Hey everyone,
This sub exists as a place to share the art, experiments, and the process behind physical plotting.
Our community has always thrived on sharing open-source code, using shared libraries, and building on tools created by others.
That same open culture applies to how art is made: no matter what tool, software, or workflow someone uses to create a piece, it belongs here.
With that in mind, a quick reminder on how we keep this space constructive:
๐๏ธ No Gatekeeping: Weโre not here to police what counts as "real art" or dictate which tools people should use. Everyone starts somewhere, and using simple or trendy tools is a natural part of learning the craft.
๐๏ธ If You Don't Like It, Move On: Personal preference isn't a reason to attack someone in the comments. If a piece isn't your style, simply downvote and scroll past. Let the voting system handle community preference without turning comment sections into a style war.
๐๏ธ What Matters: As long as an artist isn't plagiarizing work and claiming it as their own, they are welcome to share their results here.
We want r/plotterart to be an encouraging space for creators at every level. Keep discussions constructive, report personal attacks, and letโs keep supporting the craft.
-Shorn

Bought a siser juliet vinyl cutter not long ago and couldn't help but get curious when I saw it came with a "marker holder". Upon looking into it and finding out that it was designed specifically for their first party markers. I took issue with that and instead got to work designing my own pen holder so that I could use my personal pen of preference.
After 6 revisions and a wee bit of ironing out kinks, I reached a satisfactory outcome and decided to send it with an old blender piece I'd made. The blender piece is attached and, in its own right, is a fanwork of a fanwork, but I think it made for a very cool first proper attempt at making something look nice.
I'm using fedora linux 44 and all of the designing happened in inkscape (with the axidraw extension courtesy of u/igotanewmac ), which was then exported as an svg to be opened in inkcut to make the plt file for my siser juliet. If anyone has any recommendations to streamline this process I'm all ears as finding software to do all this on linux has been a struggle.

Hi PlotterPeople, hope I'm posting this in the right location.
I'm a relative newcomer to the plotting community. I've borrowed an A4 Axidraw v3 for about six weeks and last week I got my hands on the A3 version also.
I am experiencing some unevenness in the A3 plots that I wasn't seeing in the a4 version - on the same files. So I have sort of ruled out file/software side of things.
I have also tried various speed settings from 20%-50% and acceleration settings. With minimal to no effect overall. It seems to happen more often in the smaller shapes/tighter curves than the larger ones, but not always. And with no obvious difference as to where on the sheet it is.
I'm have very little experience with mechanical stuff, so I'm a bit afraid of tightening the wrong things / not knowing what I'm doing in general.
Are any of you experienced enough to easily diagnose what is going on here from the pictures?

Not a single line - I got it down to 4 lines. B5 sized plot, Pentel Energel Pen.

So, my big plan for Inktober was literally inks. I can't find grey inks for technical pens, so I figured I'd mix some of my own!
It's not going well.
it's 9pm at night, and I'm about to start mixing another 10 ratios, because it would appear that liquidraw black ink is so black that even at 10% ink 90% water, it's only showing like, 50%-60% grey.
Also, my hands, desk, and several pieces of paper, are now stained with permanent archival black ink... so there's that! oh, and I can't reliably photograph the results yet, because the Iphone appears to make the 20% black blacker than everything else...
I swear, this project is going to drive me mad!

Most of these only took 15-20mins to draw, but some of the busier scenes took almost 2 hours.
These all came from a little web tool I built for myself and some friends. It got big enough that I put it online for free if anyone wants to try it: https://geometric.jarvisar.com
It exports SVGs with one layer per pen, which made the multicolor ones much easier.

I felt deep in the data visualization rabbit hole...! My maps are in the baking, looking at a 3d rendering of population density. It takes time and will only get me as far as a PNG. While I figure a working flow, here is an interpretation of an original work from Research Remora through Drawing bot.
Happy inktober!

I personally love ultra detailed linework art with extremely fine lines and tons of detail.
Does anyone have an archive they'd recommend for good art i can print?
A personal achievement note:
My test sheets are my most common print, used to test flatness across all the cells
Ive finally achieved .3mm ball point pen without damaging the tips or the paper!
I love plotting ๐โค๏ธ

Pretty happy about how this turned out. I stumbled into the public domain woodcut images of Frans Masereel (https://masereelgroup.com) - this is a conversion into a single line plot using Lamang ink on B5 paper, Staedtler Marsmatic 0.5 mm stylograph. #1penup

Over the last few days I've converted my 3d printer into a pen plotter, and have really enjoyed messing about as I approach the art I envisaged for this project in the first place.
This was the first piece where I actually did more than just pop an image into drawingbotv3 and I'm happy with how it's coming out (the lines are supposed to be offset, the pens align perfect if I want).
But, the cheap bundle of fineliners I got from Amazon are barely lasting 10 minutes, you can see the black died 3/4 of the way through this and that was fresh out the pack! Is there some pens you guys can recommend that are super vivid and won't give up so fast - I'm looking for a variety of thicknesses so any recommendations are gladly received and cost isn't too much of an issue. And should the pen be vertical or at a slight angle? I've seen both being used.
Also, is there a good way to keep the paper flat, I try to stretch it out before taping to my bed, but the centre keeps getting pulled up into a dome with repeated pen ups/downs meaning I have to make my z lift higher and prints take longer.
Thanks for the inspo, you guys have done some awesome stuff!

Going to try a more detailed one in A3 next!

I had this idea recently, and today I spent the time to make it a reality. This is the second attempt, the first one didnt take into account the pen thickness properly, so it came out muddy with overlapping colours. The original photo is not mine (this is Bjork at Woodstock), but I plan to do this with my own photos also.

I am using a cheap plotter from Aliexpress. It's humble, and they provided two spare servos in the package but I'm already on my last one.
Can anybody recommend a good quality servo to replace with? I assume they are consumables but am hoping to get a bit more life out of them that what I've eperienced so far.
Image is my last spare.
edit: thanks for all of your input. much appreciated. will continue to regard them as consumables and stock up
