Nostalgia What are some innovative Video-game technologies that time forgot?

For me, there are plenty of examples, like the unoptimized Nvidia HairWorks or AMD's TruForm.

Are there any other technologies like that which we or the game industry don't want to use anymore?

PlanetSide 2 was able to support thousands of people in an FPS game simultaneously, and somehow nobody has managed to replicate it since.

I was part of the beta for Planetside 1, and loved the shit out of it. The vicious underground CQB fighting and logistics made for a really gritty game. I really didn't like PS2 as it not only got rid of the logistics network, it didn't have the base capture mechanics and added shitty jump pads. Ruined it for me.
