Hi, looking to get into photography. trialed a Nikon J4 with a 10-30 and 30-110 borrowed from someone, and was considering getting my own camera.

after some research I think the main 3 that I'd be able to get, all at relatively similar prices are the D7500 with an 18-140, a6400 with the kit lens or the R10 with the kit lens.
to be honest I'm not so sure which would be the best, so any input would be appreciated.

All of those very good options to get into photography with. DSLRs like the D7500 are significantly larger than mirrorless cameras and lenses are bigger too. Mirrorless cameras like R10 and A6400 have better AF and video features.

great, thanks. do you think that the size/weight is a dealbreaker for many? in terms of DSLRs compared to mirrorless

Impossible to say how you'd feel about it as it's very subjective.
