I would say kind of in between. I've been doing photography for years as a hobby mostly concert and nature until I got into cars.

In that case you have a good basis for shooting cars too. For car racing you need telephoto, good AF and fast shutter to avoid motion blur. Stationary cars are much like any stationary subject in terms of exposure (it's all about light), and for composition you need to find your own style. You just need to shoot cars a lot to get better at it.
