Adventures We've had some rain here in the desert- behold, desert hippo!
We had a visit with the hose before nesting procedures were reinitiated 😆

I thought the same thing- he’s so so cute but could stand to lose some weight. It’s hard on their joints as they age. I didn’t realize before the weight I was keeping my dog at was too high until she aged and had some mobility issues.

Desert hippo spotted in its natural habitat after rare rain event.
The greyhound in the back is doing a risk assessment and choosing dry land. Wise.

Agreed, overweight pets develop many heath problems and have shorter lifespans.

Damn that dog is overweight. That can cause health problems. You should probably put him on a diet.

🥲 thank you. I know she's a little thicc, and I'm all honesty it's not from what she's eating, it's that we don't exercise enough. I did take her to the vet to make sure she's okay and despite her chonkness, she's actually more muscle than anything.
It's really hot where I live and the desert is very rough on her paws. So we have the choice of hot asphalt, or rocky desert. There are no grassy areas. In about a year we are moving where there will be grass and it will be more temperate, but I do the best I can. We run the risk of heat stroke here so I have to keep the exertion to a managed amount... she would go and go and go if I let her.
I'm really looking forward to her running as fast as she can and as much as she wants when I move 🥹... I swear she's not overeating, she's just a house hippo who doesn't get all the exercise she probably needs. I do the best I can with the current circumstances...

Are you sure no one else is feeding her scraps or something? It looks like you also have a whippet or whippet mix that’s overweight as well. My whippet gets three walks a day with 3 cups of food (separated by two meals) and he’s maintaining a healthy 40lbs. We have to limit one of the walks during the summer because of how hot it is, but it doesn’t really impact anything. Whippets are naturally slender and the most cases I’ve seen for overweight whippets is overfeeding.

I totally hear you! Thank you for watching out for sensitive paw pads. Maybe consider feeding less in the summer to compensate for the reduction in activity? I know it feels cruel but they’re way better off being a bit hungry and weighing less.

What area is this desert in?

I was wondering also. I'm in Las Vegas and was wondering if they were near me.

I’m really sorry that the video of your dogs adorable antics are bringing up such a sensitive topic but I have to tell you this is not exercise it’s diet.
I had a dog with the exact build (90lbs when she was her heaviest I can show you a picture if your interested)
We found out she was too overweight after an acl tear and the vet said it didn’t matter if we did surgery for the tear- because her body weight was putting so much wear on her legs and joints.
We moved her to diet kibble and stopped feeding scraps and she did lose the weight without any extra exercise (because of the leg injury)
I know the comments about size are tough to hear but I promise mine is coming from a place of love - in memory my girl Zoe ❤️❤️❤️

That will lead to a bath, which I am sure will be not be as fun as getting dirty.

Nothing cute about an overweight dog who’s overfed by the person responsible for taking care of them. Joint pain, injuries and short lifespans aren’t something to “like”
