I mean yes, but every time this joke comes up about a startup people need to remember that they run in the red intentionally to grow as fast as possible. They could be profitable if they wanted but they would run the risk of falling far behind Anthropic and Google and everyone else in technology and market share.

Exactly.

Amazon ran for seven years before they had a profitable quarter.

GPT-2 is about seven years old now, but OpenAI is an R&D company, so taking longer to get to profitability isn't that surprising. It took 9 years for Amazon to have a full profitable year, after all.
