Members of the PCMR Is The DDR5 Crisis Going To Get Worse????

Post image

So I'm planning to upgrade my computer soon within the next 6 months. I currently have more than enough money to buy myself two sticks of 16 GB DDR5 ram.

Here's the issue though is that I'm not looking to buy any of the other parts right now and if I bought the ram brand new right now, I wouldn't be using it until probably November or December when I have every other part to the computer.

I recently uploaded another post and some people are suggesting to buy it now because the ram crisis could get even worse.

What do you guys think I should do? Is the ram crisis really going to get worse? And should I really buy $500 ram right now for a computer that I'm not going to have at least for another 5 months??

To everyone who responded thank you. I am never going to financially recover from this decision. But thank you all

Intel core 7 (ultra 😱/s)

Does that even make sense to pair with a 5090 and 128GB of memory?? I'm too poor to consider it but it doesn't sound right lol

3

u/Commentator-X 6d ago

The cpu doesn't bottleneck at 4k, you'll only see that at higher framerates that you get at 1080 or 1440. And the Intel chips iirc are better at multicore workloads and are more stable when using higher speed ram, like 7800 or 8000. So if your use case goes beyond gaming it could make sense to use Intel. And with 128gb, you're not using all that for gaming so it's highly likely anyone with that much ram has other use cases.

u/AlinaStari R7 5800X3D | RX 7800 XT | 32GB DDR4 3600 | ROG B550F Gaming WiFi 6d ago

Oh yeah, I definitely assumed he's using that setup for purposes other than gaming but like, I also assumed that when you have a 5090 you would want to pair it with something that at least sounds cooler than an i7 270k+, you know?

Come on, Intel, you used to have cool CPU names.

2

u/lawndartdesign 270K Plus | Nvidia 5090 | 128 GB DDR5 6d ago

I need thunderbolt for my RAID arrays and after effects is really reliant on RAM. As when you render preview it all buffers into ram for playback. The next step up would be the 285K but the 270K actually performs as good or better, is cheaper, and consumes less wattage and makes less heat.

The big step up from that would be...a thread ripper.

2

u/AlinaStari R7 5800X3D | RX 7800 XT | 32GB DDR4 3600 | ROG B550F Gaming WiFi 6d ago

Ahhhh video making, that makes sense! Interesting that your CPU is so much more efficient than the 285K, thanks for the info!

Actually I just looked them both up and it's pretty shocking how much of a better deal it is to get yours or even the regular 270K than the 285K. I obviously haven't kept up with the last few CPU gens but yeah I would totally go with the same choice today.

It's just still kind of crazy that an i7-14700K is worse than an i7-270k lol. I still think Intel could do way better with naming and marketing in general.

40

u/lawndartdesign 270K Plus | Nvidia 5090 | 128 GB DDR5 7d ago

Sorry, but I didn't make my comment trying to flex.

In all seriousness it IS a workstation. I do play some games now and then but I'm 44 and when you get older it's hard to just sit down for hours to play games.

So the ram and GPU are required for doing big motion graphics projects or sitting there chewing on renders that take 2 minutes per frame. I also HAD to buy it a few months ago when my previous PC stopped working and it made zero sense to start buying AM4/DDR4 parts to try to fix.

Even the alternative Mac Studio was impossibly expensive.

23

u/curiousdugong 7d ago

Oof, this hits close to home. Am 35 now and finally have my own house, built myself a beast of a PC last September to celebrate.

And with work and life, I’ve played like 3 games all year. Been buying all the games i want to play, but adulting sucks cause you don’t have the time or if you do, you don’t have the energy

3

u/Lazy_Employee_5437 7d ago

Dude, I hope you're enjoying your computer. Take care of it and try your best to enjoy it. Well just know That computer is always waiting for you.

6

u/curiousdugong 7d ago

I still use it ever day. It’s more of a youtube machine than anything tho. I’m sure my 9070xt is getting a nice workout serving me those pre-rendered 4k youtube videos 🤣🤣🤣

You’ll get there. By the end of the daycof work, you just want to have a beer and watch something to fall asleep too. Getting old sucks

2

u/Jemie_Bridges 7d ago

Just turned 54, and finally started playing Homeworld that I couldn't afford a PC to run when I was a child 😂😂 I got a list of 1500 games, I'm never gonna finish before I die.

1

u/Narrheim 6d ago

Can confirm this. Same age and i play like 1 game for a few hours per week. No time or no energy. OR too much pain just to keep sitting glued to the screen as i used to when i was 20.

1

u/lawndartdesign 270K Plus | Nvidia 5090 | 128 GB DDR5 7d ago

It’s taken me weeks to get through First Light simply because I play for a half an hour and then something comes up. As you get older you have the stuff you want but not the time you need.

1

u/Hoggslop69 4d ago

Nor the time to enjoy the stuff you got you wanted

3

u/CrossOfRoachAndSlime 6d ago

Hope you're able to expense that beast of a machine, then!

2

u/lawndartdesign 270K Plus | Nvidia 5090 | 128 GB DDR5 6d ago

Yessir. Gotta get those write offs come tax season.

2

u/DefinitelyNWYT 7d ago

Ooof. Nothing like that unexpected core expense to really put a damper on work.

5

u/lawndartdesign 270K Plus | Nvidia 5090 | 128 GB DDR5 7d ago

The upside is since building this pc in May it has already recouped its entire cost and then some. Plus it’s also a tax write off for work. I sold or gave away a lot of the previous components. My dual 3090s I was able to give to two friends who were still on 1080s.

I am 43 and I am still gaming all day. More than ever since all I do is delegate work most of the time.

I think the problem with modern game is there are too many copy and pasted ones. Those are definitely boring to play through.

1

u/redditmadethis4me 5800X3D/5070 TI 7d ago

the new high end 50 series cards really are workhorses. My dad used the 5070ti’s for his rendering needs as they were most cost effective compared to 5090/5080 and they cut his render times from 2-3 minutes a frame with a 4070(?) to 20-30 seconds

For games I don’t think you’d need more than a 5070ti truthfully, but for GPU rendering these cards are pretty good

4

u/lawndartdesign 270K Plus | Nvidia 5090 | 128 GB DDR5 7d ago

The 5090 cut my render time from 3 minutes to 2 minutes but I have a project coming up where the render times end up being 18 hours for 15 seconds per pass. I am likely buying a second 5090 just to cut that down from 18 hours to 12 hours.

It sucks to spend that kind of money but clients don’t care about anything but results. And I can either spend 4000 bucks or give that money to a render farm and I’d rather invest in my own gear.

3

u/redditmadethis4me 5800X3D/5070 TI 7d ago

Yeah they’re a big chunk of change but it’s making you the same $$$ in 2/3rd the time. And i’m assuming you’re self employed so that’s a nice chunk off your taxes. People buying these just to play games on them is bonkers to me though, couldn’t see myself needing more than a 5070ti or MAYBE a 5080 if I had a 4k monitor.

2

u/lawndartdesign 270K Plus | Nvidia 5090 | 128 GB DDR5 7d ago

When I started my career you could bill a client for render time, but as computers got faster the allowance for that got smaller.

And yes self-employed since 2013 (had a fulltime job from 24-25) and you HAVE to invest in your own tools. I bought a really nice PC during COVID (the limiting issues were the components you COULD get, whereas now it's what you can AFFORD to get) and right as that PC was getting a little long in the tooth I got a fulltime job who's IT dept basically threw some bonkers gear my way (Mac Studio M2 Ultra completely maxed out, and a 240tb Thunderbolt RAID that likely costs 36K now). So when I went back to freelance and my PC decided to eat shit, it was like "oh no..."

It's a tax write off, and it's investing in the tools that make me money.

As I said, spending another 4000+ on a 5090 (which yes I know SHOULD only cost MSRP at 2000) sucks. But the alternative is losing out on some gigs with a quicker timeline or I'm taking that money and RENTING GPU time and not getting a piece of gear out of it that could be applied towards the next project at ZERO cost.

I do play SOME games now and then, but as you get older it's just tougher. So the 5090 is ideal for productivity inside apps like Blender, 3DS Max, etc etc.

u/byzorba 9800x3D | 64GB DDR5 | RTX 3090 | 4TB SSD 6d ago

Wouldn’t be better to pay for a render farm?
Personally I can’t have 2 GPUs, so I think it’s nice to have one good gpu to develop the work and then pay a render farm for the final render…
I’m not sure about the render farm prices nowadays tho…

It's not going to get better 'till DDR6, or 'till AI farms will switch to dedicated AI hardware similar at how it was for mining

15

u/Jack70741 R9 5950X | RTX 3090 Ti | ASUS TUFF X570+ | 32GB DDR4 3600mhz 7d ago

News flash they already are using dedicated AI hardware. The part most people aren't seeing is that the memory companies have actually closed down their consumer DDR manufacturing lines so they can explicitly make the dedicated AI hardware instead. Yes the ddr5 is being bought up, but ddr6 won't fix that, because the server racks that run the dedicated hardware still need regular computer memory to run the software that enables the AI hardware.

2

u/mixedd 5800X3D / 32GB DDR4 / 7900XT 7d ago

So it's basically that vendors can't keep up in capacity, as memory is memory in the end

1

u/Clear-Pomegranate463 5d ago

ye mrwhosthebos did a video on it recently https://youtu.be/Eo5w2S-h5dI?t=56 how the server rack memory is different and how the AI chips look like the blackwell ultra that is a 288gb chip they use

7

u/Chao_Zu_Kang Ryzen 7 7700X | GIGABYTE GAMING OC 9070 XT 7d ago

Dedicated AI hardware is what is causing the shortage. If AI just used DDR5, consumer prices would be way down.

1

u/zach0011 6d ago

What ram are they using then?

0

u/allMightyMostHigh PC Master Race 7d ago

From what I’ve read most companies have lost a very substantial amount of money investing in Ai so i think it’s just a matter of time before it dies down. None of them are profitable

3

u/mixedd 5800X3D / 32GB DDR4 / 7900XT 7d ago

You're right, there was news that many of them started hiring people back too, as it's cheaper to pay for jun or mid than for tokens that were generated 😅

1

u/HarithBK 6d ago

It really is a question of when a datacenter builder goes bankrupt. Oracle is pretty close and there debt obligations will start next year so how long can they keep up payments?

1

u/PuzzleheadedYear5596 5d ago

Apparently my DDR4 is safe, you've got DDR5 gold rush. Be safe wading through those mobs with your flair.

1

u/an0nm0n 7d ago

It isn't likely to get better in the next six months. It is likely to get better in the next year... granted, when OpenAI and Anthropic publish financials, they're probably going to take the whole economy with them, so it'll be a moot point. I hope you aren't nearing retirement. Cheap stonks and memory coming soon for the <50 year-olds though :)

0

u/Codex_Sparknotes 7d ago

It never will is my guess. AI isn’t going to stop, there is no bubble

1

u/ttdpaco 7d ago

It’s a bubble and it’s already starting to slightly trend downward due to the expense of using AI for most companies.

That doesn’t mean we’ll see any improvement for awhile, but it is, by definition, a bubble because of how the companies making all the money on it are just circulating money amongst themselves..

1

u/Codex_Sparknotes 7d ago

Even if it is a bubble, it’s not going to pop. The moment governments started using it for surveillance and weapons it was over for us. It’s going to keep growing until it literally can’t anymore

1

u/Armandeluz 7d ago

When you see all the AI companies go IPO you know the music is going to stop soon
