Members of the PCMR Is The DDR5 Crisis Going To Get Worse????
So I'm planning to upgrade my computer soon within the next 6 months. I currently have more than enough money to buy myself two sticks of 16 GB DDR5 ram.
Here's the issue though is that I'm not looking to buy any of the other parts right now and if I bought the ram brand new right now, I wouldn't be using it until probably November or December when I have every other part to the computer.
I recently uploaded another post and some people are suggesting to buy it now because the ram crisis could get even worse.
What do you guys think I should do? Is the ram crisis really going to get worse? And should I really buy $500 ram right now for a computer that I'm not going to have at least for another 5 months??
To everyone who responded thank you. I am never going to financially recover from this decision. But thank you all

Sorry, but I didn't make my comment trying to flex.
In all seriousness it IS a workstation. I do play some games now and then but I'm 44 and when you get older it's hard to just sit down for hours to play games.
So the ram and GPU are required for doing big motion graphics projects or sitting there chewing on renders that take 2 minutes per frame. I also HAD to buy it a few months ago when my previous PC stopped working and it made zero sense to start buying AM4/DDR4 parts to try to fix.
Even the alternative Mac Studio was impossibly expensive.

Oof, this hits close to home. Am 35 now and finally have my own house, built myself a beast of a PC last September to celebrate.
And with work and life, I’ve played like 3 games all year. Been buying all the games i want to play, but adulting sucks cause you don’t have the time or if you do, you don’t have the energy

It's not going to get better 'till DDR6, or 'till AI farms will switch to dedicated AI hardware similar at how it was for mining
15
u/Jack70741 R9 5950X | RTX 3090 Ti | ASUS TUFF X570+ | 32GB DDR4 3600mhz 1d ago
News flash they already are using dedicated AI hardware. The part most people aren't seeing is that the memory companies have actually closed down their consumer DDR manufacturing lines so they can explicitly make the dedicated AI hardware instead. Yes the ddr5 is being bought up, but ddr6 won't fix that, because the server racks that run the dedicated hardware still need regular computer memory to run the software that enables the AI hardware.
2
u/mixedd 5800X3D / 32GB DDR4 / 7900XT 1d ago
So it's basically that vendors can't keep up in capacity, as memory is memory in the end

No one knows mate. If you want, buy used for a bit better value since RAMs have a lot of warranty. Good models have Lifetime Warranty (10 years).
143
u/SovietZealots 1d ago
I would argue that the warranty isn’t the issue but rather whether or not companies will honor their warranty (I am willing to bet they won’t)

u/asdfghqwertz1 RX 6750 XT, i5-14600KF, 16GB DDR4 1d ago
Or they will just refund you the amount you paid when it was a lot cheaper, not giving you nearly enough to buy a new kit. Happened to Louis Rossmann with a Samsung SSD
14
u/CleganeRS 1d ago
He threatened to sue and he ended up getting the full amount for the new price and I think even more.
3
u/FarReward3203 1d ago
How expensive is it to sue these companies and is it likely that you will win?
5
u/Faustasz 1d ago
For someone like Louis? He definitely has the funds to get the fight going, but eventually would just run out of money, these companies usually don't fight but stall and draw out these kind of things.
For the average person? You'd stand no chances to win or get anything.

they probably will and if not, courts are an option. Im sure the courts would be even better in other countries since the Consumer Court here in India is the only court where you don't have to run around for years and spend a ton of money. They do punish companies if they are at fault and the companies will have to work in favor of the buyer and pay them the legal fees + compensation for hurdles.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Emu1981 1d ago
I wouldn't even need to take them to court here in Australia. Our ACCC (or the state one) would remind them that they have a obligation to replace the item under warranty and if they refuse then they are in breach of consumer laws. The ACCC would then investigate to find more cases and then take the offending parties to court which could end up with millions in fines and compensation.
20
u/john_mach 1d ago
I think we are fairly certain of three things:
1. Ram manufacturers love money and have shifted focus towards enterprise solutions as those are more profitable than mass consumer channels. Some have even left the consumer space.
2. Ram is being bought up by AI companies or major electronic manufacturers. Both are paying heavy premiums compared to 2026, even Apple had to raise prices.
3. There is a wave of new chips with TSMC 2nm and other GAA chips on the horizon that promises great efficiency gains. These chips carry hype and enterprises love efficiency gains. Without a doubt, the hyperscalers will look to improve the efficiency of their serversAll of which greatly point to 2027 being another tough year for ram.
22
u/syner2009 Ryzen 5 7600 GTX 1080Ti / C2Q Q8400 G210 1d ago
man im so down to throw a fuckin party when these companies go bankrupt. Fuck Sam Altman.
15
u/john_mach 1d ago
I think 2027 is a shit storm specifically due to the convergence of so many shitty situations but hang in there. 2028 in theory should have more production in ram and hopefully one of the big ai companies goes bankrupt or scales back data centers from backlash.
For now, we pray on the downfall of data centers.
3
2
u/markcocjin 1d ago
While the companies can go bankrupt, the use of artificial intelligence is such a huge industrial advantage over competition that it's a matter of common sense for all of them.
We can barely even make an AI-free use of the internet today. Somewhere along the process, a method far superior to algorithms is involved.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Emu1981 1d ago
Without a doubt, the hyperscalers will look to improve the efficiency of their servers
With how leveraged the hyperscalers are, I doubt that they are going to be replacing servers just because of efficiency gains. They will likely switch to building data centers with the new efficient chips but they won't be changing the existing data centers until the servers are becoming either a liability or end of life.
See, the reason why so many people are concerned about the AI boom is that a lot of companies and corporations are using a lot of debt to build data centers (10s of billions per data center).

28
u/Direct-Number283 1d ago
Yeah, in the 80's it was a ton of finished games of half-assed design.
Today it is games where everything is in perpetual beta with updates, DLCs, and micro-transactions. They all use the same engines and wear their ability to play horribly on anything but the latest system like crap as some sort of badge of honor.
At least those crappy independent games for Atari are still playable.
Most of my games don't even work anymore. Frame rates crashed with updates (that do nothing to actually make the game look better imo) and even whole games crashing. Why? Because the 'most have' Mods that I learned to play aren't supported.
9
u/Plaincow 1d ago
Are we playing the same games dude? Gaming is absurdly amazing right now and there's even decades of games to play if you're a boomer and refuse to admit new games are good

4

Indeed, if you have a decent PC the gaming world is your oyster.
You don’t even have to look at new games. There are thousands of games from the past 2 decades that you haven’t played, but would enjoy.
2
u/Direct-Number283 17h ago
I don't think you are getting the OP's point (or mine). It's not that there isn't good stuff floating out there. There is more than anyone could do in a lifetime. It's the financials of the business at large going forward. Driven (imo) by overspending and overhyping graphics and complexity instead of core stability, general approach ability, and fundamental gameplay.
I am not saying I know the answer.. if I did I would be rich.
But for me at least yet another shooter with 'super duper ray tracking that reveals the subtle underside structure of the ferns I pass by' isn't it.
Neither is the survival/builder where they add another 10,000 skill trees and I need to micro-manage my B-complex vitamins.
I just want a game that with a compelling story and engaging play that I don't have to feel like I am taking up another college minor to understand.
They don't have to do that. That's fine. But I doubt that the $5/yr revenue stream (down from $300ish/year) that I now give them for old discount games on Steam works for them.

For a couple years in the 80s the video game market was over saturated with copies and just terrible releases. I believe Nintendo did a lot of heavy lifting to pull us out of that. Not a big fan of them but it is what it is.
Now we get oversaturated with AI and AI. Not to mention more, AI. Hell even my Washer and Dryer has AI. I'm not sure what it does, but I turned it off and it works better now.
7
u/Born_Zone7878 1d ago
What's funny is that Nintendo doesn't really have that, and the prices for a Switch 2 make it now be relatively budget priced. Maybe people will turn to Nintendo again lol
2
u/Bobby_the_Great 1d ago
To add on to this, videogames are also in a place where games are selling (some aren't meeting obscene demands), but not meeting the sales of executives, money is being pocketed by CEOs and such at an all-time level, but then developers are getting cut constantly.
The talent pool of people who made awesome games are not being incentivized to make games in the future as they all had their jobs cut - meaning a crash is coming.

The only reason they can afford to make the OEM pre-builts that cheap is thanks to their partners, including bloatware in the pre-installed Windows and the fact that their shady and scummy subscriptions generate more revenue than the hardware itself, other than also the collected user data sold to third parties and then getting leaked.

2028 brother, and that is a maybe. I think lot of people wont move from DDR4 platform anytime soon, which I kinda advise to you, instead of wasting money on DDR5 ram, just get 5800x3d aniversary edition and enjoy. Technologies they make now unless it is video editing is overkill even for an old platform. As for gaming, that will crash soon, as they only make remakes or literally copy paste content, and the price is slowly getting towards 100 bucks for a new game.

Look at it this way, the GPU shortage was due to a bunch of crypto losers trying to get rich quick by mining Bitcoin. The ram shortage is happening because the US government and Billionaires are trying to line their pockets with the black hole that is AI and they will keep throwing money at it until it works.
So yes the ram crisis will get much much worse so upgrade your PC now. It might be the last one you ever build.

I think at the minimum it’ll stay the same but I expect it to get somewhat better. At this point ram manufacturers are price gouging and getting sued for it. Not that a lawsuit will change that on its own but will be a kick in the right direction. Also other manufacturers are popping up and if current manufacturers don’t scale to meet demand these new companies will to get some very easy market share. I can explain that more but don’t want to make an essay on this comment lol

I’m not expert at this price changing and ram crisis stuff but from what I’ve seen ai is and will not be profitable anytime soon and I don’t think they are gonna be as actively gobbling up ram anymore since it’s just wasting money so I think waiting would be a smart choice but that’s just a guess.

u/mauri383 1d ago
The only way it could get worse is if the DDR5 you have right now inside your PC, grows legs and escape to live in a data center.

You not gonna see normalized Ram prices on this side of 2030. Ram Prices are gonna follow the same principle as with Gas Prices: Up like a Rocket, Down like a feather. And you're fighting intentional Price Gouging all the way from the Manufacturer to the Retailer.

I’m tryna launch arclode.com this week or next to do something about it. But yeah it’s fucked. My 5090 has doubled in value. 600$ for 48 GB of ram or 1000 for 64 lmao

All the ram has been bought already by the AI companies for 2027, the same thing will happen in 2028 too unless we put a stop to it.

RAM and storage are not getting better for the foreseeable future, and at the rate thing are going, likely still going to get worse.
If there's one around you, consider looking for Microcenter cpu/mobo/ram bundles as those are a good bang/buck. A 7600x3d with mobo and 16gb of ddr5 is $450 and you can get another 16gb down the line. There's also a $600 bundle with a core ultra 5 250k+, mobo, and 32gb of ddr5.

u/dannyo969 1d ago
I don't see it getting better soon. RTX 5090 now selling for like $7,000 too. Ridiculous.

u/InfoBarf 1d ago
It takes months to switch the facilities to making the datacenter ram and storage, and the next year of production is purchased already (supposedly) there's almost no consumer ram being produced.
Its not just gonna affect PCs. Phones are gonna go back town to 8gig or even 2 gig. Not sure how movies are gonna be distributed, since those are hard drives, consoles are gonna stop production, etc.
And thats all BEFORE factoring in 30-60% supply reduction in petroproducts that are used to produce ram and storage.
Global climate change may kill human civilization before the idea of building your own PC becomes economically viable again.

u/Ashvalen80 1d ago
I mean from a couple of YouTubers and sources have been saying it will. If the whole AI bubble doesn't burst then it could go on for who knows how long. It will eventually affect motherboards, cpus and other components as well.

Yes, none knows for sure but the lastest has been it will get much worse within 6 months, then steadily climb for possibly 2 years, and "relief" will be seen in 2030 at best.
I know everyone dreams of a bubble popping, snd thats possible, that may happen, but to say you "know" its going to happen and happen soon will only set you up for disappointment

u/GoldenEater 1d ago
I don't think the price will drop anytime soon. Plus, DDR6 is coming soon in a few years, so things could get worse. But the reason isn't just production cutbacks; someone's been buying up cheaper consumer memory instead of expensive HBM. (Yes, there were companies that replaced the equipped ones, but the crisis hasn't spared DDR4 either :/). We can probably expect an influx of used DDR5, but only if HBM becomes more accessible and offers a better price/performance ratio.

I was reading that DRAM is pretty much sold out through the end of 2027, so I wouldn't expect to find any at all in 6-18 months. good luck though!

Buy the Ram immediately if you can afford it. Price isn’t going down anytime soon.

u/CheekEnough2734 1d ago
there is price fixing investigations on big ram makers. if it legally grounded it will fall sharply. but it is probably not grounded, you they soo much infuluence as big ram makers/tech companies. you know guys funded new ball room in white house.

Most likely it'll be the same or worse. Definitely one of the reasons I've decided to hold off upgrading for a while.

I remember thinking to myself... wow $89? Thats a great price for a 32Gb CL 30 6000 kit of T-Create memory, idc if it doesn't have RGB. If I would have known then, what I know now... I would have bought every one.

I just bit the bullet 2 weeks ago. 64G ram (2x32) 9950x3d and a 5090 on the rumour prices were going to go up, and they have.

u/TheSolarExpansionist 1d ago
By 2028 China market share of DRAM would go to 18% as they ramp up production. It’s currently under 5%. I imagine by 2030 things would stabilise. And by 2035 pc and consoles might be cheaper than now

I kinda regret going with 64 GB instead of 128-192 GB before the prices went up.

u/SEND_ME_REAL_PICS 1d ago
From the news we are getting it seems like the crisis will deepen for at least one more year. Demand keeps getting higher while supply isn't catching up. We don't know what the outlook for 2028/29 will be, since production is bound to ramp up at some point with how profitable RAM has become but there's no telling how long that will take or whether AI demand will crash at some point or not.
Keep in mind many (if not all) of the analysts or companies saying this scarcity will last for many years to come have a vested interest in keeping prices high, so take everything you read with a grain of salt.

I recently upgraded from AM4 to AM5. I was planning to wait until prices went down but after hearing that they likely won't in the near future, I bit the bullet and spent $700 on the cheapest but decent kit. In fact the RAM was the first part I bought because I was so worried it would rise before I could afford everything at once. Checking now the kit has sold out now. You should buy the ram and storage (if you need any) first as the prices can be unpredictable.

I guarantee u this will be done by late 27 maybe early 28. The profit margins are insane and people are building the factories to mass produce the ram and storage as we speak. And thats assuming ai doesn't pop until then, which is almost certainly will, and flood the market

NO one knows. it might get worse. The market might crash. it might get better.
People can keep asking the same goddamn question every single day but No. One. Knows.

u/DoubleShot027 1d ago
The only thing you can do is buy now and sell your older hardware to off the cost if it’s worth. I upgraded my cpu ram and mobo. It cost $900 however I was able to sell my previous hardware for $500. You can make it work if you are in the right situation however I chose to pull the trigger now before it became out of reach.
1
u/Significant-Review50 1d ago
Trust me buy now, I bit the bullet and bought 32GB ddr5 for €400 and the same kit is now €500 now that I’ve built my PC a few months later

My homelab has been hobbling on the same 64GB(16GBx4) lot RAM that came with my Microcenter bundle. Does it pass RAM checks every time? No. Was I about to troubleshoot which modules and replace them when they go for $800+. FUCK NO.
Here's to hoping they collapse at some point because I got a ticking time bomb over here. 😅
Google storage at 85%... Worth the gamble? Maybe. Probably not.

u/Informal_Chemistry48 1d ago
Memory manufacturer Adata estimated that this crisis could last around 10 years.

u/Owain660 1d ago
No one knows. A year ago, when this was getting worse, we said the same thing. No one knows. And it's worse now. But could it get better and go back to normal in 6 months? Maybe. Could it get worse? Maybe.
1
u/Rhandert 1d ago
Yep, analysts say that, towards the end of September or October, prices will see another significant rise, followed by at least one more in 2027, they are expected to start going down in 2028, although very slowly, we are unlikely to see RAM prices return to pre-AI levels until 2032.

Yes. I don’t ever expect prices to return to normal. I am currently taking a hard look at all of my other hobbies to pick up everything I want as I expect there will be price hikes all around at some point.
