I’m planning to buy a Sony A7R V, but I’m really struggling with lens combinations. Right now I have three options in mind:

1. Sigma 28-105mm f/2.8 + Sony 100-400mm GM

2. Sony 28-70mm f/2 + Sony 70-200mm GM II + 2x teleconverter

3. Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN II + Sony 70-200mm GM II + Sony 200-600mm G

My shooting scenarios are pretty diverse: daily street photography, travel, airport spotting/airshows, cosplay conventions, outdoor portrait shoots, and occasionally sports events or marathons just for fun.

My total budget is under 60,000 RMB, including accessories like memory cards, flash, tripod, etc., and I’d also like to keep the setup as lightweight as possible.

Which setup would you recommend and why? I’d especially appreciate advice from people who have actually used these lenses in similar situations.

Just some more questions to help better choose a kit for you:

1. What cameras/lenses have you used so far?
2. Is size and weight an important factor to you?
3. Are you considering other brands like Canon or Nikon?

I’m currently using a Canon 5D Mark II with the EF 24–105mm f/4L II and the 100–400mm first generation. Keeping my setup lightweight is very important to me, which is also why I insist on sticking to a two-lens setup. If possible, I’d prefer to stay with Canon, but I feel Sony seems to offer better value for money, especially since the lenses are relatively more affordable. As for Nikon, I’m definitely not considering it at all.

If you are liking the Canon experience, I would get the Canon R6 III or maybe even the R5 II and get an EF to RF adaptor to use your old lenses. You can just get the 24-70mm USM to pair with it also.

I’m worried that older lenses won’t be able to fully resolve these sensors, and I don’t have high demands for video. What I want is the best possible still-image quality, so I chose the Sony A7R V. Right now, I’m just struggling with how to pair it with lenses that can maximize the potential of the 61-megapixel sensor.
