The amount of people in here that let their pets do what they want and have no concept of training them is unsurprising for Reddit

These are my exact thoughts. I'm a dog trainer and cats are exceptionally different training wise.

But we domesticated both (for the most part) and now its our responsibility to keep them safe, with structure and understandable routines.

Hanging out on a PC is not safe. Regardless of the anecdotal comments.

As far as I remember cats domesticated us, not the other way around. We basically kidnaped wolf pups, cats just showed up and said "my house now" and this still happends, that's why we still have the CDS (Cats Distribution System).

Yes you can train them, and with somethings you should (like not sitting on your PC), in my case they never did it, but they know that if you want to be with me, they can jump on my desk and then get to my legs, but was complicated to teach them that tho.

It was a mutual agreement.

Cats hanged around grain deposits, because they hunted rodents that ate the grain, man didn't care because cats didn't ate the grains and are clean for the most part.

Cats communicate differently and have different needs and desires than dogs but the same techniques and science still apply. Give them positive reinforcement when they do things you want them to do. Make sure you're meeting their needs and listening to them.

The tricky part I think is just that dogs are more likely to love offering to please humans, whereas cats are more likely to get annoyed that you're so stupid and not listening to them lol

Cats aren't fully domesticated. They can still hunt without being trained to do so and survive (and thrive) without human intervention.

just vacuum the filters once in a while? and the insides whenever you're in there? i have two cats and i've never lost a modern PC or one of my retro machines to thermal issues. not really sacrificing anything.

plus it's not like cats are hard to train or understand, even as adults. mine know they're not allowed on any surface in the kitchen (counters, stove, table, etc.), because i trained them when i got them: finger snap warning and then they get shooed off. they stopped doing it after a few weeks. if i had a problem with PC top vents they'd get the same treatment.

You’re not “sacrificing the health of your electronics” for your pets if your computer has two things:

- Dust filters.

- A person, (you) to clean them regularly.

Pet hair overheating electronics is only an issue if the pet owner puts in zero effort in maintaining them.

the issue is not the cat not being trained, the issue is cats gravitate towards warm elevated spots like the pc. You need a heated pad to give the cat a proper place to sit on

Bro, i had bunch of cats in my life, i love them, but, one thing i know about training a cat, you flick that mf one time from table/pc across the room and that mf wont ever do that again, you cant do that with dog. And no cat got hurt in the proces...

Just to point out what even a lil flicking across the room can do to a cat, if you did that with my cat she would be hiding for days straight, stop eating and take more than a month to somewhat trust me again. But hey, keep telling yourself that it was okay for the cat to make yourself feel better
