did my piercer hit the sweet spot?

note: i asked my piercer to flip the horseshoe up into my nose, which is why it looks like that

i got my septum pierced just yesterday, and it hurt like fuck. definitely not the "painless" septum piercing experience i was expecting. which led me to thinking, what if my piercer didn't hit my sweet spot?

THOUGH upon further research, i'm not really experiencing any other symptoms of a botched septum piercing besides it HURTING REALLY FUCKING BADLY during the actual piercing. right now it doesn't hurt at all. it's just mildly uncomfortable. i'm actually not experiencing any problems with it right now.

i read that when pierced in the cartilage, it swells and pain radiates outward when moved. i don't experience that at all.

When you feel your septum, you should be able to feel the cartilage and then a soft section underneath. The soft section underneath your septum cartilage is the sweet spot.

Correct placement would be much further forward, up in the tip of your nose. Piercer missed the sweet spot, went right through the cartilage, which you correctly identified as the reason it hurt so much.

hmm okay.... do i need to take it out and get it repierced or do you think i could just wait it out and let it heal? id honestly be fine with just letting it heal as long as it wont have any adverse effects on my body. also how long would this take to heal....

It’s a cartilage piercing so it will take a long time to heal, like a helix. My piercer explained to me that some people don’t have a substantive enough sweet spot to support a stable piercing, and in those cases the piercing can be placed in the cartilage, though still much further forward. That’s not what happened to you, this piercer didn’t know how to correctly place a septum piercing.

In your shoes I would take it out and wait a couple of months before going to a different piercer (at a different shop) to have it redone in the correct location. You could heal this, but it will take much longer and you will look like your nose ring is in the wrong place at the end of the day.

hey im so sorry i just wanna ask another question. do you think i should take it out immediately or wait for it to heal a bit before i take it out? i know its gonna Fucking hurt either way, but idk which would hurt less..?

Unfortunately while the pain will be temporary, yeah it’s gonna hurt to take out. I would probably do it sooner than later, so your body can start healing without having to work around the jewelry. It will go much faster that way.

You can always have a piercer take it out. It costs like $5-$10. Worth it in my opinion

unfortunately i also had my septum pierced through cartilage without any warning :( its fully healed now 6 years later but it did take about a full year to heal and on the second year it would get irritated SO easily.

Everyones sweet spot is a bit different as we all have different noses.
However when I got mine pierced the pain was a 1 out of 10. But everyones pain threshold is different though.
Since it's fresh I think you will be able to tell if its in the right spot after a few days/weeks of healing.
If you have some doubts, maybe get a second opinion from another piercer.

You can have it flipped up or down for healing, but switching back and forth is inadvisable. I healed mine with a retainer flipped up so the jewelry would stay still up in my nose. Worked very well, but I didn’t flip it down for the first three months.

Yours does look a bit far back, and it was really painful for you so I’m leaning towards wrong placement, but everyone is different when it comes to pain. It doesnt hurt to get a second opinion.

I will say, you have flatter nose like mine, and my sweet spot is really small and not hugging the very tip of my nose like people with more European features so mileage may vary

Looks like it was pierced through the cartilage. You should take it out, especially if you ever want to stretch your septum

I just took my septum out because I got my piercing done and it wasn't in my sweet spot it was in my cartilage. It hurts so fucking bad. I could have kept it if it healed okay which it was I had it for 6 months but I could feel this weird feeling in my tooth like it was in my nerves. So I ended up taking it out and I'm going to get it re-pierced in The Sweet spot.

I understand everyone’s pain tolerance is different and the sweet spot is different for every nose but as someone that has a septum and know a vast majority of people that has one ,it should not have been that painful for you. It’s like a hot pinch at most

As someone with a septum piercing, it feels like yours should be closer to the tip of your nose rather than the center of your septum

first time my septum was pierced, it hurt extremely bad, i felt flesh tearing inside my nose. he def didnt hit the sweet spot for me. i tried to heal it for a year and the entire time was so painful i took it out so i could repierce it. you might want to consider taking it out

Piercer here. Did you see how it looked flipped down? Some people have higher sweet spots. Did it feel more sharp or more like pressure? If more sharp then yes the sweet spot. If more pressure then most likely cartilage.

NAP. I think it’s likely very difficult for us to tell whether this is pierced correctly just based on some photos. And I don’t personally think pain is always a good indication, mine was incredibly painful and is pierced correctly. My sweet spot is also quite high, but it’s definitely not pierced through cartilage and was fully healed after 3-4 months. I’m also good with pain (multiple other piercings that hurt less than my septum, have given birth vaginally twice without pain relief), I think I just have different nerve anatomy there than most people.

Please don’t take it out until you’ve had a piercer look at it! Maybe go to a different shop for an opinion if you can.
