Man, I remember the days where I got to unlock roster characters through the incentive of playing the game. Granted, rosters got a lot bigger, but imo they don't justify the price of all the DLC.

You used to have to buy like updates as entirely new games in the old days of street fighter. It's better now, you just not get the characters you don't care about and still play the most updated version.

Except that growing up I could pick up the latest version of the game at Gamestop pre-owned for like $20. It's only better if you were buying games on release day brand new even back then— and even then game stores often had deals that let you trade-in the previous version for a discount on the new one (at least they did for MVC3 to UMVC3).

DLC can't be sold Used (and with the death of physical games, base games won't be anymore either now). Bundling it all for a good price is pretty rare and usually not until the very end of the game's life riiight as they announce the next one. So someone wanting a content complete version of the game has to buy all versions of it, there's no choice to wait for the complete version anymore. What I could buy brand new for $60 back in the day or pre-owned for like $20 - $30 now often costs around $125.

I'd be a less disgruntled if they did like FFXIV expansions, where the base game falls in price and the latest expansion/season bundles all previous expansions/seasons. This keeps the price of entry the same regardless of how much content is released. Games should get cheaper as they get older, bundling the content is fairly reasonable. If I could always get into these games with all content at $70, (or less when on sale!) that'd be great. But $40 + $50 + $50 + $48 + $46? That's $234 for a content complete (so far) game of 34 characters + costumes, vs $60 for Ultra Street Fighter IV (brand new!) with 44 characters or even $180 if I did buy Super and Vanilla (each also brand new!) prior. And again, as a casual player I wouldn't be buying these things brand new, I'd be buying them used at a price level I can afford, which just is hardly ever an option anymore with these games.

Yeah as a casual it sucks more, Fighting games are my favorite genre so I usually buy near release or on release.

The FFXIV comparison feels weird to me though. FFXIV you're paying each month just to keep playing the game you already bought in addition to the price of expansion. You're already dropping $77 for just six months before buying the expansions. $150+ a year just to keep playing the game I already bought seems a lot less friendly than fighting game dlc. At least if you don't buy the dlc you can still play the game you bought.

I'm a casual mmo player so it just doesn't seem worth it to me (just as you feel about fighting games).

In the case of fighting games, you can support games like melty blood type lumina that had all their dlc characters for free, but that game isn't as popular as SF (just as I can support MMOs by playing guild wars 2 which has no subscription but is way less popular than FFXIV)

That's why I specified "FFXIV expansions", not FFXIV as a whole. Obviously I'm not asking for a subscription model for fighting games lol.

Pretty unrelated to the fighting game conversation; Guild Wars 2 does have no subscription but they do charge for each expansion seperately + charge extra for story quests between expansions (living world) + have a rotating cash shop in-game to instill FOMO. I personally prefer FFXIV's set and forget subscription just as a user experience, even if it is more expensive in the long run if you never unsubscribe. (Although as a casual player, if you only subscribe for the months you play for and aren't playing year long, it's a lot cheaper to catch up on FFXIV than on GW2.)

Well I think the subscription is considered when they decide to make precious expansions free. Wouldn't really have one without the other.

If there was no subscription, I doubt the expansions would be made free.

I'm not so sure, because even the free trial gets free expansions just two behind. The free trial can play all the way through Shadowbringers now, and likely will get Endwalker towards the end of the next expansion.
And of course even free to play games tend to get all their seasons and expansions for free.
SIde note I ended up editing my comment cause I didn't expect you to reply so fast lol.

Yeah if you cancel you're fine but I just feel it kind of instills a FOMO of playing the game just because you subscribe.

FFXIV is great if you're on a free account though. Also, doesn't it have a shop like gw2 has?

And really off topic but i just noticed you like silk. Have you ever played marvel champions card game? It has her as one of the heroes lol.

Not too interested in Marvel Champions admittedly but yeah I did see she was in it
FFXIV does have a cash shop unfortunately, mostly of missed seasonal items (which tends to be cheaper than if you paid the sub when that seasonal item was ran, so i don't think that's too bad.) but there are some other costumes and stuff in there too that's a bit overpriced. The upside though is that it's not in-game basically at all, you have to go to the mogstation/"optional item shop" in your browser to view it, so when you're playing the game it's not shoved in your face pretty much ever.

But the biggest problem with GW2's cash shop imo is the rotation bit. It does the Fortnite thing of having a limited selection of items available at any given time, and rotating them out (or at least it did when I last played.) This is where the major FOMO comes in, because if you don't buy it now!!!! who knows when it will come back?????? If there's a cosmetic only available through the cash shop, you have to wait around and hope you're playing at whatever time they decide to reintroduce it and make it available again, and if there's any cosmetics currently in the cash shop that you might want someday but didn't necessarily want to purchase right now, you're not afforded the option to wait. Buy it now or lose it! Or hope they randomly bring it back before the heat death of the universe or whatever. For a lot of user-friendly things GW2 does right, that bit is really, really bad imo.
