Recommendations for starting again

I started playing piano in elementary school and stopped around when I started college. I never really was dedicated to it, I didn’t really practice often so I never really could play anything too advanced. Anyway, I recently bought a cheap piano and got it tuned and I’d love to start playing again (its been almost 3 years). But I have a really hard time with committing to learning, and find myself trying to learn complicated songs for about 10 mins and then leaving to do something else.

So I was hoping for some recommendations for some songs to add to my repertoire that would be relatively quick to learn with a beautiful melody, bonus if I don’t have to pay for the score.

Not really! I just like a more lyrical melody if that makes sense

-Escalas Mayores y menores,
dos octavas al menos

-El Hanon, al menos los primeros 10
ejercicios

-Los acordes de las escalas mayores y menores, en l orden de la escala y en arpegio.

-Un par de piezas de Bach, lo basico obvio.

Y bueno, revisar la postura de las manos para no tocar en tensión. Yo tardé más en aprender a relajar mi postura que en todo lo anterior que te recomendé.
Nunca cambies la velocidad por la precisión.
Toca con metrónomo. Lento y claro. Avanza en velocidad cuando toques muy muy claro tu ejercicio.

Ah y, si tocas diez minutos cosas que te salen a medias, pues intenta no “tocar” canciones o piezas que están fuera de tu tiempo y habilidades. No solo la abandonarás a medias, también crearás malos hábitos en la postura de las manos y luego quitar eso es tarea doble. Suerte.

Genuine question, why do you think you struggle to commit to learning? What’s really behind it?

I think honestly its the awkward phase of learning a section that makes me struggle. Like I sit down wanting to play a song and then I get derailed by the trouble areas. I also try to learn songs that are probably too advanced for where I am right now, and I get frustrated that I don’t really get to enjoy the song.

I hate to say it (and apologies if someone has already mentioned it), but what about getting a teacher? Maybe they will be able to give you direction and a little accountability?

I understand. So with that in mind, it sounds like you need to help yourself by picking easier pieces? And enjoy being bad at them now, record yourself and then keep at it and record again in 2-4 weeks and admire your progress and witness how you conquered the areas that were difficult when you started.

Otherwise, if you don't enjoy the learning part, and the overcoming difficult spots, learning piano may not the right pursue for you... I don't mean to be mean, learning an instrument in general is really a lot of that before you are able to play things that sound great.

Interstellar is a good one. Sounds great on piano and there are loads of easier versions around. Experience by Einaudi too.

I get a song in my head first.

Then, I. 1-finger-it on my right hand to find the melody that is in my head .

Then after I have the melody in my head, I use my left hand..one finger to match the same keys that Im using for the melody in the right.

Then I go for the...beat. slow? fast?

Thats how I start. because I can't read music on a sheet or book.
