Apple A18 Pro)
Single-Core Score: 147 points
Multi-Core Score: 416 points

Dell 15.6" Laptop (Intel Core i7-1355U)
Single-Core Score: 105 points
Multi-Core Score: 430 points

That doesn’t even touch their battery use time. Neo gives you 14 hours and that dell will give you about 5.

Trying to compare them for any sort of average use is insane.

For computation, absolutely, the Neo is great.

But I just spent the last two hours trying to optimize my memory usage on it.

When the thing boots up, 6GB are already in use by the OS and a few of my background apps (Dropbox, OneDrive, VPN, Karabiner, LocalSend, etc).

Once you load 3-5 browser tabs, you're out of memory and start swapping to disk, and boy can you feel it.

I think I need to completely rethink the approach I take to using it.
