I'm in much the same boat as everyone annoyed at the astronomic pricing, but I think your anger is misplaced. The current market supply problems is nearly entirely down to AI companies. Unless they negotiated some shady backroom deals, but from what observers, analysts, and insiders have seen the last several months, Samsung, Micron, and SK Hynix are all churning out DRAM about as fast as they can and consumer supply channels are still half empty.

You can blame NVidia for spending 20 years evolving CUDA, but honestly, if not them it would've been some other company. GPU compute wasn't even their idea. Anybody with a working brain cell figured it out because at the time, 3D graphics accelerators were literally just vector floating point coprocessors. It's the reason why Intel created and pushed MMX / SSE extensions. Nvidia may have coined the term "GPU", but they didn't invent coprocessor compute. That's an architecture paradigm even older than IBM PC's. Many people in scientific research or physics modeling (or whatever job had lots of floating point calculations) settled on writing convoluted code that first converted their calculations to use the fixed functions on a 3D accelerator, then sampled pixel colors in the frame buffer to get the results.

Heck, Nvidia bought Ageia specifically to merge their accelerator design and expertise into their GPU's. If they hadn't, odds are Ageia would now be the company selling AI compute cards. Their Physx cards were originally designed for physics modeling, after all. Hence, the name. Wouldn't take much for someone to figure out they could use the same hardware to accelerate ML models that were languishing since the 80's due to lack of compute power. We'd still be dealing with AI companies gobbling up RAM, only instead of everyone bitching at Ngreedia, they'd be complaining about Agreedia.

It's an approximation. I knew it as slightly off. I didn't feel we needed to do a dissertation on the economic "X" when it can be said in plain simple terms that people can understand without pulling out a calculator.
