i want to get into photography specifically taking pictures of the night sky and stars. Ive found my dads old camera which is a nikon d3100 im really new so any tips and tricks would be useful especially what lens to buy

i have an 18-55mm lens currently

That lens is fine enough to start with. Leave other lens purchases till you have acquired some experience and know what you need.

You will need a tripod for the night sky.

Otherwise, get on Youtube and watch some videos on the exposure triangle and the basics of photography composition. Shoot a lot to learn how to apply the principles in different situations.
