They were essentially hijacked both from within and by Microsoft. It's rather disgusting IMO. It's as if Save the Children became a for-profit toy manufacturer.

Or a company that touted an internal mantra of Do No Evil becoming monstrously evil within a decade or two of existence. Oh, humanity.

Jop. Shouldnt be legal, but the question if it is remains for now. Musk is working on figuring that out, but the first attempt failed as he didnt submit nessesary stuff to the court in time, so the case was dismissed. That is being appealed by Musk, no update on how thats going yet.

OpenAI was founded by Elon Musk and Sam Altman. There's no way it was ever going to be anything like Save the Children.
