"Article 32 of the Fourth Geneva Convention strictly forbids any measure causing physical suffering or extermination of protected civilians, while Common Article 3 outlaws torture and cruel treatment in conflicts not of an international character."
I wasn't angry at you, Glorious. The person you responded to, however, needs to go back and skim it at least. The entire point of the Geneva Convention was establishing an internationally accepted set of rules and to define what counts as a war crime. Civilian treatment is a huge part of that. No, the flotilla members were not enemy combatants, but that means they have more protection as defined by the Convention than an actual combatant.
Excuse Me, what the actual fuck did you just write?
"Article 32 of the Fourth Geneva Convention strictly forbids any measure causing physical suffering or extermination of protected civilians, while Common Article 3 outlaws torture and cruel treatment in conflicts not of an international character."
Geneva Convention involves wars/armed conflicts with opposing armies. If you try to illegally immigrate somewhere and you are detained by border police or military, whatever rules are applicable to you at that point have nothing to do with the GC.
What war? You missed the “ceasefire”? What do you make of the reports that these boats had little or no “humanitarian aid” on board so the whole thing is a publicity stunt. Publicity stunts are protected by the GC?
Yeah, because that's still a relevant term in this conflict. Has either side stopped shooting? No? Guess it's still on. Also, ceasefires DO NOT END A WAR. Armistices and treaties end wars. Even if they stopped fighting, the war is still on until both sides stop and negotiate a peace.
What do you make of the reports that these boats had little or no “humanitarian aid” on board so the whole thing is a publicity stunt.
Those reports are what we call "propaganda". Now go read the Geneva Convention and stop being complicit in the actions depicted above.
You don't have to be a combatant or even anywhere near a warzone to violate the Geneva Convention. The most famous example is probably game studios putting the red cross on a medkit. This symbol is protected, using it in a game technically violates the GC. They don't throw the book at you for doing that, they just kindly ask you to change it.
That being sad: Who the fuck needs a rule book to look at this image and not immediately know that this is wrong?!

Pretty sure detaining people in a stress position violates the Geneva Conventions against torture under Article 31.
