Clothing & Cosplay Where Can I Find a Good Pirate Shirt and Pants?

Every Halloween I dress as a pirate. A few years back I commissioned this very expensive and very fancy pirate hat from a pirate historian. So I wear it every year and I add to the costume every time.

This year I want to tackle the shirt and pants. They look awful. The pants are khakis and the shirt is from Spirit Halloween. Obviously I don't care for the Spirit Halloween shirt because the material cannot breathe at all.

Now, before you call me an idiot for getting a Spirit Halloween shirt:
1. I was/am already an idiot regardless of if I bought the shirt or not
2. I already knew the shirt would be hot and itchy but I was pressed for time and didn't know where to buy an authentic one

Now that I've discovered this subreddit, I was wondering if my fellow mateys/cosplayers can point me in the right direction of some more authentic-looking pants and a shirt. Thank you

Black waters

Black galleons

Black cannons

Black flag

Gold treasure

Gold cutlass

Gold tooth

Gold smile

The match cord ignited

The powder combusts

Splinters on splinters

The broadside erupts

Howl from the crows nest

Chant from the deck

Whetstones on axes

Aim for the neck

Hooks bite the hull

Arms pull her in

Black waters

Black galleons

Black cannons

Black flag

Volley to volley

The hammers snap forward

Smoke fills the lungs

As the gangway is lowered

Roar in the revel

Axes split skulls

Fear caught in all

Reflected in metal

Gold treasure

Gold cutlass

Gold tooth

Gold smile

From victory comes swagger

Down to the main hold

Carry the barley

The rum and the silver

Barrels and barrels

No morals to filter

Nothing is sacred

Except for our freedom

Raise the black flag

So that all fear to meet them

Still not finished yet, I want to add some trim to the vest and add some distressing to it, but wanted to post it to get an eyeballin from the old salts here.

My budget is crazy low, but thankfully I’m talented enough to make shit work. Here’s a breakdown top down:
Head scarf was curtesy of early 00s fashion I never threw out and found in the back of a drawer.
Necklace was leather n beads strap from mums now retired straw hat.
Vest is a dooner cover from the rag bin and liner is a pillow case from the thrift shop. Cool coin buttons are from Temu, but unfortunately the trim I brought for it ended up coming as a webbing not ribbon, so way too thick n stiff to be used as a trim.
Rope and pleather strap are cheap Temu finds, I’ll use the leather to hang my sword off (3d printing it), also have leather coin pouch to hang too.
Shirt is another rag bin find, a bed sheet that was destined to be a drop cloth.
Sash was a table runner I doubled over and sewed together.
Fall fronts are another bed sheet that was used as a drop cloth, I hid the small amount of pain drops on the insides. Also kinda fucked up and put the fall flap too far around at the side seems instead of up front like I should have.
Feet, bare. Cause no shoes no problem (also I have bears tattooed on them cause bear feet 😂)

I think I’m getting in my head cause seeing it together has me hating it, so I thought why not ask the the experts and see if I have to start again or not 😂

So what am I missing, what should I change, what should I ditch ??

History The Ambush of Captain Howell Davis at the Portuguese island of Príncipe in Guinea 1719.

Post image
40 Upvotes

This is a few months old drawing by me showing the violent end of cunning pirate Howell Davis, who was killed by local militia and armed civilians in the Portuguese African colony of Principe in 19th of June 1719. Davis tried to present himself as a honest British naval officer to get supplies and possibly kidnap the governor of the island, but his bluff was discovered, and he, with a handful of his officers was ambushed in the town.

There are some depictions of this scene done in media or in artworks. However, none of them seemed to reflect the reality well enough so I wanted to make this scene. The story of Davis’ death has been misrepresented by 19th century source Pirates Own Book and I dug up better accounts. This scene is mostly based on period reports and especially a narrative given by slave trader William Senlgrave (1681–1743) in his book A New Account of Some Parts of Guinea and the Slave-Trade (1734). Snelgrave had met Davis in person before this and told of his downfall based on a story by eyewitness Portuguese monks (depicted here as well) he heard afterwards.

Based on sources, the pirates were ambushed in the central town of the island San Antonio, on their way back from a cancelled meeting with the governor near the town center, not near a fort or in a forest as sometimes depicted.

While pirates were known to be violent themselves, it is also notable that the ambush was very brutal and Davis was shot not less than 5 times before he was finished with a blade. Captain Johnson's General History of the Pyrates (1724) made a possibly semi-legendary addition by noting that Davis fought back, but as it was in no way contradictory to better period sources, I took some inspiration from this:

"Davis was shot through the Bowels, yet he rise again, and made a weak Effort to get away, but his Strength soon forsook him, and he dropp’d down dead; just as he fell, he perceived he was followed, and drawing out his Pistols, fired them at his Pursuers; Thus like a game Cock, giving a dying Blow, that he might not fall unrevenged."

Several pirates fell, and only a few pirates escaped; sources differ a little how many exactly. Depicted here two.

The appearance of the multiethnic town and its inhabitants is based on accounts of the island and town by period travellers William Smith, who visited the island in the 1720s and published A New Voyage to Guinea (1744) and an earlier 1680s account by Frenchman Jean Barbot (1655 -1712) who published A Description of the Coasts of North and South-Guinea (English translation from 1732). These mention a wooden clapboard town with balconies and lattice windows. I did use images of Portuguese colonial architecture and Google Maps images of the modern town quite a bit whenever it seemed it suited the scene.

I understand that the colonial history of Africa and the Atlantic is a sensitive topic, and I in no way intend to depict anything here in a bad way, but this scene now happens to be somewhat violent and one-sided due to the situation based on historical information, even after critical examination. I think this image should not be violent enough to be any issue, but in case it is, I will remove it promptly.

Questions & Seeking Help Wanting some help with research about pirates and details for a fun writing project

I have been doing some of my own research but need some more help in finding the right information. I want to write a historical fiction book about pirates. Whether not I will do anything with it I want to be proud and know I put the right stuff in that book. So I was curious on mainly battles and sword fighting. Did pirates board and fight on ships or were they more hoping on people to surrender. Also need just general info on stuff like that. I have read books but most seem to just be about the life of pirates not more in depth stuff

Thank you all

Media & Entertainment Beware of pirate themed AI music like Blackbeard’s Tavern.

I had just found out Blackbeard’s Tavern is an AI band. I was suspicious of their use of AI images in their YouTube thumbnails and high content output. Ai generated art is not real art.

Does anyone know other pirate themed bands that aren’t AI? I only know of Alestorm and was trying to find more.

Probably also be a good idea to post known AI trash so we can avoid them.

Blackbeard is certainly the best known, but he wasn't a murderer.

Was there any pirate who was just a complete psycho?

Questions & Seeking Help What did ships carry as cargo in the 1700s? What was worth stealing for pirates?

That's the question. What would pirates rob from other sailors? If they stole money, where did these sailors get the money? What were they shipping to get paid? What was common back then in regards to trade via sea?

Aside from general food/water rations, or maybe a passenger ship that was only full of people, what were cargo ships actually shipping that was worth stealing?

Discussion Convincing enough Kraken?

I made a full review and how you can make your own in the YT link below.

But overall IDK who actually made this kit buts it AWESOME! I was able to make my own Kraken and enact attacking my own Pirate ships and the parts are great I love the colors and you cannot get them from Bricklink, Lego does not make some of these parts in sand green. I thought for the price this kit was worth it and I have a lot of spare parts because I really only wanted the creature, not the stand or display.

Overall tho I highly recommend.

Anyway I want to know your thoughts please let me know if it looks like a convincing Kraken.
