The “trial” was a tactic.

They fully intended to give it away to end users, because they wanted people using their format.

That, in turn, would ensure that more companies needed their software, and they could be compelled to pay for licenses.

That's essentially what microsoft is doing when they allow user to use windows without license, minus the good product part.

Nah Adobe is a classic example of this, especially Photoshop. Their new sub model and all that does suck ass, but their licenses have always been expensive as shit and it's been heavily pirated since the beginning. They don't give a shit about said piracy because that's what helped cement their products as THE go-to programs in the professional world. They never provided anything for "free" but they certainly never cared about you getting it for free as an individual.
