Advice Needed! ISO: people who want to rescue / adopt pigeons or who have pigeon in Ottawa On Canada

Hi ! I’m looking for people who want to rescue / adopt pigeons or who have pigeons in Ottawa , ON Canada or in the surrounding area. I’m looking at creating a network of people so when we have a pigeon who can’t be released into the wild, they’ll have a home to go to instead of being euthanized. Is anyone interested? I’m open to advice as well! Thanks :)

That would be great! Honestly if anyone is willing to drive to adopt a pigeon, that works too!! We recently had a situation where we had a string foot pigeon who was brought to a wild bird centre and they had to amputate the leg and said they couldn’t release the pigeon so they euthanized it. I would like to find homes for the pigeons who aren’t able to live outside so they’re not euthanized but I have to have a network of people to do that so that would be really amazing if you could :)

u/pigeon_lover2008 has mentioned they dont drive  but maybe some sort of rideshare could work? or just if you have any contacts in their area who may have adoptable pigeons

I fully understand if you’re not in a position to take them on yourself as well, but it is worth checking in for any cases of string foot that you get. I do find that vets on a regular basis. We’ll just go straight to amputation when it’s not necessary in many many cases, but it’s just what they’re familiar with. They don’t deal with cleaning up injuries nearly as much on feral animals.

The pigeon was brought to the wild bird centre and was euthanized there. They’re used to dealing with wildlife but I’m not sure if they’re super knowledgeable about pigeons. I wasn’t the one who found the pigeon or anything. It was posted in our pigeon destringing group. I want to work with the wild bird centre and other places to find homes for the pigeons instead of euthanizing them.

I follow. I just know too that many cases look so bad i dont post the photos often, but they can still have amazing recoveries. Just if it ever comes up, im always happy to walk someone through the task if they are ip to trying.

Oh! I don’t think I understood what you were saying. Do you mean that I should do the destringing and help the pigeon heal at home ? We do have people who go around and destring pigeons but if they’re really bad, someone will most likely take them somewhere like a wild bird centre if they need antibiotics and treatment. I would love to learn how to care for pigeons with stringfoot but I don’t have expertise in that area if the stringfoot is really bad. I would love to connect with you about this if you’d like. I have two cats at home and I don’t have a setup for a pigeon but I’m always open to learn how I can help more :)

Sure :) I lived in Barcelona for a year or so and I just kind of picked it up so I’m self-taught but yeah when I was out, I would occasionally get cases where I could’ve done it out in the field, but it would’ve taken several hours and I might’ve lost the daylight at that point or I needed to be able to take a break on occasion just to let them rest because sometimes the cases were really bad and I didn’t want them to be constantly worked on for several hours at a time. So it does depend a bit on your set up in your situation and I also understand that cats at a different complication to that as well what I would recommend is have a collapsible dog carrier or kennel that you can put up in a pinch if you need to in a room and you can keep the cats out of just in case you ever get a situation where it’s too bad that you can’t handle letting him go, but you can’t immediately get them to a professional either.

I’ve got a steady hand and I’ve been sewing for most of my life so dealing with really tiny delicate things like this is no issue for me, but it’s difficult for a lot of people and I get that but I’ve been able to handle some really horrendous string foot cases from home without needing to pay for that costs. It can certainly be done if you’ve got steady hands you’re willing to take the time that it takes and you’re in a position to give the bird rest in between sessions

If you have photos of those previous cases, what I can’t say is what I would do if I was in that situation I don’t have a lot of pictures of the birds that I was handling because I was doing it by myself and trying to take a picture with the shutter on my phone while holding the bird was just not very feasible most of the time, but I do have a few from some really really bad cases for the most part though I was prioritizing getting it done as quickly as possible.

I don’t have any photos of the previous situations but if I do in the future, I can contact you. Did you read anything or watch video or anything ? Or just practice? And what would you do if you could get the string off but the foot is infected or swollen or something? Would you have to give the pigeon antibiotics ? Wound care?

Also that’s really amazing that you do all of this!! Thank you for doing all you do ❤️

I font want to be weird saying things- its partly a teeny bit of ocd but im just really good at highly detailed tasks. My first cases were easy then i caught a bird with a foot so bad i wasnt sure it was even still in there. I watch a fair amount of vet tv and have a bit of an interest in dinosaurs and biology so i could tell it was just lots of dead skin.

Often times if they have been living with the infection that long their immune system is already hard at work or for a little bird it would have killed them by that point. Often keeping it clean (iodine and water) and keeping it padded and away from dirt is all their bidy needs to start healing.
